GIOVANNI PATRONE (1904-1963) 5 DIAS / REX Y CONTI DI SAVOIA / "ITALIAN LINE." 1932. 38x24 1/4 inches, 96 1/2x61 1/2 cm. Barabino & Graeve, Genova. Condition B+: repaired tears, small replaced losses and restoration in margins; creases and restoration in image and along horizontal folds. Framed. The Rex and the Conte de Savoia, the largest liners in the Italian Line fleet, were sister ships running the transatlantic route. Two years after her launch in 1932, the Rex captured the Blue Ribband, achieving the fastest Atlantic crossing to date. "Patrone was an active painter and poster designer in Genoa. In the years between the wars, he began to work primarily for shipping companies including Tirrenia, Italian Line, Lloyd Triestino and others" (Bolaffi p. 170). This streamlined image captures a handsome Art Deco profile of these two crown jewels of the Italian merchant marine and highlights the vessel's nautical route. This is the Spanish version. GIOVANNI PATRONE (1904-1963) SÜD AFRIKA EXPRESSDIENST. 1934. 37 1/4x24 3/4 inches, 94 1/2x63 cm. Barabino & Graeve, Genova. Condition A: minor replaced loss in margin. Patrone's posters for various Italian shipping lines (Cosulich, Italian Lines / Flotte Riunite, Lloyd Triestino and other international lines such as the American Export Lines) all bespeak a mannerist Art Deco style, particularly in his images of ships, which appear archetypically fluid and graceful. This image focuses less on the vessel and more on the spirit of adventure that comes with boat travel to Africa. Patrone, rather incongruously, depicts a man in a pith helmet, on the deck of a ship, shading his eyes from the glaring sun of the Southern hemisphere. The Navigazione Generale Italiana began service from Genoa to Capetown and Durban on the Duilio and Giulio Cesare in the 1930s. This is the German version.

Sadly, it only saw three years at sea, as on July 25, 1956, it collided with the MS Stockholm off the coast of Nantucket, resulting in one of the most famous modern maritime disasters. This is the only known poster for its inaugural voyage.
