During my second year at art school, two friends and I decided to drive to Ireland and paint the local views which we would then sell to the local hotels. The trip was a disaster. The minivan we were sleeping in continually broke down, it poured with rain most of the time (I was working in acrylic). In theory, we were camping but there was no way we could light a fire, so we lived on tins of cold beans, and the hotels we visited were already filled with views by other artists Robert O'Rorke We are grateful to Mr O'Rorke for the assistance in cataloguing this piece

ROBERT O'RORKE (B.1945) By night signed, inscribed and dated 'ROBERT O'RORKE BY NIGHT 1969' (on the canvas overlap) oil on canvas 60 3/4 X 60 in. (154.3 x 152.5 cm.) Provenance: Private collection, UK.  We are grateful to Robert O'Rorke for the assistance in cataloguing this work.  'Back in the sixties many teenagers like John Lennon, Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton and Ronnie Wood initially went from school to art school before finding fame in pop music.  At that time pop music and pop art were both evolving together and while ideas from art schools fed into the world of music, inspiration from rock musicians fed back into the visual arts.  Peter Blake, besides painting many images of pop idols, also designed the famous Sergeant Pepper album cover.  Richard Hamilton likewise made prints of Mick Jagger and Robert Frazer and was commissioned to design the Beetles' white album cover. The stimulus for By Night comes from the last track of The Doors’ first album The End.  Written by Jim Morrison after he split up from his girlfriend, it evolved over a period of time into something darker and more ambiguous.  By Night also evolved over a period of time with a number of preliminary studies and changes. The final image encompasses a background of diagonal yellow and black stripes on the right with a girl’s legs fleeing from something unseen.  On the left an African mask looms out of an area of reddish brown paint. The juxtaposition of the two images and the disparity of the two sides was designed to create a feeling of dislocation and unease similar to the music that inspired the piece.

Robert O'Rorke (British, born 1945) Untitled 1 signed 'ROBERT O'RORKE' (on canvas overlap)acrylic on three canvases81 x 193cm (31 7/8 x 76in). (overall)Painted in 1970 The present work and lot 199 were both painted following the Artist's graduation from the Royal College of Art in 1969, where he had absorbed the influences of British and American pop artists including Hockney, Kitaj and Peter Blake (his tutor at the RCA), as well as Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. Upon graduating O'Rorke moved to a shared studio at St Katharine Docks, a warehouse next to the Tower of London which Bridget Riley and Peter Sedgley had taken a short lease on. Focusing only on form, colour and gestural brushwork, the two lots offered here are an exuberant example of the Artist's work in the early 1970s.

Provenance: Private collection, UK.  ‘As a student my paintings had used multiple images and different visual conventions exploring the whole range of what paint can communicate.   But I found this disparate imagery tended to dictate the forms and colours, so I decided to remove any figurative references and concentrate on trying to make completely abstract paintings.  In the early seventies a number of artists calling themselves Post-painterly abstractionists or colour field painters emerged like John Hoyland, John Golding and Jules Olitski, and for a while the influence of their work fed into mine.  It was in this context that I painted Untitled III in about 1971.’  We are grateful to the artist for the assistance in cataloguing this lot.

(69.5 x 41.7 cm.) Provenance:  Private collection, UK. Upon graduating the Royal College of Art in 1969, O’Rorke rented a large studio in St Katherine’s Docks, a huge warehouse near the Tower of London, which Bridget Riley had taken over on short lease. It was the first artist-run studio in London providing spaces for over hundred artists. ‘After about eighteen months we had to move and some of us went to an old school in Hackney but it was a long way from where I was living and I subsequently found a large warehouse space in Chelsea which was much nearer my house.  I spent three years working there and continued with the large abstract paintings but also did a lot of smaller collages, one of which was Sweet Dreams which I painted in about 1972.  At the time I was still interested in exploring the contrast between figurative imagery and paint used just as paint and the transition between these two conventions.’ We are grateful to the artist for the assistance in cataloguing this lot.
