              Est: ₱1,800,000 - ₱2,340,000

Heart’s Embrace signed and dated 2012 carved blue green glass H: 14 1/2” (37 cm) L: 10 1/2” (27 cm) W: 13 1/2” (34 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UP When Ramon Orlina started his sculpting career in the 1970s – the first of his kind as he cut into it instead of heating and blowing his glass like the usual glassmaking techniques used to do– his works veer more into the angular, all sharp edges and static curves. However, later works incorporated fluid movements and graceful arches, as evidenced by the 1977 Heart’s Desire. Heart’s Desire incorporates the curves that would emerge in his later works but still retains the sharp edges of his early oeuvres. What makes Orlina’s work so captivating is the three-dimensionality of his pieces. As he takes into account that the piece could be viewed from every possible angle, he incorporates light, shadow, and dimension as he crafts his masterpieces. With Heart’s Desire, one could look at the piece and see the softness of the curves or the harsh lines the base creates. Is your heart’s desire truly what you want or could it be a double-edged sword that would cut you in the end? The beauty of Orlina’s works is that they are experiential. One could never fully experience viewing it the exact same way as another wood, as his consideration for every vantage point creates a truly unique experience for every viewer – the light, shadows, and angle with which one views his works change, and with that, the viewer’s perception and interpretation too. VILLANUEVA COLLECTION Fantasie II signed and dated 1977 carved republic glass 14 1/2” x 10 1/4” x 4 1/2” (37 cm x 26 cm x 11 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UP The Earliest Orlina to Come to Auction by HANNAH VALIENTE Ramon Orlina’s 1977 Fantasie II echoes the characteristics of his early works. A pioneer in his craft, Orlina’s glass-cutting method varies from the usual hot-blowing technique – instead, his is a cold method, taking to a block of glass as a sculptor would a marble, minutely chipping away to create a vision in the fragile, easily breakable glass. The result is, for the start of his career, an oeuvre that boasts of sharp edges and cutting slopes. A master of incorporating light, shadows, and depth in his works, Orlina takes great inspiration from his childhood; growing up in Taal, Batangas opened his eyes up to the iridescence of the waters and the rocks, with artistry flowing in his blood as both his great-great-grandfather and his uncle are artists. Fantasie II features the sharp lines of his early works, and yet there are traces of the curves that would be featured in his later works. Just as the name suggests, Orlina mimics the fantastical elements of the unknown as he carves through the fragile glass with ease. Looking at Orlina’s works means taking into consideration the way the light filters through the translucent glass, the layers with which he incorporates in his piece. The fantasy of his works lies in the experience of it – one can never truly view an Orlina piece the exact same way another would. As one gazes at Fantasie II, they couldn’t help but wonder what are the others seeing, connecting the viewers and with Orlina himself, with each interpretation just as valid as the one that came before it.

As is with this 2001 untitled sculpture, Orlina fashions the glass into the shape of a breast, and yet it holds no erotica in its portrayal. “A master of the curvilinear form, Orlina can articulate the female form by the mere virtue of a series of sleek undulating lines, with all the eroticism sublimated within the energy and fluidity of the line.” Cid Reyes writes in a 2016 Inquirer article entitled Orlina draws optimal light from optical glass. Indeed, Orlina’s sculpture exalts not just the female body but the sustenance they bring to the child they bore into the world. Motherhood and familial bonds are favored subjects for Orlina and with this sculpture, it is evident just how high his respect is for the homemakers, putting into the spotlight the maternal care and intimacy that forms a solid foundation for the fruitful family life that the Filipino society extols. As art critic Eric Torres writes: "The female breast Orlina exhorts is no mere object of voyeuristic prurience. [It is] a hymn to every woman generously endowed by nature.” (Hannah Valiente)

