HENRY NELSON O'NEIL (1817-1880) ÉPISODE DE LA GUERRE D'INDÉPENDANCE DE LA GRÈCE EPISODE FROM THE GREEK WAR OF INDEPENDANCE Huile sur toile, signée et datée "1870" en bas à droite. 80 X 112 CM (31 1/2 X 44 1/16 IN.) €30,000-50,000 Cet important tableau s'inspire d'un épisode célèbre de la guerre d'indépendance grecque (1821-1830). Un jeune guerrier blessé a trouvé refuge dans une grotte. Il est veillé par une noble dame qui attend l'aide de son serviteur pour lui porter les premiers soins. Cette guerre a inspiré un grand nombre d'intellectuels et romantiques tels Delacroix avec son tableau "Les massacres de Scio"(1863) ou Hugo avec son poème "L'enfant grec"(1829) en France et Lord Byron en Angleterre. Byron (1788-1824) grand voyageur et amoureux de la Grèce a été fortement marqué par cette guerre d'indépendance. Cette guerre considérée comme une "épopée romantique" où le héros répond à l'idéel romantique et la soif de liberté des poètes fut une source d'inspiration littéraire pour Byron. En vrai romantique, Il participa activement à cette guerre en subventionnant la flotte grecque, et en payant de son engagement de sa vie. Byron est considéré comme un héros en Grèce.

O'Neil entered the Royal Academy Schools at the age of 19 in 1836. He already exhibited at the RA from 1838 onwards. He was a successful and prolific painter who felt comfortable in most areas of painting, but he was mainly remembered for his highly successful genre scenes, especially Eastward Ho of 1857. Emotionally charged and meticulously detailed, he shows the women, sweetheart, and families of troops embarking an army ship at the time of the Indian Mutiny. His equally popular images Home Again and Princess Alexandra Landing in Gravesend were in a similar fashion. He exhibited at the Royal Academy until 1879 and at the British Institution since 1839 for 22 years. Wieder zuhause, Öl auf Leinwand, 80 x 62,5 cm, unten links signiert: H.
