Andre Pater American (b. Poland), (b. 1953) When Bargaining Gets Tight, 1986 offset lithograph Pencil signed. Edition 205/350. Biography from the Archives of askART: The following information was submitted by Jeanne Chisholm: A resident of Lexington, Kentucky, this Polish-born artist received his Masters Degree (Summa cum Laude) from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. Arabian horses were his first subjects. In the late 80's, he developed a love of the Thoroughbred with racing scenes as well as portrayals of hunting dogs, cattle and wildlife. The subject of numerous articles and the winner of many awards, Pater and his wife have become U.S. citizens. Powerful renditions of cows in a landscape, on scent hounds and character jockeys have been landmarks of his style and prizes for sporting art lovers and collectors around the world. His oils, pastels, gouaches and charcoals can be found in many private and corporate collections including Keeneland Racecourse showcasing the recently commissioned jockeys' series of pastels, at its newly remodeled clubhouse. From the time he first landed in the United States in 1981, the Polish-born artist has come a long way. Strong Polish traditions in the breeding of the Arabian horse made Pater initially interested in that as a subject matter. It wasn't until he moved to Kentucky in 1988 that his interest shifted from Arabian horses to powerful Thoroughbreds. Paintings depicting racing, foxhunting, sporting dogs, cattle and wildlife followed. Soon after Pater settled in Lexington, he discovered that "The Sporting Life" is lived here as it is nowhere else, and the world of the Thoroughbred has changed his artistic imagination ever since. Since his 1994 debut as a keynote speaker at the prestigious "Artists of America" show held in Denver by the Rotary Club, he has been a participating artist at their annual exhibition and sale. During the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, Andre, by invitation of the Polish Consulate in Chicago, presented a "Retrospective Exhibit" at the Polish Cultural Center in Atlanta, site of the Olympic Games. The artistic community has recognized Pater with numerous publications. Spur, Polo, and Canadian Thoroughbred have showcased his works. He has been featured twice in the Equine Images magazine. The Carlyle Hotel magazine of New York and the British Cheltenham Racecourse publication have featured Pater in their recent issues.

Andre Pater - When Bargaining Gets Tight

    Est: $90,000 - $120,000

Andre Pater When Bargaining Gets Tight Oil on Canvas 24 x 30 in Signed. Illustrated: Cover of Authentic Arabian Horse Names. “When Bargaining Gets Tight,” the painting by Andre Pater dated 1986, is a true description of events that precede the sale of a horse in certain parts of the Middle East. The spirit of a true “bargain” is depicted when a horse is brought to the outskirts of the town where the buyer and seller will meet. Each brings his own agent. In this painting, the Bedouin in the white hood is the seller’s agent; the Bedouin near the back of the horse is the buyer’s agent. The seller’s agent is trying to describe to the buyer the good qualities that the horse is blessed with while the buyer’s agent is trying to find faults with the horse to lower the bargaining price. When the two agents agree on a final price, “The deal is done.” Congratulations will follow, exchange of horse and money will take place, and a great feast will be prepared in the town to celebrate the success of the “bargain.” – Bachir Youseph Bserani, 2008

Fincastle Publishing, Lexington, Kentucky. 2019. "Depicted here is a Lakota warrior, approx. 1870, in full regalia; wearing a buckskin war-shirt decorated in locks of horsehair and scalps along his arm, and draped in a buffalo robe. Each aspect of this warrior's dress signifies honor and accomplishment. In his right hand he holds a fan made from the right wing of an eagle, itself adorned with yellow and orange beads made from porcupine quills. On his chest hangs a peace medal alongside his war-whistle; one, a guarantee of peace given to prominent Native American war chiefs; the other, a tool to communicate during battle. It was fashionable to dress in an asymmetrical way; i.e., the seashell earring on only one ear, the marking on only one side of his face, the hair-braids on either side, one wrapped in skunk fur, the other in crimson wool, and lastly, the red arrow adorning his head, which signified his status in the war council. All of these elements are an expression of the noble nature of his culture, and his individual pride." - Andre Pater Andre Pater (Polish/American, b. 1953) Now a resident of Lexington, Kentucky, the Polish-born artist received his master's degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. Andre Pater Polish/American, b. 1953 Caravan to Appleby Fair Oil on canvas Signed The Appleby Horse Fair is an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers in the town of Appleby in Westmoreland, England. Traditionally held in early June, the largest such fair in Europe draws British, Irish, and Scottish Romanichal travelers in traditional caravans and campers to the market town . Originating from a charter issued by James II in 1685, the fair traces its roots to two separate events: the medieval borough fair held at Whitsuntide until 1885 and the New Fair, an unrecognized event held on Gallows Hill beginning in 1775. A means for sheep and cattle drovers as well as horse traders to sell their stock, the fair by the 1900s had evolved into a major event. The fair is not organized by an individual group or specific entity, but a “shera” or head Romani is appointed to oversee the technical aspects and to serve as a liaison with local authority. Activities take place predominantly on Fair Hill and Market Field while horse trading occurs on what is known as the flashing lane. Horses are shown by trotting up and down at speed. A large majority of the horses are stationed in the town center beside the River Eden, where they are ridden directly into the river to be washed and often tied up across from the local pub. Apart from the horses one can find fortune-tellers, palm readers, and assorted vendors of merchandise traditional to the traveller groups.

Andre Pater (Polish/American, born 1953) THE CHERRY AND BLACK RACING SILKS OF PIERRE LORILLARD $35,000. – 40,000. Pastel, 36” x 24” Signed $35,000. – 40,000. Pierre Lorillard was one of the foremost Thoroughbred owners in the history of the American turf. His long, illustrious racing career was marked with tremendous success. But Lorillard is remembered for one feat above all others — owning Iroquois, the first American-bred horse to win the Epsom Derby. In 1881 Iroquois won the Epsom Derby with Fred Archer, the top English jockey of his day, in the saddle. Iroquois went on to win many other prestigious British races, including the St. Leger Stakes at Doncaster, the Payne Stakes,Prince of Wales’s Stakes, and the St. James’s Palace Stakes. After his return to America, Iroquois won several important American stakes races for Lorillard before being purchased by William H. Jackson of Belle Meade Stud in Nashville in 1886. Iroquois was retired to stud at Belle Meade, where he enjoyed tremendous success, including being named the top U.S. stallion of 1902. The image of Iroquois with Fred Archer up is iconic in American racing history, and Pater’s depiction of Mr. Lorillard’s famous cherry and black silks pays fitting homage to the greatness achieved under his historic colors.
