    Sarah Bushnell Perkins (Connecticut, 1771-1831), aka The Beardsley Limner, oil on canvas half-length portrait of a long-haired boy petting a black and white dog that jumps playfully into view from beneath the painting's lower edge. Within a gold, oval tromp l'oeil border with ambiguous background. Circa 1800. Housed in a modern distressed gilt and ebonized wood frame in period style. Canvas: 30" H x 24 7/8" W. Frame: 35 3/16" H x 30 1/4" W. Biographical note: Formerly known as the "Beardsley Limner," Sarah Perkins of Plainfield, CT was identified by scholars in 1984 as the person responsible for fourteen portraits, primarily of her own family. Her portraits are distinguished by strong modeling and contrast with a flat appearance. She was also skillful in handling fabrics and texture, and increasingly moved toward a looser, painterly style with some abstraction in her cloth. Her level of formal art instruction is unknown; Perkins' father was a physician and the proprietor of the Plainfield Academy in Connecticut, and she may have had lessons there. The pastel portraits that she did when she was young suggest that she had lessons from Joseph Seward who lived near her family in Hampton, and she was socially connected to Yale University where she may have had some additional training. Her mother died of tuberculosis when Perkins was twenty-four, and her father died four years later, leaving Perkins to care for the seven younger children. In 1801, she married General Lemuel Grosvenor, a widower with five children of his own. With the addition of several more children of her own, Perkins' total responsibility was sixteen children.     Unsigned pastel portrait of a young infant in blue & white dress holding a basket of flowers in one hand and a biscuit in the other. She is seated on a carpet decorated with red, pink, white, yellow, & green stylized flowers. Susan Alden was the daughter of Dr. Ebenezer Alden (1755-1806) and Sarah Bass Alden (1759-1833) and was a descendant of John Alden & Priscilla Mullins Alden who were immortalized by Longfellow in "The Courtship of Miles Standish". Housed in what may be its original black & gilt frame, behind glass. SIZE: Sight: 21-1/2" x 17-1/2". Overall: 24" x 20". CONDITION: Generally very good with a couple of insect holes to feet. 50919-4

    PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN ATTRIBUTED TO SARAH BUSHNELL PERKINS (CONNECTICUT, 1771-1831). Oil on canvas, unsigned. Older woman with lace bonnet. 30"h. 27"w., in a frame, 37"h. 34"w. Ex Stephen Score (Massachusetts). A penciled note on the stretcher identifies her as "Mrs. Perkins, wife of Jonathan Perkins, an original member N.H. Soc. of Cincinnat-, A gift of Mrs. I---, a descendant". Sarah Perkins, formerly knowns as the "Beardsley Limner," was the niece of Jonathan Perkins (b. 1749). See Heslip and Kellogg, "The Beardsley Limner Identified as Sarah Perkins" in The Magazine Antiques, September 1984. The article notes that Perkins painted family members and close associates often over extended time periods. Noted also are stylistic characteristics: expressionless face; direct frontal gaze; symmetrical almond shaped eyes; cramped shoulders; cramped shoulders; ambiguously attached arms; thin lips; and 'backgrounds are shaded from light to dark, usually from right to left'.

This portrait is thought to be of Sarah Bushnell Perkins mother, Mrs. Joseph (Mary Bushnell) Perkins, 1707-1795.
