Alfonso Ossorio Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1960 - d. 1990

Alfonso Angel Yangco Ossorio (August 2, 1916 – December 5, 1990) was a Filipino American abstract expressionist artist who was born in Manila in 1916 to wealthy Filipino parents from the province of Negros Occidental. His heritage was Hispanic, Filipino, and Chinese. Between the ages of eight and thirteen, he attended school in England. At age fourteen, he moved to the United States. Ossorio attended Portsmouth Priory (now Portsmouth Abbey School) in Rhode Island, graduating in 1934. From 1934 to 1938, he studied fine art at Harvard University and then continued his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design. He became an American citizen in 1933 and served as a medical illustrator in the United States Army during World War II.

Ossorio's early work was surrealist. He was an admirer and early collector of the paintings of Jackson Pollock who counted him as a good friend, and whose works influenced and were influenced by Ossorio. In the early 1950s, Ossorio was pouring oil and enamel paints onto canvas in the style of the first abstract expressionist movement in the US.

In 1950, he was commissioned by the parish of St. Joseph in Victorias City, Negros Occidental in the Philippines to do a mural which would be known as "The Angry Christ" to complete the reconstruction of the church built by the Czech architect Antonín Raymond. Ossorio had this to say in a 1968 interview. "(The Angry Christ) is a continual last judgment with the sacrifice of the mass that is the continual reincarnation of God coming into this world. And it worked out beautifully because the services take place usually very early because of the heat and the church had been oriented so that the sun would come in and strike the celebrant as he stood at the altar with this enormous figure behind him. It worked, if I do say so myself. And although they loathed it at the time it was done it is almost now a place of pilgrimage."

Ossorio traveled to Paris to meet Jean Dubuffet in 1950. Dubuffet's interest in art brut opened up new vistas for Ossorio, who found release from society's preconceptions in the unstudied creativity of insane asylum inmates and children. On the advice of Pollock, Ossorio purchased an expansive 60-acre (240,000 m2) estate, "The Creeks", in East Hampton in 1951, and lived there for more than forty years. He arranged to house and display Dubuffet's art brut collection there. In the 1950s, Ossorio began to create works resembling Dubuffet's assemblages. He affixed shells, bones, driftwood, nails, dolls' eyes, cabinet knobs, dice, costume jewelry, mirror shards, and children's toys to the panel surface. Ossorio called these assemblages congregations, with the term's obvious religious connotation.

Ossorio was represented alongside Dubuffet and nearly 140 other artists in the Museum of Modern Art's 1961 exhibition The Art of Assemblage, which introduced the practice to a broad public.

Ossorio died in New York City in 1990. Half his ashes were scattered at his grand estate The Creeks and the other half came to rest nine years later at Green River Cemetery alongside the remains of many other famous artists, writers and critics.[1] After his death, his partner Edward "Ted" Dragon arranged for the sale of The Creeks,[2] eventually selling it to Ronald Perelman complete with many of Ossorio's brightly colored found art sculptures placed in among the groves of exotic evergreens that Ossorio had carefully planted in his final 20 years of life. Outside of The Creeks, Harvard Art Museum (Massachusetts), the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Housatonic Museum of Art (Bridgeport, Connecticut) and the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, D.C.) are among the public collections holding work by Alfonso A. Ossorio.

