BIOGRAPHY: Arthur Parton was born in Hudson, New York March 26, 1842. He enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, studying under William Trost Richards. Gaining a keen grounding in the technical aspects of his art, Richards remained a strong influence.Parton was known as a Hudson River School painter, especially of river and mountain landscapes. His first exhibition was in 1862 in Philadelphia. Parton settled in New York City in 1865, and became well-established in the New York City art world. He was elected as an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design in 1871, and Academician in 1884. He was a regular exhibitor at the Academy for more than half a century. In 1886, he received the Gold Medal of the American Art Association and the Temple Medal from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He also won a competitive prize in the Paris Exposition in 1900, and the St. Louis Exposition of 1904.In 1869, Parton spent a year in Europe, where he was influenced by the Barbizon painters. The works that brought him public prominence were: On the Road to Mt. Marcy (1873, location unknown), A Mountain Brook (1874, location unknown), and Evening, Harlem River (1887, location unknown). His Loch Lomond, and Solitude (dates and locations unknown) attracted a great deal of attention at the Centennial Exposition of 1876 and gave him a national reputation. "In any foreign collection of paintings", the New York Post said, "Mr. Parton's work would be distinctly American."Along with his brother Ernest, Arthur Parton was a central member of the Hudson River School and his work follows the naturalistic mode. His year of study in Europe in 1869 influenced his style, creating pastoral landscapes with softer brushwork and pronounced attention to tone.Parton painted throughout the Catskills and Adirondack Mountains, and the Shenandoah, Hudson, and other area rivers. Catalogue Note: Arthur Parton was a successful artist from Hudson, New York who began his career as a Hudson River artist and became one of the few artists who was able to make the transition to the more fluid and poetic style initiated in this country by George Inness, commonly known as the Barbizon School. After the American Civil War, many American artists rejected the antebellum Hudson River School concept of landscape as an expression of God's bounty. Instead, they looked abroad for inspiration, especially to the Barbizon School of French landscape painting. With loose and heavily loaded brushstrokes they painted personal and romantic responses to the moods of the French countryside. The dominant tones of grey-blue and the darker greens were characteristic of this style.

Catalogue Note: Arthur Parton was a successful artist from Hudson, New York who began his career as a Hudson River artist and became one of the few artists who was able to make the transition to the more fluid and poetic style initiated in this country by George Inness, commonly known as the Barbizon School. Parton was fortunate to have been born in a town with a number of eminent painters as neighbors: Thomas Cole was just across the river, Frederick Church had settled on a nearby hill, Sanford Robinson Gifford was a resident of Hudson. Arthur may well have known these artists in his childhood. At the age of 17, Parton went to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts to study with William Trost Richards who had developed his style under the influence of Church and Cole as well as the English Pre-Raphaelites. He remained there until 1861. Richards frequently used the typical Cole devices of framing a scene with trees, a body of water dominating the middle ground and a panoramic view of an axial mountain in the background. All of these elements are clearly visible in this particular painting. By 1862, Parton was regularly exhibiting at the National Academy of Design in New York City. By 1864, Parton had moved to New York City, and continued to exhibit regularly at the National Academy of Design. He was able to spend the years 1869 to 1874 in Europe, first in Paris and then England and Scotland, where he experienced the work of the Barbizon artists for the first time and also encountered the Ruskin Pre-Raphaelites. This was a style that was to supplant the Hudson River School in America. After the American Civil War many American artists, rejected the antebellum Hudson River School concept of landscape as an expression of God's bounty. Instead they looked abroad for inspiration, especially to the Barbizon School of French landscape painting. With loose and heavily loaded brushstrokes they painted personal and romantic responses to the moods of the French countryside. The dominant tones of grey-blue and the darker greens were characteristic of this style. Upon his return in 1874, he was sufficiently successful to be able to afford a studio at the famous Tenth Street Studio Building, the hub of late nineteenth-century artistic entrepreneurism. Summers were spent either in the Catskill Mountains or the Adirondack region around Keene Valley. Here again Parton was fortunate to share his painting trips with his brother Ernest who was also a painter, and William Hart. Upon his return from Europe, Parton became known as "the American Corot." Lake George owes a great deal to the two traditions that most influenced Parton: the Cole-like framing devices of the Hudson River painters as well as the luminous sunset effects of light upon the clouds in the background, and the characteristic Barbizon palette. Although Parton stopped exhibiting his work by 1900, partly due to a change in public taste in favor of a more flamboyant Impressionism, he continued to paint for the remainder of his life and died in 1914 after a short bout with pneumonia.

Arthur Parton (American, 1842-1914) Summer Respite Signed 'Arthur Parton' bottom left; also illegibly inscribed on the upper stretcher verso, oil on canvas 16 1/2 x 24 in. (41.9 x 70.0cm) Provenance Private Estate. Kaminski Auctions, Boston, sale of June 20, 2015, lot 6099 (as Landscape). Acquired directly from the above sale. Collection of Dr. Douglas S. Holsclaw Jr., Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. Frame: 25 1/2 x 33 1/4 x 2 1/2 in. The canvas is slightly loose within its frame. The unlined canvas in overall good condition, with non obtrusive traces of abrasions along the outer edges of the canvas (because of the frame rubbing). Examination under UV light reveals a thick layer of old greenish varnish, which confirms the work would benefit from a light cleaning judging from the yellowed varnish and the scattered specks across the composition. We notice old restoration at bottom left corner in the water, at bottom center along the bottom outer edge, as well as at upper center and upper left in the sky. Minor inpainting also visible at upper right corner in the sky. The rest of the composition appears very smeary due to the excess of varnish, but we do not seem to spot more inpainting.
