Isaak Ouwater (1748-1793), 'Wintry Pleasure on Ice', c. 1770

        Est: €24,000 - €30,000

Oil on canvas, relined Netherlands, around 1770 Isaak Ouwater (1748-1793) - Veduta painter from Amsterdam Signed lower center 'Isaak Ouwater Fecit' Registered in The Getty Provenance Index Database Overall dimensions, framed: 72 x 60 cm, stretcher frame: 53 x 42 cm Splendid stucco frame Good condition Provenance: since approximately 100 years in Austrian Family Collection An extremely rare and magnificent work of Isaak Ouwater, which gives evidence of his skill at the highest level; paintings by Ouwater fetch up to over 270,000 Euro at international auctions This excellent oil painting by the Dutch veduta painter Isaak Ouwater (1748-1793) dates to the 1770s. It features a winter landscape - a subject that is very rare in Ouwater's oeuvre, as he usually painted cityscapes. The special feature of this atmospheric painting is immediately striking: The center of the image is occupied by a huge and finely ramified tree. It is covered with a layer of delicately painted snow. The tree is so engaging that the narrative events in the lower part of the painting almost disappear in a barely noticeable background. However, the studying of the individual groups of figures on the ice gives an equally great pleasure: In the foreground, a skater just slipped on the ice; on the left, a man pushes a woman with a cart and behind them, a man ties up the shoes of his son. The background, displaying ice-skaters, a sleigh with horse, a mill, and boats, is lovingly captured in every detail up to the horizon and testifies that Ouwater was a true master of perspective. Also, the light conditions in this painting are evidence of a skill at the highest level: the tone-on- tone sky shows a delicate reddish light shining through the clouds, which already bears witness to the upcoming sunset. The painting is signed lower center 'Isaak Ouwater Fecit'. Reverse on the stretcher and the frame are several stamps and remains of labels, among others „Hoek van Holland" and „A. Welti-Furrer" from Switzerland. The painting is registered in The Getty Provenance Index Database as it was sold in 1828 at the auction house Philipps from Esq. J. Taylor to a certain Hull. The original canvas has been trimmed around the margin and mounted onto another canvas. It has been bound with framing paper once around which cannot be seen when framed. The painting is covered by a layer of varnish and is partially yellows due to its age; few scratches and some white colour marks on the edges as well as traces of framing can be seen. The frame is in an age-related condition with some paint flaking and minor loss of material. The overall dimensions, framed, are 72 x 60 cm. The stretcher frame measures 53 x 42 cm. Isaak Ouwater (1748-1793) The veduta painter Isaak Ouwater spent his brief but artistically productive life mostly in Amsterdam. According to the Dutch Institute for Art History (RKD) in The Hague, Ouwater studied in Amsterdam, Haarlem and Utrecht. He painted landscape and architectural motifs with a focus on city views - especially from Amsterdam. Due to Ouwater's outstanding craftsmanship, his works achieve maximum prices at the largest auction houses of the international art market. Works by Ouwater are displayed at the Museum Smidt van Gelder in Antwerp, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, as well as the museums of The Hague, Haarlem, Hoorn, Utrecht, and Nottingham.

Ouwater 1787 and bears signature on the building lower right: Van der Heyden oil on canvas, in an English carved and gilt wood frame PROVENANCE With Edward Speelman, London; From whom acquired by the late father of the present owners in 1964. NOTE This view of the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam is taken from the Westermarkt. The building in the right foreground is the so-called 'Vleeshal' or Westerhal, which was a civic guard house built in 1619 and demolished in 1857. The houses on the other side of the canal were also demolished, at the end of the 19th century, to give way to the Raadhuisstraat. The first fully visible house on the left of the composition (with a maidservant on the stairs) later became known as Keizersgracht 187. When Ouwater painted this view (during the 1780s) it was lived in by the bookmerchant, lottery-owner and art collector Jan de Groot (1733-1801), who had lived there since 1777 and owned it since 1781. The sale of his estate in 1804 included a large number of topographical views by contemporary artists, including 15 paintings by Ouwater (sold in 13 lots); one of these paintings (part of a pair) depicted the same view as the present scene, however is listed as of lesser dimensions ('hoog 21 duim breed 30 duim' - a duim being an inch). A view by Ouwater (signed and dated 1779) from the other side of the river, looking towards the Westerhal and the Westermarkt, with the Westerkerk in the background, was sold London, Sotheby's, 3 December 1997, lot 77, for £160,000. We are grateful to Drs. Charles Dumas and Drs. Richard Harmanni for endorsing the attribution to Isaac Ouwater, on the basis of a photograph, and for their kind assistance with the preparation of this catalogue entry (written communications 17 & 19 January 2006).

