    DESCRIPTION: Thomas Parkinson (English, 1763-1789). Oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman with a signet ring. Signed to lower right side "Parkinson 1781". Marked on reverse "Joseph Dymond of Blythe, 1797". Probably the astronomer and mathematician Joseph Dymond (1746-1796) born in Brierley, Yorkshire, England. In 1768 he accompanied William Wales to Fort Prince of Wales in Hudson Bay, Canada to observe the Transit of Venus, an important astronomical event vital to navigation at that time. He died at Blyth, Nottinghamshire on December 10, 1796 at the age of 50. MEASUREMENTS: 24-1/2" x 29-1/2". Overall with frame 29-1/2" x 33-1/2". CONDITION: Yellowing to varnish and craquelure. Old restoration and patch to rear. Minor losses to left side. Wear to frame.

    Flower Painting Made Easy. London: for Robert Sayer, [c.1766]. 4to (239 x 182 mm). 12pp. Engraved title and 72 plates, the title and 55 of the plates with hand-coloring. Modern full calf, spine lettered in gilt. A few stray spots, some coloring imperfect, faint stains to title, last two lines in imprint carefully excised. A rare instruction manual originally issued in parts. The text details the colors to be used in the painting of the engraved plates as well as the type of paint to purchase.
