          Jul. 29, 2023

1969 Chief Zacheus Oowonubi Oloruntoba Painting

          Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Featured in this lot is a large untitled painting on canvas done by Chief Zacheus Oowonubi Oloruntoba in 1969 in Ibadan, Nigeria. Inheritant to the throne of Ogidi, Nigeria, Zacheus O. Oloruntoba was a Yoruba chieftain. He is also a recognized clairvoyant, a practicing tribal shaman, and a consultant in herbal medicine at Georgetown University. Since late childhood, Chief Oloruntoba had experienced lucid, seemingly clairvoyant dreams that have made him famous around the world. In his teenage years, he started painting as a way to process and record these dreams. His works are intentionally therapeutic and form an essential part of his work as a healer. Queen Elizabeth II, David Rockefeller, Mohammed Ali, and Ornette Coleman all own pieces of his art, with some being exhibited by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The painting is done on canvas and shows a traditional, tribal style of human and animal effigys. The painting shows amazing detail throughout. In the bottom right hand corner is the artist's signature reading, "Z K Oloruntoba NW 3/1146 Abebi Ibadan". The piece shows good condition overall with some wear to the canvas and the black wood frame showing scuffs and scratches throughout. The piece measures 66" L x 30 5/16" W.*
