Leonid Osipovic Pasternak Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, b. 1862 - d. 1945

Leonid Osipovich Pasternak (born3 April 1862 (N.S.) – 31 May 1945) was a Russian post-impressionist painter. He was the father of the poet and novelist Boris Pasternak.

Pasternak was born in Odessa to an Orthodox Jewish family on 4 April 1862. The family claimed to be distantly descended, in one line, from Isaac Abrabanel, the 15th-century Jewish philosopher and treasurer of Portugal, although no independent evidence of this exists.[1] Leonid's father made an income by renting out a guest house. The courtyard of the guest house, with its adjoining coach-house, first awakened Leonid's artistic imagination. He was the youngest of six children.

He started to draw very early, but his family tried to discourage him, as they feared that his drawing would interfere with his studies. His first sponsor was the local street cleaner who began buying Pasternak's art when Leonid was seven years old. During 1879–81 Leonid Pasternak was a graduate of the Grekov Odessa Art school.

From 1881 to 1885, Leonid studied at Moscow University, first in the Department of Medicine, then at the Department of Law. Eventually he decided to devote his life to art and entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from which he graduated in 1887. He returned to Russia, served the compulsory two years in the Imperial Russian Army (artillery regiment) and in 1889 started a career as a full-time painter.

The start of his career was very successful. His first exhibited painting was bought by Pavel Tretyakov, the most important art sponsor in Russia of the time. He soon became a popular painter, a member of the so-called Polenov circle, that included Valentin Serov, Isaac Levitan, Mikhail Nesterov, and Konstantin Korovin. In 1889 he married the pianist Rosa Isidorovna Kaufman, the daughter of Isidor Kaufman, a well-to-do Jewish industrialist. The newlyweds settled in Moscow and in (1890) the first of the couple's four children was born — the famous author and poet Boris Pasternak.

Leonid Pasternak was one of the first Russian painters who labeled himself an Impressionist. In Russia in the 1880s and 1890s such a proclamation was novel enough to draw attention to an artist. Leonid also was a member of the Peredvizhniki and Union of Russian Artists movements. He was a friend of Leo Tolstoy, for months lived in Yasnaya Polyana, and painted many portraits of the great writer, also illustrating his novels War and Peace and Resurrection.

  • PASTERNAK LEONID (1862 - 1945) - Letter from home
    Dec. 11, 2024

    PASTERNAK LEONID (1862 - 1945) - Letter from home

    Est: €50,000 - €70,000

PASTERNAK LEONID (1862 - 1945). Letter from home. Signed lower left. At the back A La Vieille Russie label. Thanks to Dr Rimgaila Salys for kindly confirming the attribution on a photographic basis. Provenance: already Madame de Sobinoff (label at the back); Private Collection. Comparative Literature: Rimgaila Salys, Leonid Pasternak: the Russian years, 1875-1921, Vol. I, Oxford Univ Pr, 1999, n. 21-22. The work proposed here is a study, datable to 1889, for the painting of the same name preserved at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. The painting evokes the time when Pasternak enlisted as a volunteer in the army between 1885 and 1886. During this period the artist devoted himself assiduously to drawing, trying to capture everything he saw and that struck him: in fact, the first sketches for 'Letter from Home,' later executed in 1889 once he moved to Moscow, date from these years. During his stay in the capital Pasternak came into contact with a number of important cultural circles, frequenting painters, aristocrats and singers, including the gallery A la Vieille Russie, whose label can be seen on the back of the canvas. He also became friends with the tenor Sobinov to whose wife this work belonged. The painting finished today at the Tretyakov Gallery is considered the artist's first major work; information provided by the Pasternak Trust, which we thank, suggests that the version now in Moscow was purchased by Tretyakov directly from Pasternak to enter his collection and participated in the annual exhibition of the “Peredvizhniki” group, which corresponded to the painter's first success. In contrast, the first version of a 'Letter from Home' was given (or sold?) by the artist himself to his cousin Karl Pasternak. The painting offered here can be considered a study slightly earlier than the one in the Russian museum in that several elements, such as the hair color and features of the main figure listening, are more similar to this than to the first version. . 74 x 54 cm.

