He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and lived and worked in Paris after 1910. His restless life across several European cities allowed him to build a vast network of collectors, art dealers, and artists. As a Jewish painter, his work was denounced in Germany after 1933, and from 1937, numerous pieces were confiscated and destroyed in German museums. In 1943, he was taken from Paris to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he was murdered.

Max Oppenheimer in Vienna Max Oppenheimer, as son of an editor of the Neue Freie Presse newspaper and as protagonist of late Viennese Modernism, cultivated a special interest in human nature very early on. Shortly before 1910 as connoisseur and member of the Café Central Clique in Vienna, he availed of a rich environment populated with such unusual personalities as Adolf Loos, Arthur Schnitzler, and later Heinrich and Thomas Mann, whose idiosyncrasies he had the unique opportunity to study and record. In contrast to and quite different from his great idol Egon Schiele, he seldom opted for the self-portrait as motif; to be exact, only once per decade in the creative period prior to his emigration: in 1908, 1911, 1924, and finally in 1932. In spring of that same year, he had returned from Berlin to resettle in Vienna and had moved into a studio on Neulinggasse 39 in Vienna’s 3rd district. Shrewdly, he had recognised the growing political aggression in Germany as an inescapable danger for himself as a Jewish artist. However, in Vienna he was not yet restricted in his work, and over the following six years Oppenheimer found repeated opportunities for exhibitions, sales and intensive work. Already in the autumn of 1932, he had the chance to showcase a representative exhibition of more than thirty oil paintings at the Künstlerhaus from November 1932 to January 1933. He also submitted this self-portrait and the portraits of Martin Hürlimann (cat. no. 6) and Moissey Kogan (cat. no. 7). In March 1938, the night the borders were closed, Max Oppenheimer managed to flee in time to Switzerland, hence he emigrated to New York in November. Shortly afterwards his studio in Vienna was plundered; his last self-portrait and the two portraits were part of the loot. They subsequently landed in the hands of the painter and Nazi-party member Julius Fargel who donated the works to the Vienna Municipal Collections (now Wien Museum) in February 1939. In 1994, the self-portrait was presented in the first major retrospective of the artist’s work after the war at the Jewish Museum Vienna. Following the restitution procedure in summer to the heirs of Max Oppenheimer, two charitable organisations, all three works can be offered for sale – 70 years after Max Oppenheimer’s death on 19 May 1954. Max Oppenheimer’s last Self-Portrait The portrait almost breaks through its frame. The spread legs fill the painting right up to the edges, while the slightly tilted head extends beyond the frame’s border. It is as if, in the course of painting, the canvas became too small for the artist, as though with impulsive energy, he pushed himself ever closer to the viewer. This self-portrait of the painter Max Oppenheimer is a fascinating depiction that oscillates between bold self-confidence and inner turmoil. His upright position at the center of the painting, arms raised with forceful tension, holding a paint palette and brush, and one eye tightly squinted, conveys an intense, almost resolute presence. Yet, the colour planes shattered into countless fragments throw this impression of certainty into a wavering, tension-filled chaos.

The game of chess therefore also accompanied him artistically in the most diverse periods of his work, in ever-changing combinations and image sections. (cf. Marie-Agnes von Puttkamer, Max Oppenheimer. 1885–1954, Vienna 1999, cat. rais. no. 107 (1916), no. 212 (1931), no. 265 (1939), as well as in: Max Oppenheimer. Expressionist pioneer, Leopold Museum, Vienna 2023, ill. p. 272 This painting is a new discovery and according to family tradition a gift in lieu of payment for a Viennese dentist who was also a chess player. Oppenheimer lived in Vienna again from 1932 to 1938, and the present work can also be stylistically dated to these years. In 1935, Max Oppenheimer was given the opportunity to exhibit at the Vienna Secession. Two chess games are mentioned in the catalog under nos. 16 and 19, but without an illustration or precise picture details (cf. Puttkamer, nos. 212 and 248). It is therefore not possible to identify this painting as one of them, but the exhibition shows Oppenheimer’s enduring interest in chess as a pictorial motif. The focus of the composition is on the moment of the move, which is of decisive importance given the small number of pieces on the board. The extreme close-up view of the board alone heightens the tension, elevating the hands with their delicate but “speaking” fingers – so characteristic of Oppenheimer – to the status of the actual players. Similar to the first known version from 1916, only the profile of one player can be seen, tensely observing his opponent’s decision, while the match has gone out without lighting the cigarette.

