In his late teems, he was introduced to pottery by Isolde Rest, sparking a life-long passion and career in the ceramic arts. Ostermann was known for his maiolica pottery and knowledge of the field. He wrote three well-received books, The Ceramic Surface, The New Maiolica: Contemporary Approaches to Color and Technique and The Ceramic Narrative; and countless magazine articles about ceramics. At the peak of his career he lectured and exhibited throughout the world. His pottery is in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Musee National des Beaux-Arts du Quebec, the Royal Ontario Museum and many private collections. Ostermann's final exhibition, Boats of Passage, was held in 2008 at Prime Gallery in Ontario. Ostermann passed away in 2009.
