Orsi, a prolific poster artist—his published works number more than a thousand—symbolizes the 8th Olympics with a view of a javelin thrower about to hurl his ancient weapon out over a panorama of Paris; a globe is included to suggest the international scope of the event. ORSI (1889-1947). LAMPE FLUORESCENTE / PHILIPS. Circa 1940. 61½x45 inches, 156½x114¼ cm. Bedos & Cie, Paris.

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

ORSI (1889-1947) LAMPE FLUORESCENTE / PHILIPS. Circa 1940. 61 1/2x45 inches, 156 1/2x114 1/4 cm. Bedos & Cie, Paris. Condition A: minor creases in margins. Framed. The expansive Bénézit Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs, writes of Orsi that "his name should have an important place in the history of posters on behalf of his innovative aesthetics." Bénézit goes on to praise Orsi's sense of simplification, his bright colors and his creative ideas, and further estimates that Orsi designed as many as 1,000 posters. Despite this prodigious output, nothing else has been written on the artist and no portrait of him exists. Philips was one of his primary clients. Here, the Pointillist effect he creates to advertise a fluorescent light bulb is a classic example of the extent of his talent. The diagonal of the bulb itself, the unique handling of the coloring, the typography and the overall feeling of fluorescence make this an exceptional image.

    Folies-Bergère/Dorville.

    Est: $1,200 - $1,500

Orsi teams up with another actor taking potshots at an established classic in this poster for Dorville's turn as a besotted, baying Caesar at the Folies-Bergère. Dorville (born Georges-Henri Dodane, 1883-1940) was a French character actor active primarily during the 1930s. He is best-remembered for his critically-lauded work as Sancho Panza in 1933's Don Quichotte, the French version of G. W. Pabst's monumental three-language adaptation (English, French and German, filmed in three separate versions) of Cervantes' classic novel.

  • Casino de Paris/Nina Myral.
    May. 03, 2009

    Casino de Paris/Nina Myral.

    Est: $1,200 - $1,500

Around 1880, the enormous skating rink that ran from 15 rue Blanche to 16 rue Clichy was transformed into the famous dance hall-cum theater known as the Casino de Paris. Running around the entire hall was a grand balcony where the dance orchestra played until 10 PM; then entertainment took over the stage: dancers, singers, musicians, magicians, declaimers, balancing troupes and animal acts, every sort of artiste imaginable. Character actress Nina Myral (1884-1975) has no shortage of film credits to her name, but very little in the way of biographical information. This Orsi poster for an appearance of hers at the Casino de Paris, however, let's us know straight-up that she finds both American taste and classical romance to be a complete pain in the neck. As humorous a design as it is obvious. The posterist known only as Orsi produced hundreds of posters, many of them for the theater, and all with strong, eye-catching designs.

  • Thérèse Dorny.
    May. 03, 2009

    Thérèse Dorny.

    Est: $1,400 - $1,700

Thérèse Dorny (1891-1976) was a fixture of French stage and cinema scene from 1930 through 1954, a character actress broadly remembered for her work in "Diabolique." From the poster's that have come our way featuring Dorny, a disheveled, on-the-fringe character begins to take shape, a persona whose best times may well be behind her. But compared to de Segonzac's poster for the actress (see PAI-XLV, 489), which has Dorny precariously-set and a bit tattered, this Orsi design is imbued with a certain daft exuberance, a colorful screwy-and-loving-it quality that calls the most-memorable work of Carol Burnett to mind.
