Périclès Pantazis, Greek 1849-1884- A wooded landscape with cows at pasture; oil on canvas, signed 'Pantazis' (lower left), 36.5 x 53.3 cm. Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist's family in Athens in 2000 by the present owner. Note: Pantazis was academically trained at the Athens School of Arts from 1866-1871 and subsequently at the Munich Academy, before moving to Paris in 1872. In Paris he came into contact with the work of Gustave Courbet (1819-1877), which was to have a long-lasting influence on him. Here, very much inspired by the Barbizon school, Pantazis has built up a composition with sensitivity to the natural world, particularly in the gentle treatment of the grazing cows and the overall suffusion of pale silvery light, which suggests sunshine after a storm. Indeed, reviewing Pantazis’s work in 1876, art critic Mark Very noted that 'Pantazis is a faithful and sincere lover of nature'.

TITLE: Still life with grapes oil on canvas Pericles Pantazis was born in Athens in 1849 and studied at The School of Fine Art, Athens between 1866 and 1871 under Nikiforos Lytras. He then continued his studies for one year at the Munich Academy of Fine Art. After that he moved to Marseille to be taught by Gustave Courbet and Antoine Chintreuil. In 1873 Pantazis moved to Brussels where he became a member of an anti-academic artistic group called Circle de la pâte (the circle of colour), and a member of Les XX. In 1878 he represented Greece at The International Art Biennale of Paris. He died in Brussels before he turned thirty-five from chronic tuberculosis. His works can be found in many notable private and public collections such as: The Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp - Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels - The National Gallery, Athens and The Leventis Gallery, Nicosia, Cyprus. Pericles Pantazis is well known for his superb oils. Still life with grapes which originally belonged to his sister is a fine example of his work.

Pericles Pantazis was one of the first Greek painters to explore the new discourse suggested by French Realism and Impressionism. Significantly, each artist began his training in Nikiforos Lytras' Athens studio during the early 1870s, before establishing a vision and career in a foreign city. In 1872 he moved to Paris, and it was there he met Gustave Courbet, whose approach to painting became the cornerstone of Pantaszis style.
