In his free time in Germany, he got hold of a surgeon's set of scalpel and bits of wood, and began carving various shapes and forms to while away his free time. Leaving the Armed Forces in 1971, he turned to carpentry to support his family, while keeping up his wood carving as a hobby. His works became popular enough that he was able give up carpentry and support himself solely on his wood carving.Outhouse's works are included prominent collections such as the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Museum of History, formerly the Museum of Man.
