Filippo Palizzi (Italian 1818-1899) - Country scene with shepherd and goats

    Est: -

Oil painting on canvas Signed lower right. "With Filippo Palizzi we have the first beginning of pictorial realism. After the Posillipo school, the observation of the truth becomes the object of pictorial speculations. Since the 1950s he has been interested in photography, which he practices with in-depth technical knowledge. He used the photos that he developed himself, as observation and models for his paintings. In this way he developed an immediate and direct naturalism, reconnecting with the Flemish animalist school of the 17th century, but he pays much more attention to details, combining neoclassical dignity with genre painting of popular costumes. His trip to Europe and Paris (1955) allows him to perfect his luministic investigation. On his return he stays in Florence. Here he meets Giovanni Fattori and the Macchiaioli. He states that what one must look for in modern painting is subtlety and totality, with these concepts Palizzi defines his poetics which is based on his personal conception of the "macchia" meaning that the "totality" had to be the expression of the whole, of the whole of the macchiaioli. which had to be completed by the finesses, or by the rendering of perceptive subtleties. The chiaroscuro landscapes had to be subjected to minute attention, of a micrographic nature to the effects of light and had to be realized with the tip of the brush to finally express the totality of the work. The painting in question is a typical example of this pictorial conception. The final product of what he himself defined as a cosmic naturalism." STUDIO ASOR

Filippo Palizzi (1818 - 1899), Little Girl Carrying Sticks.

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Oil on canvas. 15 1/2 x 19 in. Little Girl Carrying Sticks is a lovely, well-balanced painting of a young girl coming around a rocky corner of a mountain. The painting depicts the youthful momentum of an energetic child at work, helping adults at a farm or a country estate. The shade on the girl allows Palizzi to beautifully depict her facial features and clothing, with much attention to the textures of the wheat stalks, sticks, fabric, and the basket. The well-lit background shows the winding Italian countryside. The girl’s bare feet adds a layer of storytelling to the scene. This intimate painting is in good condition with rich colors. There are varnish crackles throughout with two small blemishes on right top and bottom corners.

Oil painting on canvas Signed lower right. "With Filippo Palizzi we have the first beginning of pictorial realism. After the school of Posillipo, the observation of truth becomes the subject of pictorial speculation. Since the 1950s he has been interested in photography which he practices with in-depth technical knowledge. He used the photos that he he developed himself, as observation and models for his paintings. In this way he matured an immediate and direct naturalism, referring to the Flemish animalist school of the seventeenth century, but he pays much more attention to details, combining neoclassical dignity with the genre painting of costumes His visits to Europe and Paris (1955) allowed him to perfect his luministic investigation. On his return he stayed in Florence. Here he met Giovanni Fattori and the Macchiaioli. totality, with these concepts Palizzi defines his poetics which is based on his personal conception of the "stain" meaning that the "totality" it had to be the expression of the whole, of the whole of the stain which had to be completed by the subtleties, or rather by the rendering of perceptive subtleties. The chiaroscuro landscapes had to undergo meticulous attention, of a micrographic nature, to the effects of light and had to be created with the tip of a brush to finally express the entirety of the work. The painting in question is a typical example of this pictorial conception. Final product of what he himself called a cosmic naturalism. "STUDIO ASOR