    L. Pasternak, his Life and Work, by Haim Nachman Bialik and Max Osborn. Berlin: Stybel Publishing House, 1924. Leonid Osipovich Pasternak (1862-1945) – a fine monograph with 148 prints, including twenty four lithographs, and two essays about the artist and his work by Haim Nachman Bialik and Max Osborn. Copy no. 58 from an edition of one hundred copies, with a lithograph signed by Pasternak – portrait of the author Émile Verhaeren. On the first page appears a dedication written by hand: "to Ze'ev Jabotinsky, in memory of days when we fought and dreamt", signed by the poet Ya'akov Cahan and his wife Miriam. Dated: 24.3.1927. Ya'akov Cahan (1881-1960), poet, translator and Zionist activist, winner of Israel Prize for Literature, in 1953 and in 1958. Known as one of the outstanding poets of the Revisionist movement, and author of some of its well known songs: "Shir HaBiryonim", "Shir HaZeva'ot" and other songs. Zeev (Vladimir) Jabotinsky (1880-1940), Zionist leader, author and translator. Founder of the Revisionist Zionism. In his youth he dedicated his time to writing plays and literature but in 1903, following a series of pogroms in East Europe, he changed his views and became a committed Zionist. In World War I he was co-founder of the "Jewish Legion", Jewish units of the British Army, and later he himself joined the legion, in spite of his advanced age – 37. The dispute between Jabotinsky and the Zionist institutes, that were, in his opinion, too compromising, reached a peak when the "White Book" was published in 1922, after which Jabotinsky retired from the Zionist Organization and founded "Brit HaZionim HaRevisionistim"– the most extreme critic of the Zionist movement. In 1931 he undertook the role of Etzel commander and in 1936 instructed to "break the restraint" which marked the beginning of an open struggle against the British. During a visit to New-York in 1940, Jabotinsky died of a heart attack. [8], 98, [7] pp + LXXIII plates and [3] unnumbered plates at the beginning of the book, approx. 32 cm. Good condition. Some stains and damages (mainly at margins and first and last leaves). Half-leather binding, slightly damaged, with rubbings and peelings to spine and corners, partly repaired.

PASTERNAK LEONID OSIPOVICH (RUSSIAN 1862-1945), [ Illustration for KLICH (Call) almanac], 1915, typographic illustration, full sheet measuring 22.5 x 18.4 cm (8 7/8 x 7 1/4 in.), signed, dated, and inscribed in plate lower right LOT NOTES Leonid Pasternak, born Avrum Itshok-Leib, was a Russian painter and graphic artist of Jewish origin best known for his genre scenes and book illustrations, and also as the father of poet Boris Pasternak and architect Aleksandr Pasternak. After studying as a medic at the Moscow State University (1881-1883) and as a lawyer in the Novorossiysk University (until 1885), Pasternak decided to pursue a career in the arts. In the mid-1880s he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich as well as under Ivan Shishkin. After Pavel Tretyakov acquires a painting ( Letter from home) for his gallery, Pasternak decides to move to Moscow, where he exhibited with the Peredvizhnik artists and became a member of "Mir Iskusstva". In the late 1880s to early 1890s, he teaches at the A.O. Gunst School of Fine Arts. In 1894, he is invited to teach at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (later, many of its professors taught at VKhUTEMAS). Following the Revolution, Pasternak, along with his wife and daughters, emigrates to Germany, where he would make portraits of the likes of Einstein and Rilke, write a book on Rembrandt ( Rembrand and Jewishness in his Art, 1923), and exhibit twice at personal exhibitions (1927, 1932). In the late 1930s, Pasternak intended to return to the USSR, but after the passing of his wife decided to stay with his daughter in Oxford, where he died in 1945. PROVENANCE INFORMATION This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
