  • Marie + Santana Martinez Blackware Bowl, Avanyu Motif
    Feb. 28, 2025

Marie + Santana Martinez Blackware Bowl, Avanyu Motif

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Maria Martinez (Native American, San Ildefonso Pueblo, 1887-1980) & Santana Martinez (Native American, San Ildefonso Pueblo, 1909-2002), ca. mid-20th century CE. A superb blackware pottery bowl, fired to a deep black hue, with a highly burnished surface contrasting against matte decoration depicting Awanyu, the sacred plumed serpent of Tewa mythology, revered as the guardian of water. The base is signed "Marie + Santana," a signature used between 1943 and 1956. Included is a color photograph of five women, presumably potters and/or family members. Size: 8.5" Diameter x 3.5" H (21.6 cm x 8.9 cm) Maria Martinez (1887-1980), born Maria Antonia Montoya in San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico, was a Tewa Native American potter renowned for her black-on-black pottery. Learning the craft from a young age, she and her husband, Julian Martinez, pioneered a distinctive style featuring matte designs on polished black surfaces, revitalizing Pueblo pottery into celebrated art forms. Santana Martinez (1909-2002), born Santana Roybal, was Maria and Julian's daughter-in-law, married to their eldest son, Adam. After Julian's death in 1943, Santana and Adam collaborated with Maria, with Santana painting designs and assisting in firing the pottery. This partnership continued the legacy of black-on-black pottery, ensuring its prominence in Native American art. Their works are featured in numerous museum collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Gilcrease Museum. A documentary of Maria was filmed in 1972, "Classic Maria Martinez: Native American Pottery Maker of San Ildefonso," offering a fascinating glimpse into her process.