Inspiration in Glass I signed and dated 2010 carved green glass 8 1/4" x 5" x 6 1/4" (21 cm x 13 cm x 16 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot Ramon Orlina’s mastery of the glass cannot be understated. Selftaught, his proficiency with the cold-cutting technique was a series of trial and error; prior to Orlina, there was no one who did that kind of cutting technique. It was this pioneering act that earned Orlina the moniker “Father of Philippine Glass Sculpture.” This 2010 sculpture is Orlina at his finest – with an intimate knowledge of light and depth, he creates a truly interesting experience that can be viewed from every possible angle. It is a dialogue between sculptor and audience, a harmonious connection between light, shadow, and luminosity to create every possible sensory effect. “You know, glass is transparent so it is much harder to work with than something opaque or something you cannot see through,” said Orlina in a 2002 interview with Philstar Global. “Not only do you have to design it so that it looks good all around, but you have to think about what one side will look like from the other side because you can see through the glass.” (Hannah Valiente)

Tai-Chi signed and dated 1984 carved green glass height: 10 1/2" (27 cm) width: 6" (15 cm) length: 5 1/2" (14 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot When Ramon Orlina first started his sculpting career in the 1970s (the first of its kind, as no one before him had done the cold method of cutting glass he would later be known for), his works were static and prismatic, their forms angular and sharp on the edges. However, as the years matured and the 1980s rolled in, he incorporated fluid curves and arcs into his works, mimicking the graceful curves of the human body. This is evident in this 1984 piece. The frosted glass creates a different (though no less impressive) illusion than Orlina’s usual clear glass and with the edges, it is not hard to see the slope of the shoulder and the tilt of the head from an angle. The three-dimensionality of his sculptures is among Orlina’s many assets – every angle is accounted for and every perspective yields a completely different result, making his works as experiential as visual arts can get. A licensed architect, Orlina’s background manifests in his “form follows function” maxim, a principle commonly found in late 19th and early 20th-century architecture. Structure, form, light, and space are carefully considered and manipulated in pursuit of another Orlina masterpiece. The 2023 Optical Illusions shows the best of what Orlina can offer: from cold blocks of glass painstakingly cut and polished (rather than the commonly used glass-blowing technique), the piece offers a unique three-dimensional experience unlike any other. Optical Illusions, like many Orlina works, can be viewed from multiple angles simultaneously with each view yielding a different emotional response than the last. Ramon Orlina’s works are a multidimensional experience, a magnificent affair that befits the Father of Philippine Glass Sculpture. To see it personally is to marvel at the way the light passes through to translucent glass and its sharply cut edges, showing a masterfully structured piece. (Hannah Valiente)

Mabunga signed and dated 2022 carved mediterranean blue glass heigth: 13 1/4” (34 cm) width: 13” (33 cm) length: 7” (18 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UPIn art, the color blue is associated with a multitude of reasons. At first, it commonly denoted royalty and divinity as the scarcity of lapis lazuli meant blue is a hard color to get. It was only at the dawn of the Industrial Age that blue became widespread and with that, it became synonymous with many imagery. Blue now is typically a symbol of melancholy and sadness but also, it represents stability, wisdom, and faith. In Ramon Orlina’s 2022 Mabunga, he uses mediterranean blue glass to carve out this masterpiece. Pioneering glass sculpture in the Philippines, Orlina’s technique differs from the typical glassblowing technique. Instead of shaping the glass through heat, Orlina instead chips at a cold block of glass, painstakingly considering the depth needed for the sculpture as well as the way the light passes through the piece. In this sense, Orlina’s pieces are truly multidimensional ones. His viewers are able to see the piece at every angle and from it, deduce the meaning of the work that is wholly personal. Initially an architect, Orlina’s scientific background became the foundation of his sculpture. “I am not very mechanical but my science and architecture background are very important,” Orlina said. “If you don’t have the science and architectural background, you don’t know the practical limitations of your artwork. You must have a good design, but if it cannot be built, then you will have a problem. In architecture, function is as important as the design; it’s no good if it doesn’t work.” Orlina pioneered glass sculpture in the Philippines, working with cold slabs of glass instead of putting glass through fire. Using this impressive technique, Orlina manages to create soft curves and sharp edges to create a truly multidimensional piece. Glass is a unique medium that allows itself to be viewed from multiple angles and Orlina masterfully manipulates depth and perspective to create an interactive piece as seen with this 2017 piece entitled Color of Amber V-07. Orlina’s mastery of light, form, and space truly shines in this piece. (Hannah Valiente)

