Julian Onderdonk Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, b. 1882 - d. 1922

Artist, Julian Onderdonk, best known for his Impressionist landscapes of Texas bluebonnets, was born in San Antonio in 1882. At 19, he studied at the Art Students League in New York City. After attending a William Merritt Chase exhibit, he left to study with Chase at the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art and was soon painting the Texas landscapes for which he is known. In 1906, his position assisting at the Dallas State Fair art exhibition allowed him to divide time between New York and San Antonio.

During his New York days, artist Julian Onderdonk worked under several pseudonyms and produced numerous paintings. The artist died unexpectedly in Dallas at age 40. Julian Onderdonk paintings and art for sale are desired by Texans, including former President George W. Bush who displayed several in the Oval Office. Browse Invaluable for other Impressionist landscape paintings for sale online and at auction.

  • Julian Onderdonk (1882-1922) Sunset on Wular Lake, c. 1914
    Oct. 12, 2024

Julian Onderdonk (1882-1922) Sunset on Wular Lake, c. 1914

    Est: $150,000 - $200,000

Julian Onderdonk (1882-1922) Sunset on Wular Lake, c. 1914 oil on canvas 32 x 49 inches 39.75 x 56.75 inches (frame) signed lower right: Julian Onderdonk after Maj E. Molyneaux [sic] Julian Onderdonk was a native of San Antonio and son of important Texas artist, Robert Jenkins Onderdonk. In 1901, at the age of nineteen, he moved to New York City and attended the Art Students League. He then studied plein-air painting with William Merritt Chase at his summer school in Shinnecock, New York. He returned to Texas in 1909 and continued to enjoy considerable success during his lifetime. He became best known for his paintings of bluebonnets, but he also loved to depict the Texas Hill Country in all its incarnations. He suffered an early death at the age of 40. Sunset on Wular Lake is a copy of a watercolor originally painted by Major Edward Molyneux. Molyneux (1866–1913) was a British painter. During his years in the Himalayan Valley of Kashmir, Molyneux painted Sunset on Wular Lake along with many scenes of the capital city of Srinagar and other areas which inspired him. The paintings were published in a book titled “Kashmir” (1909), accompanied by descriptions of the Valley by Sir Francis Younghusband. This monumental work is a truly unique commission created by the artist for prominent Texas patrons, JH and Alice Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick graduated from the University of Texas Law School and served in the 22nd session of the state legislature in 1890-1891. Kirkpatrick was later involved in real estate in the San Antonio area. He and his wife, Alice, with their only son Oran, traveled around the world for four years at the turn of the century. The Kirkpatricks had a friendship with Julian Onderdonk’s father, Robert, along with other prominent artists in San Antonio. Robert spent time with JH and Alice at Grand Lake, Colorado at a home they owned there. Pompeo Coppini, the renowned sculptor, was another friend of the Kirkpatricks, and he sculpted busts of several of the Kirkpatrick family members. The group of men that included JH Kirkpatrick, Robert Onderdonk, Pompeo Coppini, and others would meet at the Original Mexican Restaurant along the river in downtown San Antonio and named themselves the “Chili Thirteen”. It could be the friendship that JH had with Julian Onderdonk’s father that provided an opportunity for the Kirkpatricks to commission this work from Julian Onderdonk. The Kirkpatricks had traveled to areas throughout India during their trip around the world, and after returning to Texas, Kirkpatrick delivered sixty-eight lectures on his travels. It is likely that he and his wife had been to Kashmir and had seen works of Major Molyneaux either in person, or in a copy of his illustrated book “Kashmir”, which included a depiction of the painting Sunset on Wular Lake. This passion for exotic travel explains the Onderdonk commission of a scene from India, instead of his typical Texas landscape.

