    Jun. 08, 2008

William Ordway Partridge (American, 1861-1930) Plaster Bust of a Woman Wearing a Laurel Wreath, c. 1895-99...

    Est: $300 - $400

William Ordway Partridge (American, 1861-1930) Plaster Bust of a Woman Wearing a Laurel Wreath, c. 1895-99, ht. 19 1/2 in. Provenance: From the sculptor, through a Milton, Massachusetts, family, thence to a private collection. Exhibited at the Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York, 1986, From the Studio: Selections of American Sculpture 1811-1941, (exhibition catalogue), p. 40, illustration no. 25; Hirschl & Adler, 1990, Primary Models: American Plaster, 1880-1935, (exhibition catalogue), p. 19, illustration no. 11. Partridge lost many of his plaster models in 1923, when they were crushed in a basement after a delivery of coal. This bust is believed to have survived that disaster by having been given to the Milton family c. 1899. This bust is typical of Partridge's turn of the century figures, including a related work in marble, Peace, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