Ramon Orlina (b. 1944) - Holy Family in Mediterranean Blue

              Est: ₱2,000,000 - ₱2,600,000

Holy Family in Mediterranean Blue signed and dated 2016 carved mediterranean blue crystal height: 20” (51 cm) width: 11” (28 cm) length: 11” (28 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UP The Holy Family was a popular art subject in the early 16th century, finding its place in the Italian, Dutch, and Flemish Renaissance paintings. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph find themselves in many a canvas, depicted in the stable by many brilliant artists throughout history. However, Ramon Orlina’s Holy Family in Mediterranean Blue stands out, particularly because it was a sculpture carved from hard glass. Pioneering the Philippine glass sculpture industry, Orlina’s practice differs from the usual glassblowing technique. His process is one of abrasion rather than heat, diligently chipping away at a block of glass to create a masterpiece. Art critic Rod Paras-Perez notes that Orlina “molds the glass as a sculptor would a piece of marble or any stone. Often by painstakingly guiding each work into the shape or form he wants.” Deservedly, his work is not only acclaimed in the country but also abroad. In the 2016 Holy Family in Mediterranean Blue, Orlina depicts the family in his three-dimensional abstract style. The deep blue denotes a feeling of calm, a serenity that many religious followers attest to as they profess their faith. The Mediterranean blue is dynamic, turned even more brilliant when the light hits the glass. This piece is uniquely multidimensional with its ability to be viewed from all angles. For all intents and purposes, Holy Family in Mediterranean Blue displays everything that made Orlina a household name in the Philippine art scene: his aptitude for color, his prowess with light, and his mastery of depth. He intentionally incorporates a multitude of perspectives and interpretations, intentionally avoiding a fixed viewing base for his glass sculptures. One such example would be this piece which, depending on the viewer and angle, may be interpreted as a mother child, lovers, or merely an intimate and platonic embrace. This deliberate approach encourages viewers to explore the artwork from various angles, enticing them into an infinite exploration. Orlina’s work pays homage to Philippine neorealism by distilling the form of his objects to their abstract and essential elements. Embracing an abstract-figurative style in his sculptures, he aims for universal accessibility and interpretation across diverse cultures, transcending cultural barriers for a broader audience reach. This glass sculpture dated 2000 bears the trademarks found in many of Orlina’s earlier works; a relentlessly angular structure, crystalline, staunch yet seemingly carved out of light. Within its tantalizing depths, one can clearly observe the artist’s mastery in how the reflection and refraction of light draws the eye to the sculpture’s glistening hues. The complexity of the work at hand is a visual marvel, utilizing sharp edges to seemingly warp the air surrounding it and inviting the viewer into the bends and folds of Orlina’s signature green glass. Cedars of Lebanon II signed and dated 2012 carved green glass height: 13 3/4” (35 cm) width: 9” (23 cm) length: 9” (23 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UPPioneering in glass sculpture in the Philippines, it is hard to believe that Ramon Orlina is not academically trained in the art. Instead, Orlina interweaves his professional background as a licensed architect in his work, espousing the “form follows function” principle that is associated with late 19th and early 20th century architecture. Many architectural functions found its way in Orlina’s work, like his consideration of structure, light, and space. This sculpture dated 2012 showcases the later art of Orlina, characterized by its fluidity and abstraction. As light hits the sculpture, the audience can appreciate Orlina’s mastery and manipulation of light, utilizing different depths to create a truly dimensional artwork that toes the elusive line between the scientific and the artistic. He marked a pivotal influence in the introduction and proliferation of glass as an art form in the Philippines. His works tend to be intriguing as they deal with various subjects, ranging from abstract interpretations to realistic representations of human forms. For Desirable Eve, a carved Mediterranean glass piece, Orlina presents a splendid artistic touch in this depiction of a female torso. Decades ago, in the ‘80s, when the artist explored the fluid forms for his sculptures, fragments of human anatomy emerged within his creations. The female breast, in particular, was idealized when his second daughter was born in 1989. As a homage to breastfeeding, Orlina’s wife was the inspiration behind his tabletop sculptures of beautiful breasts. As observed in this recent work of his, dated 2022, Orlina renders the female bust with delicate and graceful lines without being erotic. The female form, a symbol of beauty, grace, and fertility, along with its delicate features and curves, offers a visually captivating subject matter that allows Orlina to showcase his mastery of glass as a medium. Orlina’s glass sculptures are celebrated for their intricate details and the interplay of light and transparency. He takes advantage of how light passes through and interacts with the fragile and transparent medium. This creates a mesmerizing effect, as the sculptures seem to change in appearance depending on the lighting conditions. Indeed, Orlina’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of glass as an artistic medium has had a significant impact on the contemporary art scene in the Philippines. His sculptures have been featured in numerous exhibitions and art shows, both local and international. His contributions to the world of glass art have earned him recognition and accolades for his innovation and mastery of the medium. (Isabella Romarate)

