  • Eric Parks, "Elvis," Pewter Sculpture
    Aug. 06, 2017

    Eric Parks, "Elvis," Pewter Sculpture

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Eric Parks (American, born 1948- ) - "Elvis" - 1977, pewter, signed, dated, and inscribed "Memphis development Foundation Memphis, Tenn." A small pewter sculpture depicting Elvis Presley, with his left arm raised and a guitar in his left. Approximate height 8.375", width 2.75", depth 3". Note: This sculpture is one of eight replicas of a 25' bronze sculpture designed by the artist for the Memphis Development Foundation to memorialize Elvis in the city. The project was to cost in excess of $10.5 million dollars, and was to be set on the riverfront. Replicas were to be gifted to anyone who donated $25 to the project. Before the casting process could commence on the 25' sculpture, the Presley estate sued the Foundation, saying they alone held the right to distribution of the late star's image, and the project was stopped altogether. As the project was not completed, the only replicas created were the original eight. According to a letter from the consignor, this example was the artist's personal replica, which he gifted to the consignor, who was at the time an employee of the Foundation. The original letter is included with the lot, in addition to an artist information sheet, a resolution, and 3 certificates of authenticity regarding the statuettes, in addition to multiple photographs documenting the creation of the maquette. Two additional sculptures, approximately 2" tall, are believed to have been created as well, though the whereabouts are unknown.
