    Report of a Geological Survey of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota; and incidentally of a Portion of Nebraska Territory 2 volumes. One volume is the text and plates together; the other is the illustration volume only from another set. Illustrated with 27 steel-engraved plates of fossils, 17 hand-colored folding sections, 2 hand-colored maps, and a large folding geological map. 12 1/4 x8 3/4, original blind-stamped cloth. First Edition. The plates, sections and two smaller maps are duplicated in each volume, but the large general map is present only in the atlas volume (lacking from first vol.). Owens explored into Minnesota and to Lake Winnepeg, then into Iowa and the South Dakota Badlands. This report is, "the most sumptuous American geological publication to that time, it is still of great significance" (DSB). The illustration volume has a gift inscription from Senator Henry Dodge (1782-1867), the territorial governor of Wisconsin.