    Alfonso Ossorio (1916 - 1990) - Sun Hanging

    Est: ₱2,400,000 - ₱3,120,000

Alfonso Ossorio (1916 - 1990) Sun Hanging signed and dated 1961 (verso) mixed media 28" x 9 1/2" (71 cm x 24 cm)   Provenance: Galerie Stadler Ossorio's Glorious Congregation by Lisa Guerrero Nakpil   For Ossorio, the choice of the word “congregations” had religious resonance, his wild, weird and wonderful aggrupations were intended to be like a flock of the faithful, bound together in a single act of worship. In many ways, they were the sum total of his experiences as an artist, dating from his early years exploring primitive art at Harvard, his exposure to Celtic iconography, to the Filipino folk references in his St. Joseph the Worker murals, and to the experimentalist perspectives of Abstract Expressionism; even to his interactions with the mosaic tables created by Lee Krasner, Pollock’s widow, would figure into these works. For him,“congregations” were the three-dimensional progression of his earlier works. “There was no way of stirring things up enough by doing it with traditional means,” exclaimed Ossorio to one interviewer.   This series returned Ossorio to his surrealist roots (although Ossorio would refuse to be pigeonholed by that term), utilizing a variety of “sought” objects (versus “found”).   His other term for these obsessive treatments were “horror vacui” (the fear of empty spaces), filling like his good friend Pollock the “canvases” end to end, tampering with traditional vanishing points, breaking all the rules, and building them up again. He sought new materials and new effects. It was to become the style Ossorio for which would be best known (at least to a new generation of critics and collectors.   Wrote the New York Times reviewing a show at Cordier & Ekstrom in 1967. “You would hardly think that Mr. Ossorio could have found the time, since his last show, to stick together the thousands of glass eyes, beads, mirrors, animal horns, shells and unidentifiable objects that make up his spectacular assemblages. But here is another big show in his devilishly gaudy manner. He seems more than ever to be creating decorations and votive objects for an expensive and high-spirited pagan ritual — to be performed, of course, in the best company.”   _______ Like his father before him, Ossorio would be shipped off to various English boarding schools, before going to the United States, where his father had taken up permanent residence. He would be enrolled in the exclusive Portsmouth Priory, a Benedictine abbey, on Rhode Island. (Ossorio’s graduation from there would be mentioned in the same breath in the society pages alongside a lunch tendered by Mr and Mrs W.H. Vanderbilt on their yacht.)   In 1934, Alfonso entered the hallowed halls of Harvard University, emerging in 1938. He would take up residence a few years later in a ranch in New Mexico. There he would meet the gallerist Betty Parsons, also vacationing in the desert sands, a divorcee whose family had lost their fortune and is said to have hocked her engagement ring to bankroll her artistic career. Parsons would invite Ossorio to join her roster of artists, which eventually included Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, as well as the then-equally unknown Jackson Pollock, who would become a great friend and ally in the Abstract Expressionist movement.

Alfonso Ossorio and Jackson Pollock met in 1949, and since then it has been impossible to understand the artistic trajectory of one of the greatest mid to late twentieth-century artists, not to mention one of the most highly prized in our current market, without considering Ossorio. Ossorio supported Pollock economically, emotionally, and in various personal ways. He welcomed Pollock frequently to his celebrated house The Creeks, which housed a magnificent art collection and his studio that he had acquired in August 1951 at Pollock’s behest. Moreover, Ossorio contributed, at least in part, to the development of Pollock’s artistic practice. Of course, the reverse also is true, and we find evidence of Pollock’s influence in Ossorio’s work. Yet, particularly in the latter years of Pollock’s career, Ossorio, the artist, would play a role in Pollock’s creative practices, as he turned once more toward some form of figurative representation. Among the sources that provide evidence for the connections between these two artists is the voluminous biography by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith, Jackson Pollock: An American Saga (Clarkson N. Potter, New York,1989; Pulitzer Prize, 1991). It allows us to appreciate their attachment to each other and confirms some things we already knew; namely, that Alfonso Ossorio not only financed Pollock’s artistic and personal projects but also became a close personal friend The Pollocks spent periods of time as Ossorio’s guests in his home (in the winter of 1950, for example, when Ossorio traveled to the Philippines). We know as well that on November 27, 1950, the eve of opening day at the Betty Parsons Gallery, Ossorio helped Pollock to present canvases onto supporting frames and hang paintings on the walls. At this event, too, he purchased the magnificent painting “Number 1” for $1,500. In addition, Ossorio penned an essay titled “Mon ami, Jackson Pollock” (Jackson Pollock, Betty Parsons Gallery, New York, 1951, reprinted in French, “Mon ami Jackson Pollock,” exhibit catalogue, Studio Paul Facchetti, Paris, March 7 – 31, 1952); he arranged for Pollock to exhibit in Paris in 1952; he even offered him a $200 monthly stipend to help him meet his needs. (A reproduction of the letter appears here; the original resides in the Smithsonian Institution.) Jackson Pollock died as a result of an automobile accident at 10:15 p.m. on August 11, 1956. He had been driving with two female friends en route to the home of his dear friend and patron Alfonso Ossorio. Several recent events have finally accorded Alfonso Ossorio, an artist with deep Filipino roots, his rightful place among the world’s giants of artistic expressionism. His work was featured in the exhibit “Angels, Demons, and Savages. Pollock, Ossorio, Dubuffet” (Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., February 9 – May 12, 2013), and it appeared alongside Pollock’s work in the Whitney Museum of New York (“America is hard to see,” inaugural exhibit of the new Whitney Museum of American Art, May 1 – September 27, 2015).In 2016, Leon Gallery (Makati City, Philippines) celebrated the one-hundredth anniversary of Ossorio’s birth with two exhibits devoted to his paintings. Alfonso Ossorio, born in Manila on August 2, 1916, has earned a unique and fundamental place in the history of art