He started with prismatic angles and then developed organic forms, experimented with textures and added some with holes, and until now, the innovative artist still finds himself incorporating various materials into his craft. The lot at hand dated 2020 is among the recent Orlina pieces that exhibit his classic geometrical design. His abstract sculptures are designed with angles that create sharp edges and slender bends, denoting movement and fluid lines. Thus, the renowned sculptor’s works are never static masses, owing to his creative manipulation of the diverse quality of light entering and retaining at various angles. Furthermore, his studies with light extend to exploring new colors are also observed in this carved Mediterranean blue glass, which has a shade that is darker and deeper than his iconic liquid green. For Ramon Orlina, a mother’s resonating declaration of her unbounded and unconditional love for her child evokes such a powerful message that it has become one of his most beloved subjects. Such fondness has also birthed a series of works revolving around maternal connection, such as the Ning-Ning Series. In the work at hand, the mother and child are depicted in a firm yet tender embrace, a symbol of unwavering protection. They seemingly coalesce into one form, signifying the transcendental nature of a mother’s consummate love and the everlasting essence of maternal connection that started in the womb, nourished in healthy parenting, and strengthened by life’s contradictions and vicissitudes. By depicting a subject that is eternally imbued in the collective psyche of the Filipinos, Orlina compellingly transforms the ambiguity of abstraction and intimately touches on our perception of values relating to familial love, be it in the personal level or the echelons of the socio-cultural sphere. By the same token, Mother and Child is a loving ode to every mother—and every person capable of manifesting the potent language of unconditional love. (Adrian Maranan)

Orlina utilizes spheres and straight lines to craft a sculpture containing elements of geometric and minimal—a piece that seemingly contains multiple dimensions; asymmetrical, shifting form when viewed from different angles. The artist imparts a sense of futurism in the work, a study in abstraction still conforming to an architect’s sense of space. To form the blocks into sculptures of ethereal beauty, the glass is painstakingly hand-cut and ground until the figure he envisions is gradually revealed. The lot on hand resembles that of a woman’s body based on the round, pointed breasts and a slim waist that flares into hips. The elegant contours of Nude must have been a great challenge for Orlina to shape and smoothen using his improvised and handmade tools. Orlina has done other sculptures showcasing torsos and hips. For instance, there was Torso in 1997 made of Asahi glass, and Ecstasy II in 2009 made of amber crystal. What makes Nude different from these pieces is that it features a graceful neck and shoulders. This piece also seems to be standing straight and her spine unarched, as opposed to another Orlina female figure in this auction. The ingenuity of Orlina's portrayal of the female figure has been praised by art critic Eric Torres. He points out that "The female breast Orlina exhorts is no mere object of voyeuristic prurience. [It is] a hymn to every woman generously endowed by nature. It is also a salute to the curve and the sphere as with an eye to perfection of form and finish. Orlina goes beyond the sensuous in the metaphysical.” This description is aptly applicable to the lot in hand, Nude. (Raphaela Cordero

The artist’s fascination with glass as a three-dimensional medium, after all, necessarily draws from his practice in architecture—a field of study that seems to hover elusively between art and scientific design. More than the establishment of structure, architecture also considers light and space, both of which become foregrounded in Orlina’s craft. As light filters through the jaggedly carved glass of Orlina’s pieces, a meditative play on light, shadow, and transparencies is evoked to soften the hard edges of form, thus letting the viewer witness a fluid interaction that transcends the sculpture’s own solidity. The result is a mystical experience of light—a feeling of ‘lightness’, or a sense of enlightenment from the sheer glass corporeality of the sculptural form. (Pie Tiausas)

