John O'Leary (1929-1999) Concarneau - Brittany 1958 Oil on canvas, 46 x 33cm (17 x 12.5") Signed, inscribed and dated 1958 verso Exhibited: "John O'Leary Retrospective" April/ May The Crawford Municipal Art Gallery April/ May 2002 Cat no:36 Literature: "John O'Leary Retrospective Catalogue Pg 32/3, which accompanies this lot. "A painting from this time, Concarneau Brittany 1958, shows the degree to which O'Leary retained his admiration for Gauguin and van Gogh. The painting depicts a landscape in which a figure, dressed in traditional Breton costume, stands below three trees. The tree trunks form vertical elements in the composition, while horizontal elements are derived from semi-abstract representations of the undulating landscape, with red roofs and fields and houses beyond trees."
