    Charles Pettitt (British; 1831-1885) 1863 Original Oil on Canvas Landscape Painting in Museum Quality Filigree Frame - This superb and fine quality 19th century oil on canvas was painted by Charles Pettitt, a well-known British landscape painter of the period. The piece depicts a landscape scene of a vast lake, with travelers arriving by boat and being greeted by people on the shore. The piece shows stunning attention to detail, and is in wonderful condition. The piece is signed and dated 1863 (below the dock at the edge of the piece) and is framed in a goregous, wood and gilt gold filigree frame that is truly a work of art in itself. The piece (including the frame) measures approx. 53" x 40". Charles Pettitt was born into the Birmingham family of artists, in 1831. He was a landscape painter who painted in oils and travelled extensively throughout the British Isles to paint his landscapes. He loved the mountains of  the Lake District, Wales and Scotland and his paintings are as popular today as they were during his lifetime. He exhibited at the Suffolk Street Galleries, London, the British Institution, and other provincial galleries. His work is held in York Art Gallery.
