    Antonio Parreiras (1860 - 1937) Brazil, O/C

    Est: $3,000 - $6,000

Attractive coastal landscape by Antonio Parreiras, a Brazilian artist who was also a designer and illustrator. He went to art school in Rio de Janeiro, but found free painting was more to his liking. He was tutored by by Jorge Grimm, a German artist, then became self-taught. He studied in Venice in the 1880's and became Professor of Landscape painting in Brazil, where he introduced his students to plein-air painting (painting in the open air), then set up his own art school. In the early 1900's he set up a second studio in Paris, and in 1925 he was chosen Brazil's best artist. Parreiras did a lot of historical and nude paintings, and expressed himself best in landscapes, which combined European influences with those of his native Brazil. The painting was done the year before he died. Signed and dated 1936 in the lower left. The overall size is 13 3/4 x 17 5/8 in. wide and the sight size is 9 1/2 x 13 1/2 in. wide. With provenance and original photo of the artist.