Alfonso Ossorio (Filipino/American, 1916-1990) Untitled, Signed Ossorio twice on back, Found Objects in a Congregration/Assemblage with Oil, Overall-38" x 42 1/2" Note: In 1958, Alfonso Ossorio (1916-1990) began to experiment, incorporating found objects into his oil paintings. He initially introduced these items discreetly, but by 1959, buttons, shards, mirrors, fake gems, ropes and other miscellaneous objects often covered his surfaces. Oil had been replaced by plastic as the primary matrix, and soon after, painting was rejected for gathering. While artists like friend Jean Dubuffet often refer to their low-relief composites as assemblages, Ossorio coined the term "congregation," a word with obvious ecclesiastical associations and that resonated with the artist's lifelong engagement with Catholicism. While "assemblage" emphasizes the cohesiveness of a group of elements, "congregation" conveys the multiplicity of unique entities within the work as a whole. Such a shift in focus complements Ossorio's own understanding of religion: "Religion must aim to inspire awe, to awe man with the splendor of his existence. By a set of unexpected juxtapositions, it must put you in a state of realization of how splendid things can be, even if they are horrible." In his congregations, Ossorio created the unexpected by synthesizing forms of beauty with those of decay, by contrasting refinement with crudeness. For Ossorio, all objects had life, and bringing together disparate, ordinary elements, he also found a way to fuse art and spirituality. Ossorio continued to create daring congregations until his death in 1990.

PROPERTY FROM THE OSSORIO FAMILY COLLECTION Untitled signed and dated 9.II.57 (verso) oil, enamel, and plaster on masonite 96” x 24” (244 cm x 61 cm) WRITE UP Alfonso Ossorio was born into affluence and prosperity. Following in his father’s footsteps, Ossorio was sent to various prestigious English boarding schools during his childhood, laying the foundation for his cosmopolitan education. Eventually, he journeyed to the United States, where his father had established permanent residence. Ossorio’s formal education continued at Portsmouth Priory, a Benedictine abbey located in Rhode Island, where he distinguished himself academically. His graduation even graced the society pages, highlighted by a lunch hosted by the illustrious Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Vanderbilt aboard their yacht—a testament to the high social circles he moved in. In 1934, Ossorio entered Harvard University, where he immersed himself in the study of fine arts, graduating in 1938. His time at Harvard exposed him to various artistic philosophies and techniques, shaping his early artistic inclinations. A few years later, Ossorio relocated to a ranch in the vast and rugged landscape of New Mexico. It was here, in the serene yet stark desert environment, that he encountered Betty Parsons, a gallerist whose own life had been marked by significant change—she had lost her family fortune and had even pawned her engagement ring to support her burgeoning art career. Parsons, recognizing Ossorio’s potential, invited him to join her roster of emerging artists. This group would come to include some of the most significant figures of the Abstract Expressionist movement, such as Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, and the then-unknown Jackson Pollock. Ossorio and Pollock forged a deep friendship and artistic alliance, with Pollock’s influence becoming evident in Ossorio’s work. In the late 1950s, Alfonso Ossorio created five large panels using oil and mixed media, each one a deeply personal gift to individuals who were exceptionally close to him. This period was pivotal in Ossorio’s artistic journey, as he had solidified friendships with some of the most influential artists of the time, including Jackson Pollock, Hans Hofmann, Willem de Kooning, Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko, David Smith, and the French artist Jean Dubuffet. These relationships significantly impacted Ossorio’s work, infusing it with the raw energy and experimental spirit of Abstract Expressionism. This particular piece echoes both the style and philosophy of this significant phase in Ossorio’s career and shares stylistic similarities with his other large-scale works. The dynamic, almost chaotic interplay of black, white, and hints of color in this work echoes the influence of Pollock’s action painting, yet it also bears Ossorio’s unique signature of combining abstraction with deeply personal, symbolic content. This artwork not only reflects Ossorio’s close connections within the art world but also stands as a testament to his own innovative contributions to mid-20th-century art.

