Deborah Griscom Passmore Watercolor & Gouache

    Est: $200 - $400

Deborah Griscom Passmore Watercolor & Gouache: a landscape of a lake with mountains in the background, a tree with a hollowed-out trunk in the foreground, surrounded by finely rendered flowers. Monogramed "DGP 1878" lower left. Deborah Griscom Passmore (1840-1911) was born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and educated at the School of Design for Women (now Moore College) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She is best-known for her work as an artist at the USDA in the 1890s and 1900s, where she recorded fruit by illustrating them in beautifully detailed watercolors; she was prolific, generating over 1500 watercolors for the agency. This particular drawing would have been done well before her Department of Agriculture career began. It is addressed or dedicated on the reverse to "Mrs E. G. Passmore Haverford College". Deborah's father was Everett Griscom Passmore, so this would have been her mother, Elizabeth (nee Knight). Provenance: Robert A Goldstein. Size: sight is 11.25" X 13.75", frame is 16.875" X 19.25". CONDITION: Very slightly toned, not examined out of its frame. Reframed in a contemporary gild frame (with an antqiue gilt fillet) by the most recent owner. Modern matting and materials.
