Fiona Pardington A001171 2019 pigment inks on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag, edition of 10 signed F Pardington in ink verso 1100 x 1460mm PROVENANCE Private collection, Auckland. Fiona Pardington - A001171 Essay by ANDREW PAUL WOOD Fiona Pardington (MNZM, Chevalier Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) (Ngāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe and Ngāti Kahungunu and Clan Cameron of Erracht) found this figure among a collection of similar objects in the Wellcome Collection in London, on loan to the Science Museum Group. Nineteenth-century pharmaceutical entrepreneur Henry Wellcome (1853-1936) was an avid collector of medical antiquities, an interest that extended to the health and spiritual practices of other cultures. At first glance it looks like a hei-tiki, but it isn't a genuine taonga and therein lies the mystery. It is clearly not a mass-produced tourist tchotchke either - care and attention has gone into its making. We are unlikely to ever find out who made it, Māori, Pākehā, or perhaps even a German carver from the workshops of Saxony or Rhineland. From this strange collection Pardington created the TIKI: Orphans of Māoriland suite of photographs in 2019. Wellcome purchased these faux-tiki from London auction houses. What we can say about them is that they were most likely made for the local Pākehā, or European, market. Art historian Roger Blackley called it the "curio economy," the trade in Māori artifacts that flourished between 1880 and 1910. In this colonial period New Zealand was sometimes referred to as 'Maoriland' - when Pākehā were developing a nascent sense of national identity distinct from Britain, and Māori were fighting to keep control of their identity, representation, culture and land.¹ Pardington, viewing these objects through the lens of her own bicultural Māori and Pākehā ancestry, felt drawn to these objects and their cultural liminality. The resulting photographs offer an interesting counterpoint to Pardington's photographs of genuine hei-tiki, but her interest in bicultural in-between-ness and hybridity can be traced all the way back to her 1996 photograph of a bar of '˜Taniwha' brand soap. As with her photographs of taonga, Pardington takes a reparative, aesthetic approach that draws us in with the beauty of the image before we have a chance to consider all its implications and possible meanings.² A tight focus and concentration of multiple sources of light - fluorescent, LED and incandescent - on the subject, in interaction with the light-absorbing qualities of the black velvet backcloth, invests it with a luminous aura of animistic presence and significance. The smearing effect of the exposure animates the artefact as if it is moving, ghostly and somehow alive. Pardington recognises that these objects have something to say about where we've come from and perhaps were we are going. They are not insincere. They are not kitsch. They have an existence and an integrity all in their own right. They're trying to tell us something and Pardington's photographs ask that we stop and listen to what that might be. 1 Roger Blackley, Galleries of Maoriland: Artists, Collectors and the Māori World, 1880-1910. (Auckland: Auckland University Press, 2018) 2 Susan Best, Reparative Aesthetics: Witnessing in Contemporary Art Photography. (London: Bloomsbury Academic, 2015.) Chapter 4 passim.

Fiona Pardington Self Portrait gelatin silver

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Fiona Pardington Self Portrait gelatin silver print 175mm x 230mm Access, exploitation and privacy issues are explored in Pardington's Self Portrait. A sensual image is presented to the audience as exposed and objectified. She challenges her audience and tests their reactions to the image, at first promoting desire and later retreat. The image questions intentions as the viewer gazes at the woman and effectively confuses them and subverts the subject it originally attempts to present, the exposed, feminine woman. Pardington asserts her role as a photographer with the power to engage and subsequently disengage her audience in gender politics. This is tantamount to Fiona Pardington's oeuvre.

  • Fiona Pardington Sally and Donna gelatin silver
    Oct. 16, 2007

Fiona Pardington Sally and Donna gelatin silver

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Fiona Pardington Sally and Donna gelatin silver print title inscribed, signed and dated 1999 verso 285mm x 375mm Sally and Donna comes from a series of photographs referencing found medical texts. By changing their context, she has deliberately changed their meaning. A common theme in her work, it is not dissimilar to the way the 50's girls or the hei tiki are readdressed. By restaging them and suggesting we look at them in new ways, what was an image of women initially intended to illustrate muscle configuration, has become a strangely erotic and unsettling image. The titling of these works with strong old fashioned names adds further dimension to their oddness. EF

