          ALEXANDER ORLOWSKI

          Est: £200 - £300

Alexander Orlowski, Fathali Shah Qajar, Lithograph, St. Petersburg, 1819. Hand coloured, with monograph and date. 9.5cm x 15cm Alexander Orlowski was born at Warsaw in 1777 and died at St. Petersburg in 1832. He was born into a well-to-do Polish family; his father had an inn in the small provincial town of Sedlitz. There, the boy met princess Isabella Czartoryskich, who was impressed by the boy’s pictures. She sent Alexander, in 1793, for professional training to the Warsaw studio of Jan Piotr Norblin and M. Boccarelli, the court painter of the princes of Czartoryskichs. The early, Warsaw period, of his artistic activity is marked with an interest for the national liberation movement of the Polish people under the leadership of Thaddeus Kosciuszko. In 1794, Orlowski was a volunteer in a partisan group of Kosciuszko. After the defeat of the liberation movement, Orlowski for some time worked with a troupe of traveling actors. In 1802, he moved to Lithuania, and then came to St. Petersburg, where he lived to the end of his life. Under the patronage of prince Adam Czartoryskich, he was admitted into the service of the Grand Duke Constantin Pavlovich. A talented painter, draftsman and graphic artist, Orlowski created a lot of graphic works, pastels, and watercolours of romantic character. In 1809, he was awarded the title of Academician. Genre watercolours depicting working people and scenes from the life of the high society showed us the life of St. Petersburg of the time. Portraiture takes up a big part of his activities. In 1816, Orlowski, one of the first, tried lithography and published several series of lithographic works, which were appreciated by his contemporaries. After 1819 he worked as a graphic artist for the Topographic Department of the Army Headquarters. He travelled much throughout Russia and Persia and created many genre including battle pictures and local costumes, as well as portraits of his contemporaries. The painter was a member of a maison loge, forbidden by Alexander I, he was friends with the progressive Russian intellectuals: Ivan Krylov, Alexander Pushkin, Petr Vyasemsky, Denis Davydov, and others. His lithographs of Persia were published both as standalone lithographs as well as in book form in “Atlas ou Collection de 40 Dessins lithographiés par A. Orlowskj, Pour Servir Au Voyage en Perse, Fait pendant les années 1812 et 1813, par Gaspard Drouville, Colonel De Cavalerie au Service de S. M. L’Empereur De Toutes Les Russies Et Chavalier De Plusieurs Ordres. (St. Petersburg, 1820)” and “Collection de Costumes Persans Civils et Militaires, Dessinés d’après Nature par Alexandre Orlowski (St. Petersburg, 1822)”. Orlowski and Ker Porter are the only non-Iranian artists who have painted Fathali Shah from life.

RUSSIAN POLISH OIL PAINTING BY ALEXANDER ORLOVSKY

          Est: $100 - $150

Alexander Osipovich Orlovsky (1777 - 1832), oil on metal plate painting Follower Wild Carriage Ride. Housed in an old richly decorated giltwood and gesso frame. Alexander Orlovsky was a Russian painter, draughtsman, and printmaker of Polish birth. He trained at the Warsaw studio of Jan Piotr Norblin de la Gourdaine and received support from Princess Isabella Czartoryska. He also studied under the Polish court painter Marcello Bacciarelli, the engraver Bartolomeo Follin and the Polish miniaturist Wincenty Fryderyck Lesseur (1745-1813). Until the turn of the century, Orlovsky's career was marked by alternating periods of concentrated work and of travel abroad, often as a soldier or entertainer. Few works from this period survive. Orlovsky's early paintings were timid and imitative; his drawings, however, are assured, elegant and amusing, suggesting the influence of Norblin's combination of realism and imagination. From Norblin he also learned a free treatment of the subject and a concern with artistic expression. Provenance: Dorotheum, Vienna, 19th Century Paintings and Watercolours, September 13th, 2017, lot 91. One of a kind artworks. Antique Russian Fine Art For Collectors.

(Warsaw 1744–1832 Saint Petersburg) Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, monogrammed (in ligature), dated AO 1813, old label on the reverse, oil on canvas, 22.5 x 26.4 cm, framed Provenance: Brunn Rasmussen, 4 March 2004, lot 1625; European Private Collection. Aleksander Orłowski was born in Warsaw to an impoverished Szlachta family. Thanks to the support of Princess Izabela Czartoryska (1746-1835), a patron of the arts, collector and founder of Poland’s first National Museum, he was able to complete his artistic education under Jan Piotr Norblin (1745-1830), a Polish painter of French origin. He took part in the Kościuszko uprising against the Russians in 1793, as a soldier. However, this resulted in a crushing defeat and the third partition of Poland, and, by extension, the end of the Republic under constitutional law. Afterwards, he found protection in Warsaw with his patron, the Polish aristocrat Józef Antoni Poniatowski (1763-1813). There, he entertained the Prince’s guests by painting portraits of them at great speed, as well as by completing sketches and illustrations. In 1801, he went to Saint Petersburg in the service of Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich Romanov (1779-1831). Orłowski mainly focused on landscape painting and genre pieces showing everyday life in Poland and Russia. His renderings of riders and horses are particularly skilful, as in this lot, which depicts Don Quixote on his horse and Sancho Panza on his donkey. Thanks to his painterly talents, Orłowski portrays this scene in a lively and humorous way.

ExhibitedExposition des artistes polonais, Societe des Beaux-Arts, Paris, 1921 (typewritten label on frame).Alexander Orlowski, a Polish artist and lithographer who was a painter at the courts of the Tsars Alexander I and Nicolas I, travelled to Persia in the company of Gaspar Drouville on a mission from Tsar Alexander I. He painted numerous works during these travels, most of which are now in the National Museum in Krakow, the National Museum of Warsaw, the Russian Museum and the State Hermitage Museum, both in Saint Petersburg. He also produced lithographs after his paintings and drawings: those relating to Persia were published in Gaspard Drouville's Voyage en Perse, pendant les annees 1812 et 1813, Saint Petersburg 1819-20, and his own Collection de costumes Persans civils et militaires (1822). The present work, which was also rendered in lithograph, is thought to be the only work by Orlowski with Persian subject matter which is not in a public collection. Hajji Mirza Isma'il was sent by Fath 'Ali Shah Qajar to the Caucasus to become the civil administrator (Hokmran) of the Khanate of Erivan, alongside the military governor Hossein Quli Khan. The Qajar tribe itself came from this region. With the signing of the treaty of Torkmanchai in February 1828 the Khanate was annexed by the Russian Empire. Hajji Mirza Isma'il was forced to resign his post and evacuate Erivan and return to Persia.

He was one of the first Russian artists to begin using the technique of lithography. His works can be found in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian State Museum, the Moscow Historical Museum and other collections. He is known both for his caricature work with strong social commentary and his depictions of military scenes. Orlovsky was born and underwent his early professional training in Warsaw. He trained under Marcello Bacciarelli, Bartolomeo Follin and Wincenty Fryderyck Lesseur. He travelled to St. Petersburg in 1802 when he began working primarily for Russian sponsors. PROVENANCE INFORMATION This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