In this piece aptly titled Coalesce, Orlina seamlessly bonds two separate pieces of carved glass into one visual display of sculptural magnificence. The sculptures are supported by a wooden base that serves as both their foundation and a “bridge” that “connects” them. The point of confluence where the two sculptures meet engenders a compelling optical illusion, resulting in a piece that elicits further artistic survey and brings out the creative exploration of thoughts in every viewer. Armed with a bachelor’s degree in architecture, which he obtained from the University of Santo Tomas in 1965, Orlina’s ingenuity weds integrity of form and balance. When viewed at a certain angle and distance, especially at the point of confluence, the sculptures seemingly form a mountain with sharp edges and a steepness so sheer that one can imagine an experienced hiker climbing with the aid of ropes and other mechanical devices. The work then becomes a microcosm of a breathtaking vista. (Adrian Maranan)

Or does the material itself possess an agency that works in confluence with that of the artist’s? The sculptures of Ramon Orlina come into form through a curious method of cold-working instead of employing the use of heat to mold the glass in its liquid state. This means that the artist cannot so easily direct the flow of glass into a certain shape. Instead, as he physically carves onto the cullets with various tools and abrasive powders, he is driven to work with the solidity of the medium in its not-so-malleable state. The refusal of cold hard glass to be so easily moldable implies an agency that the artist is forced to work with, and the form that comes about can only ever be as harmonious as the artist’s relationship with the medium. In the works of Ramon Orlina, it is then no wonder that there is a natural fluidity to his pieces. There is an illusion of liquid light as the smooth surface of glass reflects with a jade green splendor and light melodiously passes through varying transparencies, resulting in a perfect harmony of form, space, and light. If the sculptor is able to evoke the liquidity of solid form, then such a thing must only be made possible by touching the heart of glass. (Pie Tiausas)

These angles, rather than being rigid entities, represent the fluid lines that characterize his art. Through artful manipulation of natural light, which filters through the colored glass and becomes ensnared within different facets and angles, Orlina orchestrates an ever-shifting visual experience. No fixed perspective exists for his sculptures; they evolve with each viewer's vantage point, inviting interpretations that transcend the artist's original intention. Orlina's true accomplishment lies in liberating observers to perceive his creations through their own unique lens. The prismatic interplay of viewpoints conjures illusions that enrich the viewer's personal reading of the sculptures. Curvature in Azure Blue signed and dated 2011 glass 9 3/4" x 11 1/2" x 7" (24 cm x 29 cm x 19 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot LITERATURE It’s All About Abstract Art, The It's All About Art Series, Volume I, 2023. By Corazon Alvina et al. Januarius Holdings Inc. Pages, 96-99, with fullcolor illustrations on Pages 97 and 98. Ramon Orlina owes his ingenious manipulation of glass as a powerful medium in sculpting to his academic rearing at the University of Santo Tomas, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Architecture in 1965. The architectural principles Orlina imbibed through the course of his university education cultivated his artistic sensibilities. In a November 16, 2002 PhilStar article titled “Ramon Orlina’s translucent life,” the artist shares how his architectural background profoundly contributed to his distinct artistic style. “I am not very “mechanical,” but my science and architecture background are very important,” Orlina says. “It’s a big help to me now because when I create big works, I can design them in such a way that they will stand up, or we can put lights and so on. If you don’t have the science and architectural background, you don’t know the practical limitations of your artwork. You must have a good design, but if it cannot be built, then you will have a problem. In architecture, function is as important as the design; it’s no good if it doesn’t work.” In the same article, Orlina recounts his first encounter with glass as a medium. “I wanted todo something different. I started painting on glass using enamelbased paints. I chose glass because architecture is basically a lot of steel and glass, so I’ve always had a fascination of and love for these materials. Even when I was making houses, I was fascinated with glass. I liked mirrors because they widen the space. So, I started experimenting.” Orlina has cited the British sculptor Henry Moore as one of his foremost luminaries. Moore’s works possess that “force... a vitality from inside it, so that you have a sense that the form is pressing from inside trying to burst or trying to give the strength from itself.” Moore’s artistic principle is assimilated in this 2011 piece, Curvature in Azure Blue. Aside from his well-known, acclaimed series— Naesa, Ningning, Anna, and Michael’s Martial Arts, Orlina had also explored themes revolving around the subject of nature, such as fauna and water. In these themes, Orlina evokes the artistic practice of Moore by bringing to the forefront natural and organic forms, emphasizing their innate fluidity and arresting translucence. Such is the case with the work at hand. Here, the azure blue color Orlina employs fittingly induces feelings of tranquility and stability akin to the idyllic atmosphere invoked by the calming blue waters of the ocean. Orlina’s minimalist instincts are made evident through his use of simple lines. Light penetrates the interiors of the sculpture through its apertures, exhibiting Orlina’s refinement in using the full potential of space to bring out the work’s natural form. Therefore, this work is best seen as a sublime discourse between light, form, and space. (From an essay by A.M.)

