      A SILVERED METAL OKIMONO OF A KINGFISHER ON A LOTUS LEAF, ATTRIBUTED TO OSHIMA JOUN, 1858-1940 Attributed to Oshima Joun, signed Joun Japan, early 20th century, Meiji (1868-1912) to Taisho period (1912-1926) Naturalistically cast in two parts with a kingfisher perched on the stem of an upturned lotus leaf. The underside of one claw incised KYUU, the leaf incised to the side JOUN and with a silver hallmark to the underside. HEIGHT 20 cm WEIGHT 860 g Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, small nicks, and few light surface scratches Oshima Joun (1858-1940) was a professor at Tokyo School of Art from 1887 until 1932 and is regarded as one of the most celebrated bronze-casters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He exhibited at several of the great international expositions of the era, including Paris (1900), St. Louis (1904) and London (1910).       OSHIMA JOUN: A SUPERB BRONZE OF BISHAMONTEN SUBDUING AN ONI By Oshima Joun (1858-1940), signed Ichijoken Joun with kakihan Japan, c. 1900, Meiji period (1868-1912) Heavily cast in three segments, with Bishamonten (Vaisravana) standing atop a subdued demon above a rocky base, his body in a dynamic pose bending over the demon, a long trident in his hands, dressed in an elaborate armor incised with scrolling clouds, birds, and diaper patterns, and with a sash framing his body. The scene supported on a tiered rectangular base with floral scrolls and key-fret bands, standing on four beast-mask feet. HEIGHT 38.5 cm WEIGHT 10.28 kg Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few small nicks, light surface scratches, minor warping to the trident, minor surface encrustations, a segment of the element in the oni’s hand lost. Provenance: Estate of Nadean McArthur (1936-2022), Clyde, North Carolina. Bishamonten, the god of war and warriors, is the most powerful of the four guardian kings (Shitenno) corresponding with the four cardinal directions. The guardian of the north, Bishamonten also known as Tamonten, is derived from the Hindu god Kuvera (Kubera), who is a god of wealth. His trident represents the three jewels: the Buddha, the dharma, and the singha (community). The scene depicted here involves Bishamonten, one of the Four Kings of Heaven, who guard against attacks by demons (oni). Here a demon has stolen the stupa (a reliquary symbolizing Buddhist law) that Bishamonten usually carries in his left hand. Oshima Joun (1858-1940) was a professor at Tokyo School of Art from 1887 until 1932 and is regarded as one of the most celebrated bronze-casters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He exhibited at several of the great international expositions of the era, including Paris (1900), St. Louis (1904) and London (1910). Signed to the back ICHIJOKEN JOUN saku [made by Ichijoken Joun] and sealed to the recessed base Taishodo sei. Accompanied by the original silk Shifuku. HEIGHT 21.6 cm WEIGHT 958 g Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and few typical casting irregularities. With an inscribed and sealed wood tomobako storage box. Oshima Joun (1858-1940), also known as Yasutaro, was a highly skilled artist renowned for his expertise in bronze casting. He hailed from a family of metalworkers and began his career in the family business in 1877. It was during this year that he adopted the art name Joun. By 1879, he had expanded the family business significantly, employing 11 craftsmen in his Tokyo studio. In 1881, Oshima Joun exhibited his work at the 2nd National Industrial Exposition, marking the beginning of his illustrious career. He gained international recognition by showcasing his art at prestigious events such as the Paris Exposition in 1900 and the London Japan-British Exposition in 1910.

Early 20th century.Oshima Joun (Oshima Yasutarô, 1858 – 1940) was a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Art from 1887 until 1932, and was famous for his great skill in bronze casting. Born into a family of metalworkers, Joun succeeded to the family business in 1877 and the same year adopted the art name “Joun”. By 1879, he had built up the business to the point that he had eleven assistants working in his studio. Much of his work from this period was sold through high-level commissioning houses such as Honda, Sanseisha, and Murakami Heishichi. He exhibited at the 2nd National Industrial Exposition in 1881 and international venues such as the Paris Exposition in 1900 and the London Japan-British Exposition in 1910.

      By Oshima Joun (1858-1940), Meiji Period Constructed in three separate sections, the figures comprising two fabulous sea-creatures of almost human form, standing on a base of rocks on spumy waves, both naked, save for their mugwort skirts, applied with assorted seashells in relief, one creature wearing an elaborate headdress in the form of a winged fish, holding a portable figure of Amida Nyorai, his companion with his arms outstretched (vessel missing), all set on a rectangular plinth with corner brackets in the form of a pair of dragons with a tama, in turn resting on an inswept base supported by four mask feet, the underside signed with seal Ichijoken Joun with Kao.