Julian (Robert Julian) Onderdonk (1882 - 1922) American

    Est: $4,500 - $6,500

Julian (Robert Julian) Onderdonk (1882 - 1922) Oil on canvas, Signed Lower Right, Measures (7 x 10 inches) w/frame (13.5 x 16 inches) Julian Onderdonk was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Robert Jenkins Onderdonk, a painter, and Emily Gould Onderdonk. He was the brother of Eleanor Onderdonk, also a prominent Texas painter, sculptor, and art administrator. His grandfather Henry Onderdonk was the Headmaster of Saint James School in Maryland, from which Julian's father Robert graduated. He was raised in South Texas and was an enthusiastic sketcher and painter. As a teenager Onderdonk was influenced and received some training from the prominent Texas artist Verner Moore White who also lived in San Antonio at the time. He attended the West Texas Military Academy, now the TMI Episcopal, graduating in 1900. At 19, with the help of a generous neighbor, Julian left Texas in order to study with the renowned American Impressionist William Merritt Chase. Julian's father, Robert, had also once studied with Chase. Julian spent the summer of 1901 on Long Island at Chase's Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art. He studied with Chase for a couple of years and then moved to New York City to attempt to make a living as an en plein air artist. While in New York he met and married Gertrude Shipman and they soon had a daughter, Adrienne. Onderdonk returned to San Antonio in 1909, where he produced his best work. His most popular subjects were bluebonnet landscapes. President George W. Bush decorated the Oval Office with three of Onderdonk's paintings. The Dallas Museum of Art has several rooms dedicated exclusively to Onderdonk's work. His art studio currently resides on the grounds of the Witte Museum. Harry A. Halff and Elizabeth Halff spent twenty years gathering his works into a book they published called Julian Onderdonk: A Catalogue Raisonne. The San Antonio Museum of Art created an exhibit to coincide with the publication of the book which included 25 of Onderdonk's paintings from January 20-April 23, 2017.

In 1909, after studying art in New York for eight years, Julian Onderdonk returned to his native Texas. For the remainder of his career, before his tragic death in 1922, Onderdonk would paint the Texas landscape with a skill and sensitivity few, if any, artists have equaled. The artist's father and fellow painter, Robert J. Onderdonk, helped found the Art Student League of New York and studied under William Merritt Chase during his last year there. Robert eventually settled in San Antonio and started a family. When the younger Onderdonk was sixteen years old, Robert officially became his first art teacher. The quality of Julian Onderdonk's work is largely rooted in the formal training he received while attending the Art Student League of New York. It was there that he followed in his father's footsteps and began taking classes from Chase, and even attended Chase's summer art school at Shinnecock, New York. These formative influences helped Onderdonk refine his work and further develop his own brand of American Impressionism, inspired by the beauty and grandeur of Texas. Although Onderdonk is often categorized as a "Texas artist," this definition is far too narrow. Like other Impressionists, Onderdonk was fascinated by the atmospheric conditions found during different seasons, weather conditions, and times of day. He was particularly fond of early morning in the Texas Hill Country. In such paintings, he combines Impressionism and Tonalism with his own special brand of Realism in order to immortalize the land he loved so much by invoking a strong emotional response from the viewer. His sister and fellow artist, Eleanor once wrote, "It is impossible to look at any of Julian's paintings and not see the man who looked at nature with wide-open eyes, analyzed, studied and then created." The artist's own passion for the land of Texas cannot be doubted. He once wrote: "San Antonio offers an inexhaustible field for the artist. Nowhere else are the atmospheric effects more varied and more beautiful. One never tires of watching them. Nowhere else is there such a wealth of color. In the spring, when the wild flowers are in bloom, it is riotous: every tint, every hue, every shade is present in the most lavish profusion, and even in the dead of summer, when one would imagine that any canvas could only convey the impression of intense heat, the possibilities of the landscape are still beyond comprehension. One has only to see it properly to find that everything glows with a wonderful golden tint which is the delight and the despair of all who have ever tried to paint it." After his death, Onderdonk's bluebonnet paintings inspired the Texas Wildflower exhibitions in San Antonio from 1927 to 1929. This ultimately gave rise to the ubiquitous "Bluebonnet School," which is still prevalent and widely collected in Texas today. This work will be included in Harry A. Halff's addendum to Julian Onderdonk: A Catalogue Raisonné. HID01801242017