His abstract sculptures are composed of a series of angles through creating sharp edges or slender bends that denote movement and fluid lines. Furthermore, the renowned sculptor’s works are never static masses, owing to his creative manipulation of the diverse quality of light entering and retaining at various angles. Once again, Orlina exhibited in this 1990 piece his artistic glass impressions through stellar representations of the facets of light. The illusions created through the various prismatic views add to the timeless beauty of Orlina’s art. His sculptures give an overall experience that invites dialogue and discourse. A viewer can appreciate an Orlina piece from any angle and interpret it beyond the artist’s original intent. “Glass is an endlessly intriguing material,” Orlina has said. “This gives me a greater challenge to explore its possibilities.” Indeed, his impeccable craftsmanship brings art glass to new heights. Ningning signed and dated 2023 carved black obsidian 10 1/2"x 8 1/2" x 8" (26 cm x 21 cm x 20 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE Acquired directly from the artist Ramon Orlina’s Ningning series encapsulates a profound celebration of the joys, struggles, and triumphs of motherhood and maternal bond and nourishment. Inspired by the birth of Orlina’s second daughter, Ningning, in 1989 and her subsequent breastfeeding for two years, the female breast becomes a creative avenue from which Orlina affectionately fosters his familial values. Orlina’s utilization of black obsidian is of particular interest. This exquisite glass sculpture is the first ever piece of obsidian that Orlina made. Black obsidian is also traditionally associated with potent protective and healing powers. Therefore, Orlina metamorphoses and elevates the power of black obsidian into one that represents the mutual symbiotic relationship between a mother and her child, in which maternal care and intimacy form the solid foundation of their enduring relationship. Orlina elevates the art form of the nude into something empowering and intimately sublime. (A.M.)

Lavish Strokes in Cobalt Blue signed and dated 2014 (bottom) carved cobalt blue crystal 15 1/2" x 13" x 8" (39 cm x 33 cm x 20 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot The glass oeuvres of Ramon Orlina have evolved through the decades. He started with prismatic angles and then developed organic forms, experimented with textures and added some with holes, and until now, the innovative artist still finds himself incorporating various materials into his craft. The sculpture at hand, Lavish Strokes in Cobalt Blue, is among the carved crystal pieces that manifest his artistic evolution. In plain sight, it is evident that it was rendered with visual movement. His abstract works are notably designed with sharp bends and sleek edges, but, as the title suggests, this particular piece was contoured with broad curvatures. Furthermore, his studies with light that extend to exploring new colors are also observed in this glass piece in cobalt blue, a shade that is darker and deeper than his iconic liquid green. 2014 was a successful year for Orlina. He held two solo shows titled “Art of Wine” at Shangri-La Edsa in Manila and “Summa Orlina” at MANILART 2014 in Joaquin Gallery. He was also included in several group exhibitions, including the Art Fair Philippines 2014. Furthermore, Orlina received two notable awards: People of the Year Award 2014 from Stargate PeopleAsia and The Rotary Golden Wheel Award in Arts and Culture from the Rotary Club, along with the Quezon City Government.
