Painted in 1828; the portrait depicts the Pratt family of Essex, Connecticut: father, Julius Pratt (1791-1869), his wife, Lydia DeWolf Pratt (1796-1862), their daughter, Harriet Melinda Pratt (1818-1850), their son, Julius Howard Pratt (1821-1909) and their son William A. Pratt (b. 1845). William was painted secondarily likely by the Connecticut artist George C. Baldwin (abt. 1818-1879). Julius Pratt and Lydia DeWolf Pratt married on January 8, 1817. The lot is accompanied by a history of the Pratt family by Julius Howard Pratt, entitled Reminiscences: Personal and Otherwise, printed privately in 1910. Where the portrait is used as a frontispiece. The subjects are identified as: the father, Julius Pratt (1791-1869), his wife, Lydia DeWolf Pratt (1796-1862), their daughter, Harriet Melinda Pratt (1818-1850), their son, Julius Howard Pratt (1821-1909) and William A. Pratt (b. 1845). William was later added, likely by the obscure Connecticut artist George C. Baldwin (abt. 1818-1879). (2 pieces).

Robert Deacon Peckham (American, 1785-1877) Portrait of Phineas Reed. Unsigned, the subject's name inscribed on a note attached to the reverse. Oil on panel, 28 3/8 x 22 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Minor paint loss, a few superfluous specks of paint. Note: This portrait may depict Phineas W. Reed, a storekeeper residing in the town of Westminster, Massachusetts, where Robert Deacon Peckham lived and painted for many years. Town history states that Phineas was born in 1807, and upon reaching a mature age, he became a partner at the Whitman & Reed store. After some time he withdrew from the partnership, and took up farming in the later years of his life. He married the widow Sally Samuelson and settled in the Captain Whitney house at the corner of Main and Bacon Streets. He died in 1861 at the age of 54.

Deacon Robert Peckham (Massachusetts, 1785-1877) Portrait of a Mother and Child, c. 1835. Unsigned. Oil on wood panel, 30 x 24 1/2 in., in a molded giltwood frame. Condition: Minor retouch, otherwise very good. Note: Born in Petersham, Massachusetts, the deacon was an artist and abolitionist active in Bolton and later Westminster, where his home, a stop on the underground railroad, still stands. Before 1828, when he was appointed Deacon of the Westminster First Congregation, he seems to have been active as a house and ornamental painter. After 1828, he concentrated on portraiture, which, in his use of outlining and decorative patterning, shows the strong influence of his early training in trade. His work is also characterized by precise attention to details of dress, artifacts, and setting.

Westboro, Mass.: The Chronotype Printing Company, 1908, rep. p. 21 Helen B. Ihnen, "Search and Research," The Antiques Journal, March 1951, pp. 18, 20, rep. p. 18. Born in 1763, Betsey Baker Thurston married as her third husband Deacon Isaac Davis of Northboro, Massachusetts. Three years later, in 1819, Deacon Davis commissioned Robert Peckham, a resident of nearby Westminster, to paint their likenesses. According to family tradition, Peckham painted several members of the Davis family. Wearing a demure bonnet, a beaded necklace and a long-sleeved Empire dress decorated with a fashionably high frilled neck, Mrs. David is attired in the present work in a style appropriate to the period. By the mid-twentieth century, the portrait had passed out of family hands. Helen B. Ihnen, who purchased the portrait of Mrs. Davis at an antique shop in New York City, wrote of her acquisition and her efforts to research the painting in an article in The Antiques Journal in March 1951. A scrapbook of Mrs. Ihnen's research and correspondence concerning the portrait and Davis family genealogy accompanies the lot. In her article, Mrs. Ihnen describes an old bill in the Davis family records, reading: Dea. Isaac Dayas To Robert Peckham, Dr. 1815, April 15 To painting to portraits $24.00 Received payment Robert Peckham A Massachusetts portrait painter, Robert Peckham was active in the country districts of New England, but also spent time in Boston and Northampton after his marriage. By 1821 he had settled in Westminster, where he established a reputation for portrait painting. His portrait of John Greenleaf Whittier is owned by the Worcester Historical Association; other examples of his work are included in the collections of the Fruitlands Museum, Harvard, Massachusetts; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Deacon Robert was also an abolitionist and his home was a stop on the Underground Railroad.

1785-1877) Portrait of Webster Tucker. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1844, the full-length image of Webster Tucker (1834-1872) standing on a Venetian striped carpet in front of a wall with wainscoting, a grained footboard and a sliver of a grain-painted, paneled door with brass pull and a mantel and hearth on the other side; Webster wears a black frock coat and vest with white lace collar, beige trousers, black shoes and holds a black hat with tassel in one hand and his school books in other, sight 45 3/4 x 32 3/4 in., in an original black-painted pine and ash frame. Condition: Very good; overall craquelure with a few minor fissures lacking paint; small repair near his shoe; unlined; lightly cleaned. Frame is repainted. Provenance: A family descendant of Webster Tucker (May 1834-May 1872) donated this portrait to the Massachusetts educational institution that recently deaccessioned it from its collections and consigned it to Skinner. Note: Webster Tucker was born in Winchendon, Massachusetts, part of Worcester County in 1834, and married Bethridge Parker there in January 1857. Webster's parents were Seth Tucker of Winchendon and Valonia Harvey of Chesterfield, Cheshire, New Hampshire. Note: Robert Peckham, a life-long resident of Westminster, Massachusetts, studied briefly with Ethan Allan Greenwood. He began as a rural decorative painter but became an accomplished portrait artist. By the 1830s his modeling, as well as his use of light and shadow, can be seen. This painting also shows his meticulous handling of architectural details.
