    ROLAND HINTON PERRY (AMERICAN, 1870-1941), BRONZE FIGURE OF A SATYRESS WITH PIPES signed 'R. Hinton Perry (copyright) 1914', and GORHAM CO. FOUNDERS 'QATJ' and block GFC (?) Note: Roland Hinton Perry was an American sculptor and painter born in New York City. At the age of 19, he was accepted to the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, and he also studied at both Academie Julian and Delecluse. After returning to the United States, he received a commission for a series of bas-reliefs for the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and the following year for the Court of Neptune Fountain in front of the Library (now the Thomas Jefferson Building). Other commissions include the statue of 'Commonwealth' on top of the dome of Pennsylvania's Capitol Building (1905).

    DESCRIPTION: After Roland H. Perry (American, 1870-1941). Gilt bronze, pewter and resin sculpture entitled "Commonwealth" on wooden base. Plaque to front "'Commonwealth' Pennsylvania State Capitol 1905-1998 Limited Edition". Perry, sculptor and painter, was born in New York City. Educated in private schools, Perry entered Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1890 at the age of 19. At the age of 21, however, Perry turned his attention to the studios of the Academie Deleceuse in Paris and found sculpture to be his true talent. In 1905 Perry, now a renowned sculptor, executed the working model of the statue on the Pennsylvania Capitol dome. Capitol architect, Joseph Huston, designed and drew the specifications for the gilded bronze statue, which he called Commonwealth.     DESCRIPTION: After Roland Hinton Perry (American, 1870-1941). Commonwealth. Circa 1998. Gilded bronze statue on a square wood base. Marked "Designed by Joseph M. Huston, Architect R.H. Perry Sculptor," on the side and with a plaque marked "'Commonwealth' Pennsylvania State Capitol 1905-1998 Limited Edition." Replica of the original sculpture atop the dome of the Pennsylvania Capitol, originally placed there May 25, 1905. The original statue was removed in December 1997 and placed back atop the dome in September 1998. With a photograph of the original sculpture when it was taken off the top of the Capitol along with a sheet of information describing the sculpture. MEASUREMENTS: 18-7/8" x 6" x 6". CONDITION: No defects noted.
