(BRITISH 1876-1961) ON THE GRAND CANAL, VENICE Signed, oil on canvas (76cm x 76cm (30in x 30in)) Though his name is inextricably linked with the Kirkcudbright School of artists, the half-German, Manchester-born-and-raised Oppenheimer did not in fact settle in this region until the end of World War One. Over time he became a respected stalwart of the Scottish art world and a Royal Scottish Academician. His oeuvre is firmly and famously associated with the depiction of Galloway. Less well known perhaps is the fact that, as his biographer Euan Robson puts it, “Italy was as much his muse as Galloway”. As a body of work, they are much less frequently seen outside private collections comparative to his Scottish subject matter. Lyon & Turnbull are therefore delighted to offer a scarce and significant Italian painting by the artist, the most monumental in scale and sophistication to be seen on the market for some years. Oppenheimer’s love affair with Italy was a long and enduring one. In 1896 at the age of 21 he won a funded prize to travel to Florence and Venice. A deep passion for the country began. He was, in fact, retracing the steps of his father Ludwig Oppenheimer, a diversely talented individual who reputedly studied mosaic design and manufacture in Venice in the 1860s. It is thought the artist and his wife Connie travelled to Italy on honeymoon in 1903 and continued to do so frequently after the interlude of WW1, visiting throughout the 1920s and 30s. Verona and Venice were his main destinations of choice. This makes great sense: Oppenheimer was a master of depicting water and the play of light and shadow, and Venice especially with its canals and densely arranged architecture would have provided endless compositional inspiration to tempt his brush. In 1913 Oppenheimer exhibited Italian pictures at Doig, Wilson and Wheatley gallery on George Street, Glasgow, as well as at the RSA. It was a significant exhibition and he received numerous positive reviews. The Glasgow Herald’s critic remarked: “Mr Oppenheimer’s work impresses by way of its distinguished draughtsmanship and a refined sense of colour…[The painting]…possesses exhilarating sparkle and there is a subtle restraint in colouring: there are none of those lurid splashes which give some pictures of Italy the effect of mere garishness.” These words could quite easily be applied as a descriptor to the later painting of c.1928, On the Grand Canal, Venice, that we offer now for sale. Here we have a tranquil depiction of Venice’s most famous waterway, quiet and calm in the afternoon heat, the only sounds evoked being the lap of water against stone. Redolent, as the critic would have it, “…[of]…the drowsy felicity which belongs to life in these pleasant places.” The water is masterful; ripples and reflections rendered with comprehensive realism and skill. The light and heat of the day glare and glance off the stone walls whilst darkened alcoves and interiors coolly and enticingly recede into cleverly described shadow. Oppenheimer, as the Herald critic alluded, did not have a hyperbolic artistic vocabulary. This is attested to by the subtle tonalities of the palette here, which allow Venice to weave its romantic magic simply and on its own terms, free from excessive artistic licence. Oppenheimer’s artworks were sketched en plein air, indeed sometimes painted outdoors too before finishing in the studio from earlier studies. One certainly senses that immediacy here; the plein air approach almost certainly responsible for rendering this painting so very transportive and truthfully evocative. One such working sketch for this painting is recorded in Robson’s monograph of the artist (Euan Robson, Charles Oppenheimer: From Craftsman to Artist, Atelier Books, Edinburgh, 2012, p.73, pl.s39), a watercolour c.1928, held now in a private collection. The subject, Palazzo Contarini Fasan, is an unusual 15th-century Venetian gothic structure. It is also known as Casa di Desdemona for its famed associations with Shakespeare’s Othello. Legend has it that Nicola Contarini, a famous heroic leader in the wars against the Turks in the 1500s, once lived in the palazzo. He was said to have had dark skin, subsequently nicknamed "Moor". Contarini's wife, Palma Querini, was the inspiration, possibly, for the character of Desdemona. Exhausted by the brutal jealousy of her husband, she fled the marriage to return to her family. Furthermore, John Ruskin wrote in his The Seven Lamps of Architecture that the palazzo was "the most elaborate piece of architecture in Venice." Little wonder then, that the romanticism of the building’s legendary history and its unusual and beautiful façade captured the attention of Oppenheimer, who afforded it a substantially sized stretch of canvas.

