Born in 1947 in a small village near Ahmedabad, Amrut Patel completed his Diploma in painting from C.N.College of Fine Art- Ahmedabad in 1968 and consequently received his training in fresco and mural techniques from Banasthali- Rajasthan. He was employed with the Weavers' Service Centre, Ministry of Textiles by the Government of India.

Patel started his career in the late sixties and has been on the national art scene for nearly four decades. His affinity for experimenting with visual images has earned him an exclusive position in the contemporary art world. Artistic serenity of hues, tonal variations, and elegantly balanced forms juxtaposing on one another are the trademarks of a sizable body of his works. Patel's recent series of non-narrative works, predominantly done in acrylic on canvas or paper resonate alongside a gloomy silence that invites the viewer into the realm of the 'virtual space'. He became a lecturer in painting at The Fine Art College, Ahmedabad from 1969-71 & Fine Art College, Vallabh Vidyanagar- Gujarat from 1971-75.

Patel has been the recipient of numerous state awards throughout his career including the National Award as Designer from the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India for a project titled "INDIAN BIRDS" for India Festival in Sweden-1987, The Sahitya Kala Parishad award in 1980 and 1986, the National Award of the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi in 1976, Maha Koshal Kala Parishad Award- Raipur in 1971, and the AIFACS award in 1968. Along with this in 2004, he also curated the prestigious exhibition of National and Triennale Awardees-'Swarnarekha'- organized by Lalit Kala Akademi on the occasion of Golden Jubilee Celebrations.
