Bogolyubov, author of numerous works made in Moscow and St. Petersburg for the imperial couple of Alexander III, academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts.Born into a noble family of Little Russian origin. The artist's father was a wealthy Kiev landowner. He received his primary art education at the Second Kiev Gymnasium under I. M. Soshenko. Later he moved to St. Petersburg, entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in the class of A. P. Bogolyubov. While in St. Petersburg, Vladimir Orlovsky got acquainted with the works of many marine painters. He also got acquainted with the works of T. G. Shevchenko. He painted with oil paints even before entering the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1861, where he began to make rapid progress, so that already in 1863 he received a large silver medal from the Academy. During the years of study, he painted sketches in the Crimea, the Kiev province, in Karelia, in the Grand Duchy of Finland and in the Caucasus.1868 - graduated from the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts with the title of class artist of the 1st degree, and for the Crimean views he received a large gold medal (1867) and the right to travel abroad at public expense. For three years (1869-1872) he worked as a "pensioner from the Academy" in Paris, Switzerland, Germany and Italy. For the paintings "Before a squall", "Sunset", "Swamp", "In the steppe", "Fire in the field", "Sowing", "Forest frame", "Sands", which were exhibited at the Academic Exhibition, in 1874 he was awarded the title of academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1878, for the paintings "On the Mowing", "The Pier in Pozzuoli", "Morning on the Shores of the Gulf of Naples" and "On the Sea Before a Thunderstorm", he was approved as a professor of landscape painting, which gave him the right to teach. Subsequently - a member of the Council of the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts.He took part in the activities of the Kiev drawing school of N. I. Murashko, in the organization of the Kiev art school; taught at the Academy of Arts, in particular, with Vladimir Kazantsev, later a well-known Ural landscape painter.A few years after that, he painted on motifs gleaned in Taitsy (Petersburg province) and Gatchina, and finally, in 1885-1890, he painted seascapes, which he had done before.Orlovsky's painting, at first not quite free ("The Village of Kokaz in the Crimea" 1868, was included in the collection of the Academy of Arts) gradually became broader, and the coloring began to be enriched. A good draftsman, Orlovsky placed well-placed and well-placed figures in his paintings. The artist's paintings are very diverse both in nature (from Finland to the Crimea) and in content (cloudy day, winter moonlit night, sunset, autumn flood, etc.). He painted swamps, overgrown ponds, as well as meadows and fields, birch and hornbeam forests, giving them a romanticized look, playing with light; but his specialty is predominantly open views, not the interior of the forest.Orlovsky is more often a good observer of nature than a seeker of poetic moods, although he is not without the latter (for example, "Winter Moonlit Night", which was part of the collection of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich). Its marine views are remarkable for their detailed drawing more than for their color ("Val", 1888, was acquired by Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich).Small works are distinguished by a special immediacy of perception, more like sketches. Here the artist comes close to real nature. And although they still do not have soft open-airness that erases the sharp edges of forms, the author carefully writes out every blade of grass and flower, but the sun, its warm and bright light, unites this world into a single harmonious whole. In this world there is a place for both nature and the objective realities of everyday life, and, of course, for a person who lives and works on earth. Literally two or three, almost miniature strokes, Orlovsky draws figures of women raking hay in the meadow, fishermen in boats, peasant women who feed animals in the yard.He wrote a lot for the aristocracy of Moscow and St. Petersburg, for the royal family, was popular on a par with I.K. Aivazovsky, his work shows the influence of A.I. Kuindzhi. He died in the Italian city of Nervi. He was buried in Kiev, at the Lukyanovsky cemetery.

The present work is probably an oil study of the artist, painted around 1900 for a later work. The view is directed from an elevated position and reveals a river landscape, which reminds of the course of the Dnieper River. Although the painting served as a preparatory sketch, it already demonstrates the artist’s idea of light that rendered his works their unique atmosphere and particular depth. The painting is inscribed on ‘W. Orlovsky.’. It is also stamped in Cyrillic ‘Proizvedenij Prof. Orlovskago’ (painting by prof. Orlovsky). In addition, the backside features a few more handwritten notes. There are light areas of retouching to the sky and to the background. The size of the cardboard is 25.3 x 36.8 cm. The wooden frame shows a few faint marks and measures 36 x 47.6 cm. Wladimir Donatovich Orlovsky (1842-1914) Orlovsky studied at the art academy in St. Petersburg in 1861/67. He specialized in landscape painting and was able to go abroad as a fellow in 1869/72. In 1874, Orlovsky was active as an academic, which resulted in his appointment as a professor in 1878. His works are included in the collections of the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the Museum in Riga.