ALFONSO OSSORIO Quem Quaeritis. Etching and aquatint on white wove paper, 1984. 600x451 mm; 23¾x18 inches, full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 14/35 in pencil, lower margin. Printed and published by Hudson River Editions, New York, with the blind stamp lower right recto. A very good, dark and well-inked impression. The scion of a Philippine sugar magnate, Ossorio (1916-1990) was one of the early practitioners of Abstract Expressionism, and in the 1950s he formed important artistic friendships with Jackson Pollock and Jean Dubuffet. These artists showed Ossorio the value of looking inward for inspiration, and his surrealistic imagery began to evolve into more abstract, outwardly expressionistic work. From 1934 to 1938, Ossorio studied fine art at Harvard University and then continued his practice at the Rhode Island School of Design. He became an American citizen in 1933 and served as a medical illustrator in the United States Army during World War II. Circling back to his Catholic-Filipino roots, Ossorio painted a mural, known as The Angry Christ, in 1950 for the parish of St. Joseph in Victorias City, Negros Occidental in the Philippines. Soon after, in the early 1950s, he was pouring oil and enamel paints onto canvas--à la Pollock--in the style of the first abstract expressionists in the US. Later in his career, he returned to religious themes, including the current work, from a series of etchings he created based on Quem Quaeritis, which refers to four lines of the medieval Easter liturgy that later formed the core of the large body of medieval liturgical drama. The Quem Quaeritis (or, "Whom do you seek?") was an exchange of one question, one answer, and one command between the Angels at Christ's tomb and the three Marys, the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the sister of Lazarus.

Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, New York, Alfonso Ossorio Retrospective. Alfonso Ossorio was at the centre of the Abstract Expressionist and Art Brut movements which flourished during the 1950s. This passion for the arts and exploration of abstraction, alongside his close friends Jackson Pollock and Jean Dubuffet, was reflected in not only his own practice but also his collecting habits. Financially supported by his family, Ossorio established one of the earliest collections of Art Brut and Abstract Expressionism, helping to consolidate and promote the movements in America. Ossorio's family made their wealth through the sugar-refining industries in Negros Occidental in the Philippines. Ossorio was educated in England before relocating to Rhode Island at the age of 14. Ossorio studied Fine Art at Harvard University and held his first solo exhibition in New York with Betty Parsons in 1941. Ossorio's interest in art reached further than just practice, he was a keen collector and whilst studying at Harvard the Fogg Museum exhibited his early collection of works including pieces by Eric Gill and David Jones. Whilst exhibiting with Betty Parsons throughout the 40s, Ossorio became aware of Jackson Pollock's work, another artist Parsons was supporting and he was immediately drawn to his unique talent. Ossorio purchased his first Pollock 'drip' painting in 1949 titled Number 5, 1948. From this moment forward a strong friendship ensued between Ossorio and Pollock, both as artists but also as patron and artist. 'Europe no longer had anything to offer but a mixture of memories.' Harold Rosenberg, The De-Definition of Art (New York: Collier, 1972). P. 194 In November 1949, Pollock encouraged Ossorio to travel to Paris to meet with his friend Jean Dubuffet. At the time Dubuffet had experienced a great deal of criticism in Europe for his highly textured Art Brut works but his reputation was growing across the pond. Ossorio returned to New York with three new purchases Robinson, Figure au site Champetre and La dame au pompom and most importantly a new friendship which would continue in perpetuity. By 1951 Dubuffet was arguably the most famous French artist in America, possibly with the help of Ossorio. Together with Ossorio's lifelong partner, Ted Dragon, he purchased an estate on Long Island called The Creeks. The estate became synonymous with lavish parties attended by some of the most important artists of the 20th century Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning and Lee Krasner. The Creeks, arguably helped to develop the strength of abstract expressionism in America. In 1952, Dubuffet's The Art Brut Collection which included 1200 works by approximately 100 artists was installed at Ossorio's estate. The collection hung on the upper floors of The Creeks alongside Ossorio's personal collection of works by Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, Lee Krasner and Willem de Kooning. In 1962 the collection returned to Paris to a purpose made space organised by Dubuffet and from 1976 the collection was moved to Lausanne in Switzerland in the Collection de l'Art Brut, where it remains today. Lot 161 represents Alfonso Ossorio's exploration of surrealism, characterised as metaphysical fantasies, featured emotionally charged expressionistic brushstrokes. Influenced by his return to the Philippines in 1949, to carry out a mural commission for the chapel of St. Joseph the Worker in his hometown Victorias, he introduced the 'wax-resist' technique, inspired by Victor Brauner, giving rise to the Victorias Paintings series. This collection delved into the complexities of Catholicism, homosexuality, and racism. His early pieces depicted the emotional turmoil of a young homosexual male with a deeply rooted Catholic upbringing, set against the backdrop of World War II. These emotions were vividly portrayed through highly detailed surrealist designs. Additionally, Ossorio's art drew inspiration from psychoanalyst Nandor Fodor's writings on sexuality, birth, and motherhood. The present lot reflects the work of Jackson Pollock, most notably a piece titled Pattern c. 1945 held in the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.'These works stand out for their vivid, saturated colors, distinctive formal characteristics, and pulsating energy.' Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, New York, Alfonso Ossorio Retrospective. Arguably, Ossorio's collecting habits and socialite lifestyle have overshadowed his artistic capabilities. A turning point came in 2013 with the exhibition Angels,Demons and Savages: Pollock, Ossorio, Dubuffet curated by Dorothy Konsinski and Klauss Ottman at the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. before travelling to New York. This exhibition placed Ossorio in the centre of Pollock and Dubuffet shining a light on the importance of his career as both an artist and collector.

PROPERTY FORMERLY IN THE FERNANDO ZOBEL COLLECTION #12 '67 ("Arimula") 1967 signed (lower right), dated and dedicated "For Fernando Zobel" (verso) mixed media 25" x 13" (64 cm x 33 cm) PROVENANCE: A gift from the artist to Fernando Zobel EXHIBITED: Cordier & Ekstrom, 978 Madison Avenue, New York, March 1967 WRITE UP: Ossorio to Zobel : A Gift Exchanged Between Patrician Artists For Ossorio, the choice of the word “congregations” had religious resonance, his wild, weird and wonderful aggrupations were intended to be like a flock of the faithful, bound together in a single act of worship. In many ways, they were the sum total of his experiences as an artist, dating from his early years exploring primitive art at Harvard, his exposure to Celtic iconography, to the Filipino folk references in his St. Joseph the Worker murals, and to the experimentalist perspectives of Abstract Expressionism; even to his interactions with the mosaic tables create by Lee Krasner, Pollock’s widow, would figure into these works. For him,“congregations” were the three-dimensional progression of his earlier works. “There was no way of stirring things up enough by doing it with traditional means,” exclaimed Ossorio to one interviewer. This series returned Ossorio to his surrealist roots (although Ossorio would refuse to be be pigeonholed by that term), utilizing a variety of are objects (versus “found”). 12'67 (Arimula) his “Congregations” in full bloom as the works he showed in 1961, when he participated in the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibit, “The Art of Assemblage.” His other term for these obsessive treatments were “horror vacui” (the fear of empty spaces), filling like his good friend Pollock the “canvases” end to end, tampering with traditional vanishing points, breaking all the rules, and building them up again. He sought new materials and new effects. It was to become the style Ossorio for which would be best known (at least to a new generation of critics and collectors. _______ Ossorio was born in Manila, on August 2, 1916, to a background as patrician as that of Fernando Zobel y Montojo, if not more so — if that were at all possible. Ossorio would be shipped off to various English boarding schools, before going to the United States, where his father had taken up permanent residence. It would not at all be surprising that the paths of these worldly, artistic scions would cross. 12'67 Arimula (following Pollock’s penchant for coded numbers) would be testament to common horizons. Interestingly, there is a handle of a blackened silver spoon in this particular assemblage, possible a witty jibe at his fellow aristocrat for which this work was handpicked as a gift. Wrote the New York Times reviewing this very show where the work at hand appeared at Cordier & Ekstrom in 1967.“You would hardly think that Mr. Ossorio could have found the time, since his last show, to stick together the thousands of glass eyes, beads, mirrors, animal horns, shells and unidentifiable objects that make up his spectacular assemblages. But here is another big show in his devilishly gaudy manner. He seems more than ever to be creating decorations and votive objects for an expensive and highspirited pagan ritual — to be performed, of course, in the best company.” (Lisa Guerrero Nakpil)

