KURT ØSTERVIG (Denmark, 1912-1986). Very rare two-seater sofa with solid oak frame, sloping conical back legs extending to tapered armrests, conical front legs. Later professionally reupholstered with blue striped wool cover with piped edges, backrest upholstered in matching plain blue wool. Ca. 1954-55. Measurements: 75 x 154 x 68 cm. A matching armchair of the same design was exhibited at the 1954 Fredericia Furniture Exposition. Kurt Østervig was originally trained as a shipbuilder at the Odense Shipyard, but Østervig's fondness for furniture and wood led to a career change as a furniture designer at E. Knudsen's design studio. In 1947, Østervig established his own design studio which collaborated with several of the very large furniture factories in Scandinavia at the time. His distinctive designs attracted wide international interest, resulting in his work being exhibited at New York's Museum of Modern Art. He also designed a number of furniture for various hotels, hospitals, cinemas and the Maersk ships.

MOBLER MID-CENTURY MODERN TEAKWOOD TWO-PIECE CREDENZA / SIDEBOARD, the lower sideboard component's case divided into thirds with the proper left section containing four graduated drawers while the other two sections have sliding doors concealing open interiors with adjustable shelves; the upper "china cabinet" section with two halves each having sliding glass doors and adjustable shelving of their own, raised via two solid upstands to sit freely atop the lower section. Each piece retaining an old (probably original) surface with bold, warm color. Underside of lower piece's frame stamped with "MADE IN DENMARK / K.P. mobler / DESIGNED BY KURT OSTERVIG". Mid 20th century. 82 3/4" L x 22" W x 31 3/4" H (lower section only); 65 1/4" HOA (fully assembled). Catalogue Note: This impressive credenza is one of the numerous possible combinations of pieces offered by this firm in the modular spirit of Danish mid-century design philosophy. A Mobler sales catalog of the era boasts that the top china cabinets "are available in 3 sizes, which makes it possible to use a top cabinet on most of our sideboards. The top cabinet can be placed directly on top of the sideboards or raised 12" above the sideboards by a couple of teak upstands." This combination appears to be a No. 115 Topcabinet (with the corresponding set of supports) paired with a No. 119 sideboard.

Danish furniture designer Kurt Østervig (1912-1986) began his career as a naval architect in Odense, Denmark before changing career paths in favor of design, quickly becoming one of Scandinavia's leading modern furniture designers of the mid-20th century. Designed by Ostervig and well-crafted by VAMO Sonderborg in sturdy oak, Ostervig's material of choice, stained in a warm finish, this handsome sideboard features three swing-open doors with slat grooved fronts. The central cabinet features an open compartment above two pull-out drawers lined in green felt, flanked by two cabinets each with internal shelving, providing ample, organized storage. Upholstered armchair with matching stool with teak legs and white wool upholstery. Danish industrial designer Kurt Østervig trained as a naval engineer at the Odense shipyard, and was soon employed as a furniture designer by one of the most prominent Danish firms of the 1930s and 1940s, the E. Knudsen studio. In 1947 he set up independently, establishing his own studio. Throughout his career Østervig created all kinds of furniture in the modern style, working for leading Scandinavian furniture firms. His constant search for new challenges resulted in many original design solutions for specialised furniture for nursing homes, boats, hotels and cinemas. His favourite material was always oak, especially in combination with leather. He was especially known for his drawings, which were of unusual perfection and detail, more akin to works of art or coloured photographs than working drawings. The Danish industrial designer Kurt Østervig trained as a naval engineer at the Odense shipyard, and was soon employed as a furniture designer by one of the most prominent Danish firms of the 1930s and 1940s, the E. Knudsen studio. In 1947 he set up independently, establishing his own studio. Throughout his career Østervig created all kinds of furniture in the modern style, working for the leading Scandinavian furniture firms. His constant search for new challenges resulted in many original design solutions for specialised furniture for nursing homes, boats, hotels and cinemas.
