    Attributed to José Benito Ortega (1858 - 1941) Jesus Nazareno ca. 1870-1900 wood, gesso, pigment 38 1/2 x 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. Jesus of Nazareth. Large hand-carved figure with articulated shoulders and flexible elbows. Body is carved, prepared with gesso and painted with native pigments. Strongly carved facial features, carved hair near neck, crown of thorns rests on his head. Articulated arms are attached with rope through holes in upper body and elbows are attached to forearms with cloth welds, well carved pectorals, hands and feet. The loincloth is formed of gessoed cloth and painted blue and yellow. The figure is held in place with four wooden supports attached to wooden base. The figure was used extensively in processions and much wear is noted as well as additional painted areas through decades: blood trails, stigmata.

Hand-carved figure with pigment over gesso. Figure suspended from cross with wooden pegs through palms and feet. Cristo’s head is tilted, crescent eyes cast down, delineated carved ribs, narrow waist and long legs. Crescent eyes and eyebrows are outlined with tiny dots. The blood trails fall from his brow, arms, heart, thighs, and knees. His loincloth has a painted circular motif.

Large Cristo figure, carved wood with painted pigment over gesso. Deep carved eye sockets with large crescent eyes cast downward, with lower lashes painted and dots around eyebrows, short dark beard. Gesso covered fabric loincloth and monochromatic pigment over fabric for skirt. Well-delineated rib cage with bloody chest wound and knees, blood trails along arms, neck, legs and brow. A small woven crown sits atop head. Christ is nail to a dark cross with red, yellow and white painted terminals and INRJ plaque at top.
