    • JOAN O'NEILLE ROSIÑOL (Palma de Mallorca, 1828 - 1907). "Mountain landscape". Oil on panel. Unsigned.
      Oct. 06, 2022

JOAN O'NEILLE ROSIÑOL (Palma de Mallorca, 1828 - 1907). "Mountain landscape". Oil on panel. Unsigned.

      Est: €400 - €450

JOAN O'NEILLE ROSIÑOL (Palma de Mallorca, 1828 - 1907). "Mountain landscape". Oil on panel. Unsigned. Size: 15,5 x 22,5 cm; 30 x 37 cm (frame). Joan O'neille envelops us in a serene mountain landscape. Various rocky massifs frame the foreground, dotted with low bushes. The cloudless sky occupies half of the composition, which has a classical, well-balanced character. The artist uses the resources of the oil technique with confidence and efficiency, and is particularly interested in capturing the light and atmosphere, skilfully alternating more illuminated and shadowy planes, thereby managing to create a successful sensation of depth. Joan O'Neille, a convinced cultivator of classical landscape painting and a renovator of the genre in Mallorca, was one of the six most important artists of the Mallorcan school of the 19th century. Of Irish descent and aristocratic status, he was also a theorist of this pictorial genre, and published "Tratado de paisaje" (1862), a compendium of rules and instructions to facilitate the practice of landscape painting, in which he attempted to reconcile the two aspects of landscape in the neoclassical period: the idealist and the naturalist. He began his training as a disciple of Salvador Torres and Bartolomé Sureda, and attended Agustín Buades's painting classes for a month. It was probably from Sureda that he received his first instructions on the practice of landscape painting. His acquaintance and relationship with Carlos de Haes was also decisive when the latter travelled to Mallorca around 1874 and 1876. His first known works, dating from 1855, are landscapes in watercolour, and at the end of the decade he also began to paint in oil. His work falls within the framework of classicist naturalism and focuses mainly on grandiose and panoramic mountain landscapes. His painting, centred on the Mallorcan landscape, would correspond to his theoretical formulations, leaning within classicism towards an increasingly accentuated naturalism. In 1858 he was elected secretary general of the Academy of Fine Arts of Palma, a post he held until his death. As secretary of the Academy, and later as a teacher at the School of Fine Arts, he was in frequent contact with his students, especially with Antoni Ribas and Ricard Anckermann. In fact, at the latter's suggestion, in 1876, he obtained the post of secretary of the Foment de la Pintura i Escultura (Promotion of Painting and Sculpture). During the 1870s he practised plein air painting with Ribas and Anckermann, depicting the mountainous landscapes of Mallorca from life. This collaboration gave rise to works by the three painters with notable stylistic, chromatic and technical similarities. In 1974 Aureliano de Beruete visited the island at his invitation, and three years later he returned to Mallorca with his master, Carlos de Haes. They both came into contact with the Mallorcan landscape, shared experiences with O'Neille, Ribas and Anckermann and raised the prestige of the landscape genre among local painters and buyers of paintings. Nevertheless, the new landscape conceptions did not convince O'Neille, who in the 1880s returned to the previous naturalist line of restrained colour, academic style and great technical rigour. His polemical position with regard to innovations in landscape painting led him to take part in heated controversies, among them the one in the press with the critic Miguel Sarmiento concerning the painting of Antoni Gelabert. O'Neille continued to paint, but finally health problems related to his eyesight and arthrosis reduced his output from 1903 onwards. By that date the painter had taken part in the Universal Exhibition in Paris (1878) and in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions of 1862, 1864, 1866, 1866, 1884, 1887, 1895 and 1897, receiving honourable mentions in the last two. He also presented his work in Barcelona and Palma, where he was awarded a silver medal. Joan O'Neille is currently represented in the Museu d'Art Modern Es Baluard and the Lluc, both in Mallorca, as well as in various public and private collections.