Alfonso Ossorio (1916 - 1990) Assemblage signed and dated 1967 mixed media H: 4" x L: 1" x L: 5" (10 cm x 2.5 cm x 13 cm) Transitioning into the 1950s, Ossorio underwent a shift from his Surrealist inclinations to an approach aligned with Abstract Expressionism. This phase saw him experimenting with various paint mediums, such as oil and enamel, to achieve his desired visual effects. Ossorio's compositions during this period bore vigorous, assertive brushstrokes, distinguishing them from Pollock's more spontaneous creations. Notably, Ossorio's work retained an underlying thread of cohesion amid its chaotic demeanor, a harmonious familiarity amidst the abstract. In contrast to Pollock's dynamic, immediate pieces, Ossorio's abstractions embodied a calculated and nuanced disposition. A striking embodiment of Ossorio's artistic evolution is evident in his 1967 creation. This piece signifies his departure from pure Abstract Expressionism to his later style, referred to by the artist as "Congregations." This later approach incorporated assemblages of diverse objects within the artworks, striving to portray the intricate world's uniqueness and complexity. The watercolor work under scrutiny amalgamates elements from both of Ossorio's artistic periods. Its powerful, audacious brushwork pays homage to his earlier Abstract Expressionist influences, while the assortment of diverse elements mirrors the object-oriented essence of his "Congregations. Across his varied styles, Ossorio's intricate and multifaceted piece reveals a deep-seated artistic philosophy that embraces complexity and nuance. (Jed Daya)

Tree signed with artist’s monogram and dated 9.10.1940. (lower left) ink and graphite on paper 20 1/8" x 13" (51 cm x 33 cm) PROVENANCE Richard Castellane Gallery EXHIBITED Wakefield Gallery, Alfonso Ossorio: First One-Man Show, Manhattan, 1941 This early drawing of Alfonso Ossorio (then aged 24) is a rare testimony of his extraordinary talent, more than ten years before he was to make his way into Abstract Expressionism, interacting with Dubuffet and Pollock. At the time, Ossorio had graduated with a Bachelor of Arts at Harvard before enrolling at the Rhode Island School of Design and producing his first commissioned artwork for the altar of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Manhattan. He had just married Bridget Hubrecht in early 1940 (a marriage that would barely last a year). They both left for a ranch in Taos, New Mexico, where he had leisure to produce exquisite works. There, Ossorio was discovered by a visitor, Betty Parsons, who let the former exhibit his works at her gallery in Manhattan in 1941. This drawing was among those showcased in the above-stated 1941 show. Representing a corn field in a tormented sky, it is a meditation over life (the healthy corn popping out of the stems) and death (the promised decay of the plant giving birth). This theme obviously persecuted the newlywed Ossorio as it will for the rest of his career, as can be observed in many of the tragic paintings of the “Victorias Group.” A work from the same exhibition was included in Leon Gallery’s monumental show Alfonso Ossorio: Grazing Light in April 2017. Years later, the work at hand would be exhibited at Castellane Gallery.

A very good impression of this extremely scarce, early print. The scion of a Philippine sugar magnate, Ossorio (1916-1990) was one of the early practitioners of Abstract Expressionism, and in the 1950s he formed important artistic friendships with Jackson Pollock and Jean Dubuffet. They showed Ossorio the value of looking inward for inspiration, and his surrealistic imagery began to evolve into more abstract, outwardly expressionistic work.
