Elle est illustrée de 42 figures dont 32 planches hors texte, la plupart coloriées. On joint : – Une lettre autographe signée de Pasteur à Jérome Nicklès, professeur de chimie à Nancy, datée Paris, 14 octobre 1863 ; 4 pp. in-8 à en-tête de l'École Normale Supérieure : « Mon cher confrère, Mon savant confrère, M. Payen, me remet à l’instant une petite note dans laquelle il m’informe que je trouverais sans doute une confirmation de mes vues et expériences sur l’absorption de l’oxygène et des conséquences qui peuvent en résulter au sujet de la vinification dans un article de M. H. Barbezan [...] où il est question d’un vin pour la préparation duquel on brasse avec des pelles le raisin pendant 48 heures avant la fermentation en tonneau. Vous seriez bien aimable de prendre la peine de m’adresser un échantillon de ce vin, et je crois que vous rendriez service d’écrire à ce sujet une note pour l’Académie. Car vous ajouterez ainsi ma première notion qui manque à mon travail, celle de pratiques en grand et de ses heureux effets... » Superbe lettre inédite, une des plus belle consacrée au vin, provenant de la collection Louis Sergent (note autographe sur un feuillet séparé). Pasteur (p. 200 de son livre) relate cette « méthode très curieuse de faire le vin, usitée en Lorraine », citant l’article de Nicklès publié en 1863, qui est très proche des termes de cette lettre. – Une lettre autographe signée de Pasteur du 4 janvier 1882 (1 p. in-8), dans laquelle il répond à son correspondant sur un point précis de traitement du vin. – Un portrait photographique de L. Pasteur, one page, 8vo, Paris, 10th April 1882, to a gentleman, in French. Pasteur writes, in part, 'Je vous remercie de votre lettre et de votre dépêche de ce matin. Vous aurez la complaisance de me dire si les deux moutons morts a Forfry annoncés par votre dépêche, font partie des 3 mauvais qui ont reçu d'emblée le vaccin spécial ou des 45 qui ont reçu antérieurement le 1er vaccin' (Translation: 'I thank you for your letter and your telegram this morning. You will have the kindness to tell me if the two dead sheep at Forfry announced by your telegram, are part of the 3 ill ones who immediately received the special vaccine or of the 45 who have previously received the 1st vaccine') and in a postscript remarks 'Retenez bien que le 7 avril vous avez inoculé chez M. Narest ; le 8 avril, chez Mr Longuet ; le 9 avril chez ? - je ne sais pas encore. Ne confondez pas les résultats dans ces trois cas-là' (Translation: 'Remember that on 7th April you inoculated at Mr. Narest's; on 8th April at Mr. Longuet's; on 9th April at? - I do not know yet. Do not confuse the results in these three cases'). A few very light, minor creases and one small tear to the centre of the lower edge, otherwise VG Pasteur had been trying to develop the anthrax vaccine since 1877, shortly after Robert Koch's discovery of the bacterium, but it was not until 21st March 1881 that he announced the successful vaccination of sheep, and a public experiment was conducted a few months later in May. All of the vaccinated sheep survived, while unvaccinated ones died before the public viewers, and Pasteur's report to the French Academy of Sciences in June concluded '[by] looking at everything from the scientific point of view, the development of a vaccination against anthrax constitutes significant progress beyond the first vaccine developed by Jenner, since the latter had never been obtained experimentally'.

Pasteur responds to his correspondent regarding a photograph, stating in part `J´ai un portrait gravé d´après une photographie, mais sans ressemblance. Il n´est pas dans le commerce… Il y a ma grande et excellente photo, gravure du portrait par Edelfelt du salon de l´an dernier…´ («I have a portrait engraved coming from a photograph, but without resemblance. It is not for sale… There is my large and excellent photo, engraving of the portrait by Edelfelt from last year´s salon in Paris… ») VG Albert Edelfelt (1854-1905) Finnish-Swedish Painter. He made a portrait of Pasteur in 1885 which can be seen at the Musée d´Orsay in Paris.

Pasteur'), 1 p, on gray note card, 70 x 110 mm, Paris, August 9th, [c. 1885], advising in the case of a child bitten by a dog. Float mounted, matted and framed, with an English translation printed on the mat. Light toning. Not examined out of frame. ' Have the dog examined..., ' Pasteur writes, 'If the dog (which should not be killed), lives 5 to 7 more days without symptoms of rabies, that means it was not rabid ... If the dog dies of rabies, send the child without delay to 14 Rue Vauquelin at 11 a.m.' Pasteur, who pioneered the treatment and prevention of disease by recognizing the action of microbial organisms and their eradication, developed the first rabies vaccine along with Émile Roux, in 1885. 14 Rue Vauquelin was the location of the laboratory established around 1881 by Pasteur and Charles Chamberland for the production of vaccines of various types.

Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) was a French biologist, microbiologist, and chemist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation, and pasteurization. He is remembered for his remarkable breakthroughs in the causes and prevention of diseases. Pasteur reduced mortality from puerperal fever and created the first vaccines for rabies and anthrax. His medical discoveries provided direct support for the germ theory of disease and its application in clinical medicine. Pasteur is best known to the general public for his invention of the technique of treating milk and wine to stop bacterial contamination, a process now called pasteurization.
