Attributed to John Opie RA (British, 1761-1807)

    Est: £500 - £1,000

Attributed to John Opie RA (British, 1761-1807) Portrait of Thomas Harvey of Catton (1748-1819) oil on canvas, unframed 58 x 45cm Literature: Possibly the portrait of Thomas Harvey recorded by Ada Earland in 'John Opie and his circle', 1911, Appendix C. Another version of this portrait, catalogued as 'After John Opie', is in the collection of Norfolk Museums (NWHCM : 1959.161). However, the superior quality of the present work indicates it is likely Opie's original. Thomas Harvey of Old Catton was an art collector and amateur painter whose townhouse was in Colegate, Norwich. Harvey was descended from a line of wealthy merchants, many former Lord Mayors of Norwich. He married the daughter of a Rotterdam trader and acquired a collection of Dutch masters which he allowed the young John Crome to copy.

John Opie RA (British, 1761-1807) Portrait of 'Mr Wilson' in a black jacket, holding spectacles, before a red curtain oil on canvas 77 x 64cm Provenance: By descent within the family of Sir William Foster, 1st Baronet of Norwich (1798–1874), to Janet Foster, 8 Stanley Crescent, London, W11 An ink drawing dated 1801 by Henry Bone, after this painting, is in the National Portrait Gallery collection (NPG D17584), together with a further pencil study by Bone of the same sitter after Sir William Beechey (NPG D17772). The resultant miniature by Bone deriving from the present subject was sold at Christie's, London, 25th May 2004, Lot 32. A further drawing by Bone (NPG D17295), after William Owen, depicts Mrs Wilson and her sister, the memoirist Susan Sibbald (1783-1866), daughters of Dr. Thomas Mein, of Eildon Hall, Roxburghshire, a physician in the Royal Navy. Isabella 'Betsy' Wilson (née Mein), who was born in Cornwall and died in Devon, is recorded as marrying Thomas Wilson, the likely identification of the present sitter, in Marylebone in 1801. It is also possible that Thomas Wilson was related to John Peter Wilson, Captn. Hon. East India Company, whose portrait Opie got up from his deathbed to paint and left unfinished (Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, 1975.087.001).

JOHN OPIE (BRITISH 1761-1807) PORTRAIT OF JUDGE GEORGE LEWIS NEWNHAMOil on canvas laid to board126 x 101.5cm (49½ x 39¾ in.)In a Maratta frameLiterature:(G. Nares, 'Adlington Hall, Cheshire - III: The home of Mrs. Legh', Country Life, 12 December 1952, p. 1962 and fig. 4 'The Dining-Room, beneath the Drawing-Room). George Lewis Newnham (c. 1733-1800) was an English lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1780.Newnham was the eldest son of Nathaniel Newnham, a London merchant and MP, and his wife Sarah Adams. He was educated at Eton College from 1745 to 1748 and was admitted to Lincoln's Inn on 20 November 1749 and Clare College, Cambridge on 10 April 1751. He was called to the bar on 3 February 1757. Newnham's father recommended his son to the Duke of Newcastle for a seat in Parliament in 1761, but the Duke appeared to exclude him from opportunities at Lewes. In 1768 Newnham stood at Nottingham but withdrew before the poll. He became a Bencher of Lincoln's Inn and King's Counsel in 1772. At the 1774 general election, he was returned unopposed as Member of Parliament for Arundel on the interest of Sir John Shelley. In Parliament he voted with the opposition, but does not appear to havespoken. He did not stand in the 1780 general election. Newnham married Mary Ashton of Lincoln's Inn Fields on 7 October 1778. He succeeded to his mother's Newtimber estate on her death in 1788. He died on 2 August 1800. He and his wife Mary had one son and a daughter, Louisa, who married Sir Thomas Legh in 1812.