NOTES Ouwater, one of the most famous eighteenth century painters of cityscapes, is known to have painted views of Haarlem, Amsterdam, The Hague and other cities. He was greatly praised by his contemporaries for his detailed rendering of brickwork and cobblestones, lively staffage, topografical accuracy and his treatment of light, with the streets, squares and buildings of the city often bathing in a warm glowing sunlight (see R. van Eynden and A. van der Willigen, Geschiedenis der Vaderlandsche Schilderkunst, Haarlem, 1817, II, p. 350). Ouwater painted the Dam and the Nieuwe Kerk (for which, see lot 1219) on more than one occasion, from different angles. A view showing the Town Hall on the right and the Nieuwe Kerk on the left, is in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (Loos, Jansen and Kloek, op. cit., p. 80, illustrated). The Town Hall is built on the site of an earlier, Gothic building (recorded by Pieter Saenredam in a picture in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). By the mid-seventeenth-century, there were several good reasons to replace the old building: the administration of the rapidly growing city had outgrown its accommodation; moreover, the condition of the medieval building had deteriorated to the point where it became dangerous to enter the premises. A new, larger town hall was badly needed. While the construction of the new town hall was still in progress, the old one burned down. Apart from the practical reasons for embarking on the project of building a new town hall, the growing self-confidence of the city, which mainly resulted from the successful negotiations of the Mnster Peace Treaty in 1648, needed an outlet. A project which comprised the planning and construction of the largest government building in seventeenth-century Europe proved the ideal public relations effort for the rich and powerful and above all republican city of Amsterdam. The general euphoria induced the city administrators to choose the most prestigious design from several plans submitted by the leading architects of the day. Brick was considered too pedestrian a construction material. A yellowish sandstone from Bentheim in Germany was used for the entire building (the stone has darkened considerably in the course of time), while only marble was considered good enough for the interior. Jacob van Campen drew inspiration from the public buildings of Rome. A new Capitol was built for the Amsterdam burgomasters who thought of themselves as the consuls of the new Rome of the North. Until 1808 the building was used as a town hall. Subsequently, King Louis Napoleon turned it into a royal palace. The galleries were provided with wooden partitionings to create additional rooms. A balcony was added to the facade to meet royal public relations requirements. Splendid Empire furniture - still part of the collection of the palace today - served to modernise the interior decoration. Louis Napoleon's modifications have since been reversed and the palace restored to its original state of a government building based on classical models.

Katz, The Hague, 1966. R.P. Schoonheim, Wassenaar, 1966. Anonymous sale, Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 22 May 1989, lot 92 (to Dreesmann). Dr Anton C.R. Dreesmann (inventory no. A-73). NOTES The winter scene depicts the Polderhuis on the left and the overhaal, or slipway, on the right. The Polderhuis was a famous pub, located near the Weteringpoort (today the corner of the Ruysdaelkade and the Stadhouderskade) that was only demolished in 1924. The slipway was used to pull up the vegetable barges, which came from the Boerenwetering, to the higher water-level of the Mennonietensloot. The latter was filled in circa 1880, becoming the present Museumplein, while the Boerenwetering was tranformed into the canal found at present between the Ruysdaelkade and the Hobbemakade. In Ouwater's time, the area was still quite picturesque and rural, with vegetable gardens lined up along the Boerenwetering, and was a popular neighbourhood for a pleasant stroll or a quiet drink. The view is found elsewhere in eighteenth-century painting, for example Jan ten Compe's View of the Polderhuis and the overhaal, Amsterdam in the Amsterdams Historisch Museum (see H.C. de Bruijn, 'Amsterdamse gezichten van Jan ten Compe (1713-1761)', Antiek, no. 8, March 1974, pp. 621-4). PROVENANCE Anonymous sale; Christie's, London, 13 April 1984, lot 88, as dated 1777. With Des Lyons-Coulemonde-Samson, Paris, 1988, as dated 1777. Anonymous sale; Ader Picard Tajan, Paris, 25 June 1991, lot 24, as dated 1777 (to Dreesmann). Dr Anton C.R. Dreesmann (inventory no. A-80). NOTES Dating to circa 1490, the Munttoren was originally built as the western tower of the Regulierspoort. Heavily damaged after a fire in 1618, the upper part was rebuilt to a design by Hendrick de Keyser. When, in 1672, the city of Amsterdam was given the right to strike its own coinage, the actual coins were struck in the guardhouse next to the tower, that thereby became known by its current name, which means 'Mint Tower'. The original storm-indicator was a gilt ox, so designed because the Regulierpoort used to be the gate through which cattle were driven towards the Ossenmarkt in the Kalverstraat. During a huge storm in 1640, the ox was blown into the Singel and replaced by the cockerel visible in the present lot (see J.H. Kruizinga and J.A. Banning, Amsterdam van A tot Z, Amsterdam, 1966, p. 323). For the artist, see the note to lot 1225.
