Between 1918 and 1925, alongside Le Corbusier, Ozenfant worked to form the Purism movement, which attempted to restore order and structure following the war. In his early works, Ozenfant developed an interest in stability, clarity, and harmony, reflected in his works through his use of clean line, geometric shapes, and simplification of details. But from 1925 onwards, the subjects and style of his works changed, instead experimenting with the human form in vast spaces, influenced by his trips to the Middle East, specifically the Egyptian desert. Unlike some of his contemporaries, such as the cubists, who experimented with more fragmented or distorted representations of the human form, Ozenfant approached figures with a sense of simplification and clarity that aligned with his Purist philosophy. His work is characterised by a unique blend of abstraction and a strong sense of order, with figures formed with geometric precision. His work Baigneuses Au Clair De Lune, 1929, exhibited by Léonce Rosenberg at Galerie de L'Effort Moderne, demonstrates his early interest in the lines and shapes of the human body, which he called 'Lines of Force' in his diary Journey through Life, 1939. The painting experiments with human figures in movement, relaxing, or bathing. During this time, we begin to see more texture to Ozenfant's work, such as Baigneuses au Promontoire, 1931, which uses a thick impasto application of paint to present the bodies in relief. Other figure paintings include Femme et Enfant, 1928, which sold at Sotheby's in 2015, and Le Sommeil, 1931, which sold at Christie's in 2016.Today, his works are held in multiple public collections across the globe, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Louvre, Paris, The Tate Gallery in London and the National Gallery of Australia.

Amédée Ozenfant, Nature morte devant une fenêtre, 1922

        Est: €40,000 - €60,000

Signed and dated 'ozenfant 1922' in opaque white lower left. With a photo-certificate (no. 253/2016) by Pierre Guénégan, Paris, dated 19 October 2016 Today, the present crayon drawing dating from 1922 from the first phase of Amédée Ozenfant's Purist output is one of the rare examples of his works from this period. Back then, he produced an experimental sequence of different new compositional variants in what was one of his preferred media. “Nature morte devant une fenêtre” is as such invaluable early testimony to Ozenfant's personal exploration of his own, changed formal artistic principles. Together with Charles-Edouard Jeanneret (Le Corbusier) he had in 1918 outlined in the treatise “Après le cubism” the development of a theory that he now put to the test in artistic images: By referring to an object the still life, a classic theme in western painting, now served in exemplary manner to demonstrate the rational concept of a geometricized, planimetric order within the pictorial surface. Ozenfant succeeds in grouping a few vessels in a flat, abstract pictorial space that seems somehow to reflect a traditional pattern of a picture detail (table, wall and window). They are only defined as objects due to their contour lines. The strictly planar composition and the reduced colours neutralize any illusion of corporeality and interconnect the individual forms. In the process, thanks to the medium of coloured chalk and by means of gently tempered transparent transitions the abstract pictorial elements meld inseparably into a new and balanced planar pictorial figure. The graduated and carefully distributed colour tones, the carefully positioned asymmetry and the ornamental appeal of the slender flat flutes such as glasses have intensify the allure and vibrancy of this otherwise hermetically self-contained composition. AMÉDÉE OZENFANT (french, 1886-1966) "NATURE MORTE - LE PICHET BLANC" Signed bottom right, pastel and gouache on paper. Executed in 1921. overall (approx.): 13 3/8 x 12 in. (34 x 30.5cm) provenance: The Artist. Galerie Percier, Paris, France (acquired directly from the above in 1928). Private Collection Bérès, Cannes, France. Galerie Mazarine, Paris, France (acquired directly from the above in 1974). Private Collection, France. note: We wish to thank Mr. Pierre Guéneguan for confirming the authenticity of this work, which will also be included in the forthcoming supplement to the Ozenfant catalogue raisonné. A certificate of authenticity may be purchased directly from Mr. Guéneguan by the successful bidder. A contemporary of Picasso, Matisse, Léger and Lipchitz in pre-war Paris, artist, writer and theorist Amédée Ozenfant is perhaps best known as a founding father of the Purist art movement, which he created along with Swiss architect Charles-Edouard Jeanneret ("Le Corbusier"). The two artists first met in the French capital in 1917 and together developed the doctrines of Purism, which they articulated in their 1918 treatise Après le Cubisme and continued in the periodical L'Esprit Nouveau between the years 1920-1925. Perhaps in response to the chaotic social and political climate following WWI, the painter and the architect rejected the unstructured spontaneity and ornamental style of the dominant Cubist movement. Instead, they sought a purer art form, one that was rooted in the industry and technology of the current age, yet universal and timeless such that it could transcend its era. Governed by the laws of science, this "modern classicism" approached the construction of pure beauty through mathematical order and logic, rigor and coherence. Inspired by the techniques of industrial design, they called for carefully balanced compositions of controlled geometric forms and flat, juxtaposed planes of simple colors. As products of the machine age, the ideal subjects of their paintings were common utilitarian items such as glasses, bottles and instruments, which Ozenfant and Le Corbusier believed to be the perfect "object prototypes" due to their timeless and permanent nature. Composed of such timeless objects and other precisely rendered geometric forms, the present work perfectly encapsulates this Purist ethos. With its harmonious and rational arrangement, "Nature Morte - Le Pichet Blanc" is a static expression of stability, a poetic celebration of an industrial civilization.