The act of making music is intensively experienced. In this work, Oppenheimer borrows from Cubism and Futurism, creating a unique composition with his distinctive touch. Besides portraits and still lifes, in which Oppenheimer incorporated stylistic ideas drawn from the New Objectivity, Cubism, Futurism and Dadaism, he was particularly interested in depicting music and its protagonists. He had received violin lessons back in early childhood and throughout his life also engaged artistically with the theme of music and, above all, the theme of stringed instruments, which he explored in many different variations and techniques. The joint Hagenbund Exhibition in Vienna in 1924, at which his monumental orchestra scenes in oil were presented to great acclaim, marked a high point in this regard. Taking as one’s starting point the 1914 painting Hess-Quartett (Puttkamer 1999, cat.-no. 93, p. 242), which still includes the musicians in the composition, there is an intensification of the form of the motif just one year later; in the exhibition poster for the Kunstsalon Wolfsberg, Oppenheimer for the first time focuses exclusively on the musical instruments, the hands of the string players and the music books, intentionally omitting any depiction of the people. Borrowing from Cubist and Futurist compositional devices, the motifs are depicted interlocked in such a way that the laws of perspective are completely suspended. In this version, too, Oppenheimer intentionally does not show the heads of the musicians but concentrates entirely on the three instruments – two violins and a piano, the music books and the arrangement of the four hands. In doing so, Oppenheimer takes pains to depict the precise positions of the individual fingers. In the famous colour lithographs of the Rosé Quartett, he intensifies the focus on the hands still further by painting them – in a style reminiscent of Schiele’s lean figures – in an exaggeratedly sinewy and highly detailed manner, with heavily emphasised knuckles, to a much greater extent than seen here. The music sheets seem to flutter through the room; in the case of the hands and instruments, the viewer cannot be sure whether they are looking at two musicians sitting close together or just one, whose breathtakingly rapid movements are depicted using multiple parallel images, as in Futurist works. In 1908 and 1909 participated in the Vienna Art Show. Early influences of Vincent van Gogh, counted among the Viennese Expressionists around Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and Albert Paris Gütersloh. 1911 to 1915 in Berlin, involvement with Cubism and collaboration on the journal Die Aktion. 1915 to 1925 in Switzerland, beginning his exploration of music. End of the 1920s in Berlin and from 1931 again in Vienna. 1932 emigration via Switzerland to the USA. In 1937 his works were classified by the Nazis as degenerate art. Created mainly portraits, religious depictions and scenes from everyday life. Numerous expressionist works with influences from Cubism and Futurism on the theme of music, impressive depictions of composers, conductors, musicians and famous orchestras such as the string quartet founded by the brothers Arnold Rosé and Eduard Rosé in 1882. Only the hands of the musicians Paul Fischer, Arnold Rosé, Anton Ruzitska and Anton Walter are visible, the tense fingers, the bows and instruments condense into intense playing.         Portrait Prof. Dr. Martin Hahn -- Bleistift auf bräunlichem Velin. Um 1926. -- 45,5 x 34 cm. -- Unten rechts mit Bleistift signiert "MOPP", unten links mit Feder in Braun signiert "M. Hahn". -- -- Souverän umreißt Mopp mit nur wenigen geschwungenen Linien und den charakteristischen Parallelschraffuren den fülligen, leicht nach rechts gewandten Kopf des Wissenschaftlers. Der Mikrobiologe und Hygieniker Martin Hahn (1865–1934) war von 1922 bis 1933 Leiter des Berliner Hygiene-Instituts. 1933 wurde er all seiner Ämtern enthoben. Im Jahr 1926 entstand Oppenheimers in Öl gemaltes Bildnis des Wissenschaftlers, zu dem unsere Zeichnung wahrscheinlich als Vorstudie diente (vgl.
