VICENTE GARCIA DE PAREDES (Valencia, 1845 - Paris, 1903). "In the Park". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. It has slight lack of golden polychromy in the frame. Measurements: 62 x 88 cm; 87 x 114 cm (frame). A lady of haughty aspect, whose dark attire based on brown velvet and black silk, contrasts with the whiteness of her flesh, is accompanied by a friend and a girl who looks at her as if she was waiting for her mother's permission to go and play with her hoop. The elegance of the women contrasts with the group of workers who are picking up the excess fallen leaves and filling a cart with them. In the distance, carriages come and go along a path through the foliage. García de Paredes masterfully brushstrokes the sumptuous details of the ladies' clothing, while reserving a more sketchy brushstroke for the groups in the background, and also succeeds in recreating the relaxed atmosphere of an autumn afternoon in a stately park. Vicente García de Paredes was a Spanish painter who specialised in genre painting. He began his artistic training at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in his native city. He later travelled to Madrid, where he devoted himself to making copies for the Prado Museum. He then went to Rome, where he practised Orientalist painting. Finally he settled in Paris, where his favourite subject was the so-called "coat works". His paintings were very popular, as they were reproduced in a large number of illustrated magazines throughout Europe. For example in Le Monde Illustré, where many of his watercolours were published. Thanks to his skill, he exhibited many of his watercolours at the Cercle des Beaux-Arts and at the Société des Aquarelistes in Paris. He won the Bronze Medal at the Fine Arts Exhibition in Valencia. His works appear in the collections of Baroness Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Vicente García de Paredes was an admired painter of gallant and palatial scenes, like the one we are dealing with. In a sumptuous, tapestry-covered interior, a young woman sings before a select audience of elegant ladies and attentive gentlemen. The eighteenth-century costumes of the aristocratic classes have been depicted with precious care, extracting the right qualities from each garment: lace, silk, brocade, trimmings, lace, velvets and powdered wigs. A pianist and a cellist accompany the singing, while a third musician is resting. The ladies' little feet rest on soft cushions and a huge Persian carpet covers the floor of the room. Spanish school of the late 19th century. "Salon with figures". Following models by VICENTE DE PAREDES (Valencia, 1845-Paris, ca.1905). Oil on canvas. It presents some faults in the frame. Measurements: 61 x 106 cm; 86 x 131 cm (frame). In this salon scene, we can appreciate the influence of Vicente de Paredes, a painter known for his sumptuous interiors decorated in the style of Louis XV. In this painting, gentlemen and ladies dressed in richly brocaded silk and satin costumes are depicted in the eighteenth-century manner. The furniture and decorative objects also compete in elegance, and the canvases in carved frames that decorate the back wall, flanked by velvet draperies, also stand out. A woman plays the piano while the others listen to the music or converse in pairs. A brilliantly polychrome palette brings out the right textures and qualities in each piece of this interior, which is painted with precious brushstrokes.

In this interior scene, a symbolic element is added to the realism of the genre painting: the bubbles as an allegory of the passing of time, so used in the baroque vanitas. Vicente García de Paredes excelled in genre painting and his works became enormously popular thanks to the reproductions of them in European illustrated publications. He began his training at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in his native city and later moved to Madrid to make copies at the Prado Museum, an irrefutable method of learning for so many painters of his time. During these years of apprenticeship he took part in the Valencian Fine Arts Exhibition, winning a bronze medal in 1879. After receiving a pension from the Valencia Provincial Council, he moved to Rome. In the Italian capital he devoted himself to orientalist themes, which were very much in vogue at the time due to the influence of Mariano Fortuny. By 1884 he was in Paris, where he settled permanently. There his painting, while maintaining the previous tone, took on a greater personality and he definitively abandoned Orientalist themes to devote himself to the so-called "coat" paintings. These are mostly scenes of salons furnished in the style of Louis XV, with elegantly dressed eighteenth-century figures. At the same time he worked on genre themes, as in "A Wedding in Valencia", which received an honourable mention at the Paris Salon of 1900, "In the Absence of the Cardinal" and "Young Mother", which he submitted to the Salons of 1888 and 1889, respectively. Typically Parisian are his urban scenes, marked by a palette of pastel tones and a fine brushstroke. Paredes, as he signed himself, avoiding his first surname, was also a master watercolourist, and as such he exhibited regularly at the Circle of Fine Arts and the Paris Society of Watercolourists. The magazine "Le Monde Illustré" published many of his works, including "Un bautizo en España en el siglo XVII", an ingenious anachronism that aroused unusual interest among the public. His work was frequently praised by critics, such as the one that appeared in "La Ilustración Artística" in 1903, which praised Paredes's compositional complexity and creative freedom.
