LÁSZLÓ PÉRI (1898-1967), KAREL MAES (1900-1974), & JOZEF PEETERS (1895-1960) [COMPOSITIONS / SPACE CONSTRUCTION / DER OVERZICHT]. Group of 7 linocuts. 1920s. Sizes vary, each approximately 12x11 inches, 30½x28 cm. Condition varies, generally A-: some with minor creases and darkening; some hand-signed, others stamped with E.M. (Emanuel Maeyens). Paper, one printed on tissue, one on orange paper. Group includes linocut proofs, some for Het Overzicht - "The Overview," a Flemish publication, characterized by its first and second series. Jozef Peeters was a Belgian artist with ties to Futurism, who designed the covers for the 2nd half of the publications run, and was the co-editor. Series II also delves into avant-garde movements such as De Stijl (by Karel Maes), Constructivism, and Bauhaus (Moholy-Nagy). Items stamped E.M. are from Emanuel Maeyens' collection, not designed by him. Emanuel Maeyens ran an art supply shop, which was often advertised in issues of Het Overzicht. Maeyens' collection included prints by international members of the avant-garde, including the three represented here. Linocuts by Hungarian Constructivist artist Péri are from his "Space Construction" series, which was exhibited at Der Sturm gallery alongside Moholy-Nagy. Images available upon request.

ARTIST: JOZEF PEETERS (1895-1960) SIZE: Each: 8 7/8 x 12 in./22.6 x 30.5 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: Jozef Peeters is considered to be one of the first Belgian abstract painters. A member of the Futurist movement, Peeters was engaged in symbolism, theosophy, Constructivism, and typographic experimentation. In 1918, he helped found the Kring Moderne Kunst (Modern Art Circle) in Antwerp; in 1921, he organized the First Congress for Modern Art; and in 1922, he became the editor of the literary magazine Het Overzicht. Here, Peeters presents his Avant Garde conceptions in two linocut prints which were preliminary designs for the announcement of “Moderne Dichten” (Modern Poems), recited by Germaine Michielsen at Beethoven Hall on February 25, 1921. The letters have been reduced to elemental shapes, forming an abstract composition that overpowers the need for legibility: the design, instead, is what captures our attention. Another version of this design appears in Merrill Berman’s collection, and he wrote, “If Antwerp’s artistic accomplishments of the early 1920s have attracted less attention than the subsequent achievements of Belgian Surrealist painters such as Paul Delvaux and René Magritte... this may in part reflect the complexities of Belgian history. Many of the figures featured here promoted Flemish language and culture, but when nationalism became a polarizing force in the late 1920s, only some found common cause with Germany and followed the trajectory toward collaboration.” Of these two prints, one is on gold leaf stock and one is black and white; on verso, both are stamped “luxe-uitgave,” or “luxury edition.” (2) (Futurist; Literary)

Portefeuille cartonné de l’édition. « Le plus éminent de ces graveurs [en Flandre] fut Jozef Peeters (1895-1960) qui dirigea avec Michel Seuphor, de 1922 à 1925, la revue « Het Overzicht », à Anvers, l’une des premières du monde qui défendirent l’art abstrait. La suite de dix-sept linogravures que voici est une sélection de son œuvre gravé de cette époque. On y décèlera d’abord une certaine influence de Kandinsky, ensuite une influence certaine de la plastique pure hollandaise dont Peeters, qui connut Mondrian en 1921, cherchait un assouplissement. » (M. Aankondigingen voor poezie-avonden voorgedragen door Germaine Michielsens in de Beethovenzaal (De Bomstraat te Antwerpen), op 25 Februari 1921 (ingeleid door Marnix Gijsen) en op 9 Maart 1923 (ingeleid door Jozef Muls). Beide programmabladen verschijnen als illustratie bij Peeters' artikel Konstruktieve graphiek in Het Overzicht, 18-19, 1923 (pp. 111-114). Ref: Retrospectieve Jozef Peeters. Oostende, 1995, nr 37). Peeters zou eveneens c. 1923 het volledige wooninterieur van de voordrachtkunstenares ontwerpen (cf. Melders, Jozef Peeters, 1978, p. 101).
