Justin Pierre OUVRIE (1806-1879) Camp militaire devant le château de Vincennes, avec le donjon et la sainte Chapelle. Huile sur panneau 18 x 22,8 cm. Cette vue du château de Vincennes sous le Second Empire rappelle la fonction encore très opérationnelle de cette forteresse datant du règne de Charles V. On y trouvait alors un arsenal et « L’école à feu », pour l’artillerie, qui pouvait s’exercer dans le Polygone de tir, non loin. Justin Ouvrié, éminent peintre de vues urbaines et de sites pittoresques, inlassable voyageur en Angleterre, Allemagne, Autriche, Hollande, Suisse, connaissait bien Vincennes. En 1864, à la demande du baron Haussmann, le veduttiste avait réalisé un cycle de 40 vues gravées présentant les aménagements du Bois de Vincennes, avec « les sites les plus intéressants du merveilleux parc que l’Empereur a offert aux habitants du faubourg populaire ». Son tableau représentant Le Chalet de la Porte-Jaune, au bois de Vincennes est au Musée Carnavalet (inv. P1306). Dans la vente de son atelier, le 21 décembre 1874 (Drouot, salle 4, Me Couturier) on trouve également deux vues de Vincennes peintes par lui, et plusieurs en photographies, que l’artiste avait gardé dans sa collection personnelle. 600 / 800 €

(hors cadre) Marques : signée et datée en bas à gauche Justin Ouvrié 1838 Excellente condition, restauration d'une trace d'humidité à peine invisible Provenance : descendance du roi Louis-Philippe XD Belle aquarelle gouachée du château de Twickenham autrement connu sous le nom d'ORLEANS HOUSE, qui fut la demeure du roi Louis-Philippe et de sa famille de 1814 à 1817 puis de son fils le duc d'Aumale de 1852 à 1871. Le château de Twickenham dont il ne reste aujourd'hui que la tour octogonale est, avec le château de Claremont, l'une des deux demeures d'Angleterre les plus emblématiques de l'histoire du roi Louis-Philippe et de la famille d'Orléans. Louis-Philippe Ier y était si attaché que lors de sa visite à la reine Victoria en 1844 à Windsor, il revint planter un arbre dans le parc d'ORLEANS HOUSE, scène qu'immortalisa Justin Ouvrié, peintre officiel du roi Louis-Philippe à qui le souverain commanda plusieurs vues du château de Twickenham comme l'attestent le Journal des commandes et acquisitions du Garde-meuble royal de 1831 à 1848 et le célèbre tableau par Justin Ouvrié représentant le roi Louis-Philippe plantant un arbre dans le parc d'Orléans House avec la reine Victoria, oeuvre également commandée par le roi des Français à l'artiste pour la galerie Victoria de son château d'Eu Grâce au Journal des commandes et acquisitions du garde-meuble royal et à l'Inventaire et enregistrements des aquarelles, dessins, émaux et miniatures du garde-meuble royal on sait que Justin Ouvrié fut chargé par le roi Louis-Philippe de figurer plusieurs des demeures du souverain, dont le château de Twickenham dès 1836 (voir ill. A) et celui de la Ferté-Vidame (ill. B), le plus souvent commandées en plusieurs exemplaires, dont très certainement la présente aquarelle fit partie, tant le roi Louis-Philippe Ier semble être le seul à avoir eu l'intérêt et l'idée de commander sous son règne la vue de certaines des demeures de sa vie à Justin Ouvrié, un de ses peintres officiels installé à Paris A la chute de la monarchie de Juillet, le duc d'Aumale s'installa dès 1852 à Orléans House dont il fit l'écrin de ses fabuleuses collections aujourd'hui conservées au musée Condé à Chantilly, y recevant tout ce que l'Angleterre et le monde entier comptaient d'élites politiques et intellectuels, de nombreuses fêtes et événements familiaux des Orléans y furent célébrés en présence de la reine Victoria et ce jusqu'en 1871, date à laquelle le duc d'Aumale rentra en France après l'abrogation de la première loi d'exil.
