    Andre-Charles Coppier (France, Born, 1867) ORIGINAL ETCHING after Sir John Pettie (England, 1839-1893), titled: Bonnie Prince Charlie, c. 1893-95, image approx. 11-3/4 x 8-1/4" plus wide clean margins. Done for 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. From 1893 to 1895 the Philadelphia printer and publisher, George Barrie, was at work upon a large and lavish series of original etchings and chromolithographs detailing exhibits of the fine art from participating countries at the World's Columbian Exposition. The original prints, such as this fine example, were printed on either China or Japon papers and were limited to an edition of only two hundred impressions. Barrie hired some of the finest etchers of the time to work on the series. Today these original etchings and lithographs are collected not only for their important 1890's style but for their superb technical accomplishments. Impressions from these limited editions are as finely printed as one can find. VG.

    Attributed to John Pettie (1839-1893), Oil on canvas, The famous Paris Duel or The Duel after the Masquerade , Labelled to slip lower middle, 20 x 30''. The scene is set on a grey winter morning in the Bois de Boulogne, trees bare and snow covering the ground. A man dressed as a Perriot has been mortally wounded in a duel and has collapsed into the arms of a Duc de Guise . A surgeon, dressed as a Doge of Venice , tries to stop the flow of blood, while a Donio clutches his own head. The survivor of the duel, dressed as an American Indian, walks away with his second, a Harlequin towards his carriage, shown waiting in the background. This actually is supposed to have happened ! Bears remains of Sotheby's numbers verso.
