CLARA PANCOAST (1872-1959) Guenthers Mill Etching and aquatint with pastel highlights 8in. x 10in. Signed lower right This etching depicts a famous Texas landmark in San Antonio, Guenthers Mill. In 1849 Carl Hilmar Guenther, a millwright apprentice, left Europe for America. He settled in Fredericksburg and built a mill on Live Oak Creek, but in 1858 a drought depleted the local grain and the creek dried up. Guenther decided to close the mill and relocate to San Antonio on the more powerful San Antonio River just south of the center of the city. In 1898 Guenthers Mill was renamed Pioneer Flour Mills. The company is still controlled by Guenther's descendants with eight of ten board seats belonging to family members. Old label verso: Framed by Studer San Antonio

CLARA PANCOAST (1872-1959) Bluebonnet Hill, 1920s Oil on canvas 16in. x 20in. Signed lower right Titled verso The Edgar B. Davis Wildflower Competition was one of the most significant events in Texas during the early part of the twentieth century. More than $53,000 in prize money and over $350,000 spent on events during the three years it was held made the competition the richest and most lucrative art competition held up to that time in the United States. Its influence continued to be felt decades later, as many of the nationally-known artists chose to stay in Texas. Those transplant artists, as well as the legacy of the competition, were a pivotal turning point in the art history of Texas. This magnificent bluebonnet painting, with rich impasto and vivid color, was Clara Pancoast's entry into the Texas Wildflower Competition. It speaks highly of this painting that it was selected to be included in the exhibition over hundreds of other entries from nationally-prominent artists. The painting shows the influence of Pancoast's teacher, José Arpa, known for his brilliant color and light-infused compositions. The original hand-carved frame with its simple but elegant design is included with the painting. Exhibited: The San Antonio Art League Texas Wildflower Competition (exhibition label verso)