  • Fiona Pardington Hostess gelatin silver print
    Oct. 16, 2007

Fiona Pardington Hostess gelatin silver print

    Est: $2,500 - $3,500

Fiona Pardington Hostess gelatin silver print title inscribed, signed and dated 1993 verso 320mm x 260mm 'Hostess', is indicative to Pardington's early themes relating to perversity, deviancy and 'rituals' of the skin. The body is presented to the viewer, laid out and exposed. We are treated to a 'private viewing' of a much coveted and personal slice of skin - objectified for our pleasure. Pardington presents this androgynous image as a statement for breaking down barriers associated with gender politics. She skillfully navigates access and exploitation attached to the discovery of another human- at the core: skin. Notions of a caress, of love, intimacy and attachment between sexes emerge. We, as viewers are looking in, as if we too are the photographer- a voyeur -peering into a private affair. The subject is a stranger. We have no emotional involvement, yet does desire stir? Or, do we feel our power in this voyeuristic role has corrupted us, and we too have become the exploiter of a stranger, of an image, of a mirage? LH

  • Fiona Pardington Te Huia Kai Manawa - The Huia
    Oct. 16, 2007

Fiona Pardington Te Huia Kai Manawa - The Huia

    Est: $15,000 - $20,000

Fiona Pardington Te Huia Kai Manawa - The Huia That Consumes My Heart, 2002 C-type, large format, digital, print, edition of 3 1320mm x 1620mm Provenance: Exhibited Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna O WaiwetuTe Puawai o Ngai Tahu 10 May - 24 August 2003  Fiona Pardington has a long held interest in photographic still life, and particularly in the communicative power of the subjects she employs. Recent work has seen her explore collections hidden away in museums; items deemed unworthy of display, because they are damaged or have been repaired. To the artist this adds to their power rather than detracts from it. They are survivors with outward signs of use. Each taonga, whether it be hei tiki, mere or bird feather, are displayed on luscious backgrounds, confronting us with their undeniable presence and importance. In this large scale photograph, the presentation of a single elegant feather, glossy blue black and gleaming white, represents a poignant loss of something beautiful. "... she invokes the elusive spirit of the huia. More sacred to Maori than any other bird, the huia was associated with dignity and wisdom, its feathers worn only by chiefs of distinction. Known for its flute-like song, metallic blue-black plumage and distinctive white-banded tail feather, the huia belonged to an ancient family of birds found only in New Zealand. Already fragile owing to hunting by Maori to create adornments and marereko, the huia population was decimated at the turn of the century by European settler demand for the dramatic feathers as a fashion accessory. Here, Pardington uses the sacred feathers to symbolise a range of bereavements - the erosion of Maori and Ngai Tahu culture, the loss of trail lands and sacred treasures." Felicity Milburn, Te Puawai o Ngai Tahu, Christchurch Art Gallery, 2003. Long extinct, our only examples of bird and feather are brought back out into the light, personalized as individual portraits, both precious and rare. She is best known as a specialist in 'pure' or analogue photographic darkroom technique, most notably hand printing and toning. EF

  • Fiona Pardington Anthirium gelatin silver print
    Oct. 16, 2007

Fiona Pardington Anthirium gelatin silver print

    Est: $2,500 - $3,000

Fiona Pardington Anthirium gelatin silver print title inscribed, signed and dated 1993 300mm x 225mm Fiona Pardingtons image of an Anthirium is strange and unsettling. Ironically known for their brilliant colours and their long life after being cut, neither of these factors have much bearing in this situation. Stripped of colour and stilled by the photographer's lens, this image has much to thank Robert Mapplethorpe for. Like the American photographer, Pardington arranges the plant as carefully as a human subject, a sensual depiction of flowers that are intimate, erotic, and technically accomplished. EF

A group of images found in a skip and reshot by Pardington, they are a continuation of her interest in subjects considered 'not good enough'. Originally shot as soft porn, these slightly grubby, amateurish models are given renewed representation in a gallery context. Fiona Pardington is represented by Two Rooms, Auckland; McNamara, Wanganui and Nadene Milne, Arrowtown. Emma Fox
