(New York, 1878-1956) inscribed on base "Edith Barretto Parsons", marked "EGF 10," and "1980", posthumous cast authorized by Edith Gilman French, Tallix Foundry, with stamp, incised underside "#1," patinated bronze, 33 x 14-3/4 x 8-1/2 in. Provenance: Private Collection, Charlotte, North Carolina Note: There was a period in which Edith Parsons' fountains such as Turtle Baby were in great demand. The artist's family recast these and numbered them typically with Roman numerals. Records indicate that this fountain was cast in 1980. This fountain appears to be plumbed to be a working fountain. It would need some adaptive plumbing to be attached to a pump. It is not tested as a result. Some of the fountain pipes are bent.

Edith BarrettoÂ Stevens Parsons (American 1878-1956) "Frog Baby, " 1917, bronze fountain with multi-color greenish-gold and brown patina, signed "E. Parsons," with foundry mark for Roman Bronze Works, NYC. Provenance: Private Collection, Cleveland, OH. Edith Parsons studied with Daniel Chester French in New York and at the Art Students League.Â After she married and had children she began the series of garden sculptures for which she is best known, beginning withÂ Duck Baby, which was the popular hit of the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition. The exposition handbook stated: âIn the presence of so much that is weighty and powerful, the popularity ofÂ Duck BabyÂ is a significant and touching indication of the worldâs hunger for what is cheerful and mirth-provoking.â The same may be said ofÂ Turtle BabyÂ andÂ Frog Baby.Â Turtle Baby has long beenÂ a favorite of visitors to the Cleveland Museum of Art, here in Cleveland Ohio, where Neue Auctions is based.Â Dimensions: 40 in.h. Condition: Very good with some wear and streak marks to patina from handling and age. Has been in interior setting. Spouts in frogs mouths at base with some dents and bumps.

Edith Barretto Parsons Turtle Baby 1919 The bronze figural fountain as a standing child with turtles, atop naturalistic base issuing streams of water from four figural spouts around the base, signed in the casting and dated 1919, stamped GORHAM CO. FOUNDERS OBDU, a choice example displaying a nice contrast and combination of naturally developed green verdigris and rich brown patina. The most recent owner installed Turtle Baby in the spring and had the figure removed in the fall, resulting in a desirable patina achieved only by time. Measures 17 x 7 x 6 inches. We happily provide seamless in-house packing and shipping services on nearly everything we sell.
