          Apr. 04, 2024

          KERMIT OLIVER (1943 - ) Hay Rolls.

          Est: $100,000 - $150,000

KERMIT OLIVER (1943 - ) Hay Rolls. Acrylic on plywood board, 1983. 1219x1219 mm; 48x48 inches. Signed in acrylic, lower right recto. Signed, titled, dated and inscribed "B Weaver Commission" and "48 x 48" in pencil, upper left verso. Provenance: commissioned from the artist; Bruce D. Weaver, Houston (1983); thence by descent, private collection, Connecticut (2021). With a DuBose Gallery, Houston label on the frame back - inscribed "Weaver". A native Texan, Bruce Weaver (1922 - 2021) developed a national business manufacturing and installing stainless steel commercial kitchen equipment, serving many of the leading names in the fast food and hospitality industries. Weaver was also a successful restauranteur, hotel operator, and builder of townhouses and custom homes. In addition, he was a passionate rancher, owning two Texas properties where he raised cattle, elk and exotic game. This beautiful painting by Kermit Oliver is a significant mid-career painting by this important Texan artist. Through close observation and great draftsmanship, Oliver created his own form of rugged realism inspired by the Texan landscape and the workers and livestock found on its ranches. With its balanced composition and attention to light and detail, Hay Rolls epitomizes his oeuvre. From a young age, growing up in Refugio, Texas, Kermit Oliver had a passion for depicting his rural surroundings through painting and drawing. Oliver's father was an African-American cowboy who worked on a cattle ranches. He attended Texas Southern University in 1960 where his professor John Biggers inspired him to stay "true to your own message, your own language." After graduating from TSU, Oliver rose to prominence as an artist in Houston in the 1970s. When the DuBose Gallery began representing Oliver in 1971, he was the first African American artist in Houston to be represented by an art gallery. Oliver and his family moved to Waco in 1984 where, despite the fame from his many Hermès scarf commissions, he retreated from the art world. In 2005, he was honored with a retrospective exhibition of his work at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX. His work is included in several museum collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas Southern University, Houston, the Laguna Gloria Art Museum, Austin, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Washington, DC.

          KERMIT OLIVER (1943 - ) Burnt Church.

          Est: $7,000 - $10,000

KERMIT OLIVER (1943 - ) Burnt Church. Lacquer and Japanese oil glaze on wood panel, circa 1965. 229x356 mm; 9x14 inches. Signed in oil, lower right. Provenance: private collection, Texas. This haunting nocturne, depicting the silhouette of a burned out church under moonlight, is a fascinating, early painting by Kermit Oliver. The powerful subject matter is an unusual direct response by the Texan artist to the unrest of the mid-1960s, and a condemnation of the violent campaigns of terror, including the bombing of Black churches, during the Civil Rights period. Oliver continued to paint nocturnal subjects in the 1970s. This painting is also one of the earliest works of Oliver to come to auction. From a young age, growing up in Refugio, Texas, Kermit Oliver had a passion for depicting his rural surroundings through painting and drawing. Oliver's father was an African American cowboy who worked on cattle ranches. He attended Texas Southern University in 1960, where his professor John Biggers inspired him to stay "true to your own message, your own language." • KERMIT OLIVER (AMERICAN, B. 1943) UNTITLED (BEACH MENAGERIE)
          Jun. 07, 2022

KERMIT OLIVER (AMERICAN, B. 1943) UNTITLED (BEACH MENAGERIE)

          Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Kermit Oliver (American, B. 1943) Untitled (Beach Menagerie) Inscribed with artist's name on matboard, watercolor on laid paper 19 5/8 x 24 1/2 in. (49.8 x 62.2cm) Provenance Hooks-Epstein Galleries, Inc., Houston, Texas. DuBose Gallery, Houston, Texas. Private Collection, Montana. Note Kermit Oliver is most well-known for his work with the legendary Parisian fashion house Hermés. In 1980, he was commissioned by the fashion giant to create an original scarf design inspired by the American Southwest. The scarf was a resounding success, prompting Oliver to create an additional 16 scarf designs. To date, he remains the only American artist to have designed scarves for Hermés. The son of a Texas cowboy, Kermit Oliver spent his childhood riding horses and learning to tend to various farmyard animals. These early childhood experiences combined with his interest in mythology and religion inform the subject matter of his paintings. Described as “strange, lushly illustrated worlds populated by people and animals realistically drawn but placed in surreal juxtaposition" by the Joe Holley of the Houston Chronicle, we see a prime example of his style in Untitled (Beach Menagerie). A child wrapped in a towel stands by the sea surrounded by ducks, a goat, and a cow. The inclusion of farmyard animals along the seashore evoke childhood innocence and imagination at play. In overall very good condition. The sheet is completely laid to the matboard so the reverse could not be examined. The edges of the sheet are also obscured by the mat. There is a pinprick of surface soiling at top right above the boy's head. There are occasional tiny black dots across the composition, but these appear to be inherent rather than surface soiling. No evidence of restoration under UV light. Frame: 24 3/4 x 29 3/4 x 1 1/2 in.

        • Pani La Shar Pawnee Vintage Hermès Silk Scarf, Kermit Oliver
          Oct. 26, 2019

Pani La Shar Pawnee Vintage Hermès Silk Scarf, Kermit Oliver

          Est: $2,000 - $3,100

Presented is an original "Pani La Shar Pawnee" Hermes silk scarf by American artist Kermit Oliver. The title "Pani La Shar Pawnee" is labeled at the top in gray lettering. The scarf features the sought-after design featuring Pawnee Indian Chief Pani La Shar. The design was first issued in 1984 by Kermit Oliver at the beginning of his career as a designer for Hermes and depicts a Pawnee Indian chief. The chief is rendered in a very detailed and realistic style, as was common for Oliver, as he focused his paintings on realism. The scarf was produced in a variety of colors, but this vibrant orange rendition provides stark contrast between the figure and background embellishment. As his first design for Hermes, "Pani La Shar Pawnee" highlights the southwestern style Oliver was well known for. The composition features the Indian chief, center, with traditional attire. The chief is set against a bold orange background color, with a border of various horses and native headdresses. Kermit Oliver (born 1943) is an American painter who studied and worked in Texas, USA. Oliver primarily worked in painting, but is also celebrated for his work as a designer for Hermes. The relationship began in 1980, when owner Lawrence Marcus of Neiman Marcus introduced Oliver to the Hermes company. Oliver produced 17 custom designs for Hermes over 32 years, and is the only American artist to ever design for Hermes.

Les Ameriques Vintage Hermès Silk Scarf, Kermit Oliver

          Est: $2,000 - $3,000

This is a vintage Hermes scarf entitled "Les Ameriques" by American designer Kermit Oliver. The scarf was first issued in 1992 to commemorate the 500 year anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s voyage to the United States. This commemorative scarf embodies the monumental voyage of 1492, with Columbus featured prominently. The scarf also features a Native American adjacent to Columbus in traditional attire. Surrounding them are various exotic animals, native drawings and designs, traditional European sculptures, and decorative foods and symbols. The design features traditional European elements including art, crests, cherubs, and animals at right aside Columbus, while native elements such as wild animals, Native American drawings, and primitive art are depicted at left aside the Native American figure. Columbus stands above his three ships that were used in his voyage, the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. An early European map is depicted in the top quarter of the composition featuring discovered lands. An embodiment of the voyage and America during the 15th century, this scarf is one of Oliver's most elaborate designs. At bottom, the title "Les Ameriques" is featured prominently. The copyright mark "Hermes Paris" is printed in gold lettering slightly left of the title. The colorway is exceedingly vibrant, featuring cool blue tones, bright green, light pink, and pale yellow. Kermit Oliver (born 1943) is an American painter who studied and worked as both an artist and a postman in Texas, USA.
