Artist Edmund Osthaus was born in Germany and formally studied painting there before emigrating to Ohio in 1883. Greatly influenced by his mentor Christian Kroener, a well-known animal painter, Osthaus dedicated himself to painting portraits of pedigreed hunting dogs. After relocating to the United States, Osthaus headed a fine arts academy but devoted himself to his paintings full time after it closed.