Charles Oppenheimer is regarded as a quintessentially Scottish artist, although he was born in Oldham and did not settle north of the border until 1908. Oppenheimer trained under Walter Crane at Manchester School of Art, as well as in Italy. He was instinctively drawn to Scotland, although more to the lowlands and the pastoral landscapes of Kirkcudbrightshire, than to the rugged Highlands. Famously his paintings often depict the same view at different times of year. He was a keen fisherman and had a talent for capturing the fall of light on water. He painted landscapes and townscapes, and also designed a number of iconic posters for British Rail. Oppenheimer was elected RSW in 1912, ARSA in 1927 and RSA in 1934. The picture offered here is a view of Oppenheimer's house at 14 High Street, Kirkcudbright, where he lived between 1908 and 1931. He rented the house from E.A. Hornel, who lived next door in Broughton House (now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland). By the time that Oppenheimer settled there, Kirkcudbright had long been a centre of artistic activity. Artists had been drawn there since the 1880s, and by 1900 the little town was attracting artists from Glasgow and Edinburgh including E.A. Walton, A.S. Hartrick, James Lawton Wingate, David Gauld and D.Y. Cameron. Oppenheimer moved there in 1908, and, having served with the Royal Artillery during the Great War, returned to Kirkcudbright at its close, finding many new friends. Among them were the book illustrator Jessie M. King and her husband, E.A. Taylor who, having lived in Kirkcudbright before the war, had returned there in 1915. From 1929 the crime writer Dorothy L. Sayers and her husband also rented a studio in The High Street, next door to Oppenheimer, and became good friends. Oppenheimer painted several similar views of his home at number 14. One now hangs in Oldham Art Gallery and another in Broughton House itself. While the Broughton picture shows the house at twilight with the evening sun reflecting off the windows, that in Oldham shows the same scene on a bright, sunny day in which the whitewashed walls seem to belong more to the Midi than to Kirkcudbright.

This impressive river scene captures Oppenheimer’s familiarity with, and affection for, the rivers around his Kirkcudbright home. The composition was painted from the riverbank overlooking the Bridge of Dee, Galloway, a charming scene that remains virtually unchanged today. Oppenheimer preferred to work with a warm palette to evoke the characteristic pale golden light that so often illuminates his paintings, qualities that are exemplified here. This painting was amongst the sixty-one exhibited by Oppenheimer at the Royal Academy, and demonstrates his broad, expressive brushwork and sensitive approach to his subject-matter. Oppenheimer relocated to Kirkcudbright in the 1930s and quickly set about exploring and recording his surroundings. He soon became a key member of the Kirkcudbright School, which from 1850-1950 flourished as a significant Scottish artistic hub. Oppenheimer integrated himself within the local painting community, yet amongst the Kirkcudbright School his style remains distinctive. His work has been described as ‘direct, tranquil and contemplative’, a natural consequence of the fastidious discipline with which he approached his painting practice: Oppenheimer committed to long, intensive hours at the easel in order to realise his vision. By the outbreak of the Second World War, he had become an artist of international repute, and his work was exhibited throughout Europe, as well as in New Zealand and North and South America. To his friends, he advised that he would ‘always use the best paints, brushes and canvasses, because you never know when you will do your finest work.’

However, as Euan Robson so eloquently reveals, Italy was as much his muse as Galloway. From his very first visit in 1896, funded by an artistic cash prize, he was captivated by this beautiful country the heat, light, warmth, friendship and culture he found there. It was the start of a long-standing love affair and many decades of inspiration and subject matter. Possibly his most artistically-significant visit was the tour he undertook with William Stewart MacGeorge, an important friend and advisor to Oppenheimer, who also called Galloway home. They spent the summer of 1912 touring Northern Italy by train, dedicating particular time and attention to Venice and Verona. It would seem that both paintings offered here date from this trip watercolour scene Venice is explicitly dated 1912, while Serenata was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1913, as part of the exhibition season where both artists were showing their Italian works from the 1912 trip. One such exhibition was pivotal for Oppenheimer, placing him as a significant player in the Scottish art scene: he exhibited fifty-two of his works in Glasgow, and received a rave review in the Glasgow Herald, celebrating his dignified draughtsmanship and refined sense of colour as well as his exhilarating sparkle. Later in his life, Oppenheimer continued to return to Italy to find inspiration and refresh his palette and approach. In 1923 he exhibited A Song of Venice at the R.G.I. exhibition and from Robsons description this appears to be a re-working of the subject of Serenata: a collection of gondolas lit by lanterns float together of an evening, the gondoliers and their passengers listening to a recital by a chanteuse delivered from the prow of one of the boats. It is probably unsurprising that such a glamourous, dramatic and quintessentially Italian scene would captivate an artist obsessed with light and reflection, for over a decade. Looking at the two offered Venetian works by Oppenheimer truly demonstrates the range of his talent, and his ability to bring his exhilarating sparkle to wildly differing scenes of this beloved city. We move from the watercolour depiction of the light, bright sunshine of daytime Venice, and the everyday Venetian sight of a gondolier navigating one of the myriad canals to the dramatic spectacle in oil of a singer performing from a gondola, as a crowd gathers around her the lanterns glow, the boats bob and all the glittering lights are reflected in the darkening waters.
