  • MIGUEL PARRA (Valencia, 1780 – Madrid, 1846). "Still life". Oil on canvas. Signed the lower right corner. It has a carved wooden frame c. 1820.
    Jan. 25, 2024

MIGUEL PARRA (Valencia, 1780 – Madrid, 1846). "Still life". Oil on canvas. Signed the lower right corner. It has a carved wooden frame c. 1820.

    Est: €22,000 - €24,000

MIGUEL PARRA (Valencia, 1780 - Madrid, 1846). "Still life". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. It has a carved wooden frame c. 1820. Measurements: 103 x 72,5 cm; 118 x 87 cm (frame). Still life resolved with a naturalistic language, where the artist arranges a multitude of elements that define his technical skill and his compositional mastery. On a sober table of grained wood and following the Baroque still life tradition, the artist creates a scene set in semi-darkness, where the elements stand out for their expressive colouring in contrast with the blackness of the background. The artist demonstrates his virtuosity by adding a vase to the scene, thus elevating the genre of the more traditional still life. In addition, this still life has numerous varieties of foodstuffs such as nuts, strawberries, peaches, cherries and coconuts, which are not usually found in this type of representation. The work shows a perfect mastery of the qualities that are reflected in the transparency of the glass, the wicker of the basket, the earthenware of the plate and the brightness of the jug in the background, which is overshadowed by the darkness of the background. Miguel Parra trained at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia, where his teachers were Benito Espinós and Vicente López, who became his brother-in-law. A painter of vases and still lifes and a notable portraitist, he also produced landscapes, ornaments and large religious compositions, such as the paintings that decorate the doors of the Reliquary in Valencia Cathedral. His work was continued by his son, José Felipe Parra, and by his grandson, named after him. His progress in oil, tempera and fresco painting earned him a good reputation in artistic circles from a very early age, winning several prizes in the general competitions of the San Carlos Academy (1795, 1798 and 1801). In fact, he was appointed professor at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts and chamber painter to King Ferdinand VII and Queen Isabella II. A painter of success and honours, an academician of San Carlos and San Fernando, Parra was also commissioned to set up the Provincial Museum of Valencia, where a large part of his work is to be found. In 1818 Parra painted the "Triumphal Entry of Ferdinand VII into Saragossa", now in the Royal Palace in Madrid, a painting which is a good example of the type of art devoted to political propaganda at the time, as well as representing a highly significant and almost unknown part of the Valencian artist's output. Parra is currently represented in the Museo del Prado and the Museo de Bellas Artes San Pío V in Valencia, among others, as well as in important private collections.

    Est: €9,000 - €10,000

MIGUEL PARRA (Valencia, 1780 - Madrid, 1846). "Still life of hunting". Oil on canvas. It has a 19th century frame. Signed in the lower right area (on the stone). Measurements: 65 x 86 cm; 89 x 109 cm (frame). Still life resolved with a naturalistic language, where the artist arranges a multitude of elements that define his technical skill and his compositional mastery. In a sober dark interior and following the Baroque still life tradition, the artist creates a scene set in semi-darkness, where the elements stand out for their expressive colouring in contrast with the blackness of the background. Parra is known for his paintings of flowers and sweets, as well as for his use of large dimensions for his compositions, but one quality that stands out is his interest in the decorative arts and ornamentation, as he gave great prominence to the usual manufactures of the period, such as ceramics and textiles. In this particular case, this interest can be seen in the basket depicted next to the hare.
